Sociological analysis of discursive representations of happiness
Šrám, Kristián ; Hájek, Martin (advisor) ; Balon, Jan (referee)
The master thesis seeks to analyze discursive representations of happiness present in the Czech Republic. Analytical conceptualization of happiness is based upon the two prominent views on happiness - hedonism and eudaimonism. Hedonic perspective situates the issue of achieving happiness into the context of pleasure seeking activities while eudaimonic perspective relates happiness to concepts such as self-actualization, fulfilment of one's potential, and similar topics broadly connected to personal growth and search for meaning. Concepts of hedonism and eudaimonism help to reduce the abstract nature of happiness. The thesis identifies three types of discursive representations of happiness - neoliberal, spiritual / religious, and pop-psychological representations. Particular representations define happiness differently. However, there are similarities and interdependencies in the aspects of how the hedonism and eudaimonism are being used. Thus, there are interactions between particular representations. Eudaimonism is more dominant in every representation in the sense of general claim that true (longlasting) happiness is never taken-for-granted, and that it must be cultivated. Representations that lean heavily towards eudaimonism were also associated with stronger normative dimension that might serve to...
Interventions increasing happiness and life satisfaction
Kukulová, Petra ; Vranka, Marek (advisor) ; Komárek, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis deals with the intervention strategies of positive psychology and how they affect our happiness and life satisfaction. The literary overview of the work defines the concept of happiness and mention the factors contributing towards its level. There are also evidence appropriate to question whether it is even possible to achieve long lasting positive change in the level of happiness. Another part deals already on intervention strategies. I've focused on mapping the working mechanism of these interventions. I mention factors that contribute to their effectiveness. At the end of the theoretical work I mention the critical reflection on researches to verify the effectiveness of intervention strategies and introduce most common pitfalls, typical for this type of studies. Draft of my research project is aimed at verifying the effectiveness of intervention strategy, "Three Good Things."
The Relationship of Hedonism and Humanism
Jerman, Ondřej ; Jirsa, Jakub (advisor) ; Švec, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis discusses the relationship between humanism and hedonism. However, its main objective is not to explain the terms in their summarized historical relatedness but to point out their internal coherence. The fundamental issue the thesis deals with is the fact that sentient beings suffer from sorrow. Enumerating the reasons why it is important to search for a solution would be a waste of our reader's time. It is necessary to understand that we don't expect empirical science to solve the problem since - despite the enthusiasm significant for this modern period - has not introduced any relief from sorrow. Here comes the opportunity for philosophy and, eventually, ethics. In its first part the thesis maps out the context of humanism and hedonism, studies their apparent as well as hidden nature, and lays the conceivable foundations of humanistic hedonism. The following section suggests a set of particular steps. Adhering to these instructions makes it possible to experience delight and to eliminate sorrow.
Annotated Czech Translation of Selected Chapters from "Health Matters"; Neil Moffatt; London: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2011
Pavelka, Tomáš ; Mraček, David (advisor) ; Špirk, Jaroslav (referee)
This bachelor's thesis consists of two parts: translation and annotation. It aims to prove the student's ability to translate a text, and to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during study to a specific communication situation. The annotation contains an analysis of the elements relevant for translation, resulting in a list of potential translation problems, which are typologized. The problems identified in the original text along with the shifts encountered in its translation are then, too, typologized. Examples of the different types of shifts are supplied from the translation of the aforementioned text carried out by the student. Keywords annotated chapters; health; happiness; habit
Does work in non-profit sector pay off?
Kopeček, Martin ; Chytilová, Julie (advisor) ; Pěkná, Martina (referee)
This thesis examines the relation between working in a non-profit sector and subjective perception of happiness. The first part is dedicated to introduction and historical context of happiness. The second part examines various literature dedicated to this phenomenon. In the last part statistical regressions are estimated to prove or reject the correlation using data from US National Longitudinal Survey of Youths 1997. Most of the models render the relation as insignificant, from one model we get that people from low- income families tend to be happy all of the time less often when working in a non-profit organization. Determinants of life satisfaction in Czechia with the focus on geographical factors
Procházka, Petr ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Andráško, Ivan (referee)
The objective of this thesis is to analyse determinants of subjective well-being in Czechia and to compare them with other empirical evidence from Czechia and abroad. Main theoretical approaches include those emphasising "psychological" factors and those emphasising factors outside of the human personality. Data from the Public Opinion Research Centre of more than 2,000 respondents from Czechia of years 2013 and 2014 were analysed statistically. Measures of so-called global and local subjective well-being were dependent variables. Independent variables include "geographical" and demographic variables and other dummies. It was confirmed that people living in more populated buildings, with a lower space mobility, older, of a lower employment status or unemployed, lower education and left-wing oriented declare usually a lower results on the subjective well-being, too. Gender and income had variable effect on the subjective well-being. Theoretical assumptions were not confirmed considering the settlement size, mode of commuting and religion.

The analysis is interested in the study of Czech documents relevant to this topic as well (The Czech Republic's Strategic Framework for Sustainable Development and Progress report). The aim of this particular study is to identify the expressed explicit and also implicit signs of the subjective wellbeing. Erös, Roman ; Čechura, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Zdichynec, Jan (referee)
Synopsis The aim of this Bachelor thesis is not rendered and reveal the alchymist procedures, but rather to know the thinking of the alchemists and their destinies, because not all of them were con artists who would like to share the fraudulent ways and so enrich at the expense of its surroundings. A few of them not only made money, but even borrowed, and eventually ended up in prison. Most of them really believe in their dreams of actinide transmutation and extending the life and the other on the contrary, have ceased to believe in the miracle of riches by using the transmutation and rather started to think about whether something like that is possible and then go back to the top. And it was actually the beginning of the inquiry and that of the beginning of a new scientific discipline and chemistry. Of course, that together with the effort of the alchemists of actinide transmutation of metals, and search for the stone is associated and the destinies of famous players of this science and it, from the founder of the Herma Trismegistose to the present, because the dream of the alchemists is not foreign or today's man.
