France's Influence on Its Former Colonies: A Case Study of Morocco and Algeria
Celerová, Adéla ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
This diploma thesis examines the topic of France's influence on its former colonies. Using the example of Algeria and Morocco, analyzes what influence France has on its former colonies at the present time, whether the influence persists, and whether this relationship can be characterized as a form of neocolonialism. Using the analysis of the relationship of the two selected countries with France, and the subsequent analysis of cooperation in four selected areas, the work examines and compares whether the possible influence of the former colonizer on the selected countries is the same, or whether it is different (eventually what are the reasons for the asymmetry of the ongoing relations in favor of one of the countries). The work is based on the theories of realism, which considers power to be the core of international relations, and in this case it is not hard power, but rather soft power. Other main important theories are colonialism and neocolonialism, as the countries were long time under French colonial rule, as well as orientalism or dependency theory, which also deals with the topic of influence. Based on the analysis of relations in the fields of foreign policy, economic cooperation and security cooperation, the influence of France on the two former colonies is compared in the theoretical...
The Role of the Civil Society in the Transformation of the North African States
Jiránková, Adéla ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
The rigorous thesis focuses on the role of the Civil Society in the processes of transition to democracy as a part of the possible democratization wave in the Middle East also know as the Arab Spring. For the purposes of the thesis the author examines three case studies of countries with the successful revolutions - Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia and two countries, where the revolutions were not successful - Morocco and Algeria. Using the method of process-tracing with focus on the path-dependency it traces the changes in the dynamics of the Civil Society in the pre-revolutionary period, concretely during Mubarak's regime in Tunisia, Qaddafi's rule in Libya, Ben Ali's regime in Tunisia, reign of the king Muhammad VI. in Morocco, and Bouteflika's regime in Algeria through the revolutions to the post-revolutionary period. Moreover, the main assumption is that the initial non-democratic regimes have been significantly influencing the transformation process of all three countries and this also applies to the Civil Society as such. The Civil Society, in this thesis, is based on two paradigms. The first is based on the liberal modernization framework and the second is connected with stagnation and socio-economic deprivation. This unique combination contributed to the transformation of Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco,...

Dolejší, Daniel ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
Daniel Dolejší The causes of continuing existence of the French Foreign Legion 2015 Abstract The core theme of this diploma thesis is the French Foreign Legion that is examined from the point of view of national interests and strategic culture of France. It is very unusual in developed countries to have foreigners as a part of national army. Goal of the thesis is to discover and describe the causes of continuing existence of the French Foreign Legion. First of all, the author defines national interests and strategic culture of France for certain periods, and then he assesses the contribution of the Legion to fulfillment of goals connected to the national interests and the strategic culture. To the main conclusions of this work belongs that the first hypothesis was confirmed, the French Foreign Legion helped to reach goals based on national interests in certain periods. On the other hand, the second hypothesis was not completely confirmed. The author expected that the strategic culture always stabilizes and supports the role of the Legion, but he found out the opposite for the interwar period. The author supposes higher importance of the Legion in the area of peacekeeping operations under a mandate of the UN or NATO because the EU currently lacks troops prepared to be deployed abroad.

Modernization reforms in colonial Algeria: 1945-1962
Mlčoch, Kryštof ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
Concerning the French colonial presence in Algeria after the Second World War, we can observe an increased effort of high representatives of both metropolitan France and French Algeria to realize a quick modernization of this territory. Those reforms took place in order to keep the territory under the French colonial scope by changing it into one of the French departments with a developed economy and well integrated inhabitants. At the time of the Independence War these efforts seem like an alternative, non-military approach how to realize it. The subject of this case study is to analyse the French colonial modernization in practice on the case of Algeria between the Second World War and its independence. Its goal is to present the system of modernization process the to readers. It examines especially the economic modernization as this domain demonstrates many examples of modernization as agricultural population reduction, efficiency of work, fast GDP growth, education, industrialization and efficient use of natural resources. This progress was based on huge four-year modernization plans. These reforms show many signs of modernization, but if their true goal was to keep Algeria French, they can not be considered as successful.
