The position of companies within global production networks and the role of regional innovation systems: the case of the Czech power-engineering
Lypianin, Anton ; Blažek, Jiří (advisor) ; Vanžura, Jan (referee)
This thesis examines the position of the Czech power-engineering industry in the global market. The first aim of this thesis is to analyze the level of involvement of the Czech power-engineering firms into the GPN. The second goal is to discover to what extent the position of these firms depends on the quality of the regional innovation systems. It employs two relatively new concepts of the global production networks (GPN) and regional innovation systems (RIS) in order to reach its two main goals. The vast majority of the exemined power-engineering companies connected with global production networks and 12 of them are are identified as lead firms in GPN. Relatively very good positions of the Czech power-engineering firms in GPN caused by the industrial traditions of the Czech firms, the quality of the supporting industries and the presence of the global power- engineering TNCs in Czechia. Most of the companies supply equipment to others branches simultaneously with the power-engineering. The companies carrying out their own R&D&I activities bring the highest value to the industry. The results proved the assumption that the firms embedded in relatively more developed RISs usually enjoy higher positions in GPNs Key words: global production networks, regional innovation systems, Czechia
The effect of migration on electoral geography of populist-nationalist parties: the case of Freedom and Direct Democracy - Tomio Okamura party
Suchánek, Jonáš ; Hasman, Jiří (advisor) ; Maškarinec, Pavel (referee)
Analytical research of a migrant's presence in a certain location on election outcomes of populist-nationalist parties is a relatively new phenomena in the field of electoral geography. Media and political interest in migration and refugees has risen rapidly in the last few years and offers a broad opportunity for relevant scientific studies. This thesis stems from existing literature, that have studied such relation and focuses on the case of The Freedom and Direct Democracy - Tomio Okamura Party (SPD) and on the possible influence of the share of migrants on SPD's electoral support at two different scale levels (municipalities with authorized municipal offices and individual municipalities) during the 2017 parliamentary elections. Analysing the most important groups of migrants and additionally a formed group of migrants coming from countries with either dominant or significant Muslim native population can be considered as innovative. The main goal is to discover whether the election outcomes of SPD, which stands strongly opposed to migration, differ based on the share of migrants in a certain area, or if migration does not play any role at all. Furthermore, the electoral geography of SPD is compared to the of Tomio Okamura's former party - Dawn of Direct Democracy, whose rhetoric did not focus...
Analysis of contractual research according to knowledge bases in Czech regional innovation systems
Štěpán, Marek ; Blažek, Jiří (advisor) ; Srholec, Martin (referee)
This work is focused on the analysis of contractual research in Czechia. The aim of the thesis is to clarify the role and nature of contractual research in the Czech regions. The theoretical framework is grounded in the theory of regional innovation systems and in the concept of knowledge bases. Particular attention is paid to the specific type of cooperation between the research institutions and firms. Through data analysis and network charts, regions are compared based on different characteristics. It turns out that the role and nature of contractual research across regions varies profoundly. Differences are found in the size and number of actors involved in contractual research. The embeddedness of companies in the transfer of knowledge, the openness of regional innovation systems and the field of specialisation are also studied. Using localization quotients, the intensity of representation of knowledge bases in the NUTS 3 regions is measured. Some regions are strongly oriented towards one of the bases, while in other regions the specialization is not pronounced. Finally, network analyses performed according to differentiated knowledge bases, identify the key actors in contractual research.
Application of Multilevel Models in Geography: Example of Unemployment
Kadlecová, Adéla ; Netrdová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Komárek, Marek (referee)
Application of Multilevel Modeling in Geography: Example of Unemployement Abstract Multilevel models are an effective methodological tool for analyzing hierarchically structured data. It is a quantitative method based on regression analysis whose use in geography is currently not so widespread. In view of this fact this work is aimed especially at a detailed introduction of the statistical method of multilevel modeling, including both an introduction to all its possibilities and limitations, as well as an example of application of this method in the specific geographic research from the area of unemployment. The purpose of this analysis is to identify particular individual and regional variables related to unemployment and to uncover the effect of these variables on unemployment. Keywords: multilevel modeling, quantitative methods, unemployment, Czechia
Evaluation of methods and input data for land cover classification: case study of the former military areas Ralsko and Brdy
Paluba, Daniel ; Štych, Přemysl (advisor) ; Brom, Jakub (referee)
Taking advantage of Earth Observation (EO) data for monitoring land cover has attracted the attention of a broad spectrum of researchers and end-users in recent decades. The main reason of increased interest in EO can be found mainly in open data of Landsat and Sentinel archive. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of the classification algorithms Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) using Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 data in the case studies of the former military training areas Brdy and Ralsko, which have undergone a very specific land cover development. The study evaluates the land cover in both case studies in 2016 and based on the obtained results discussing a usefulness of the selected data and methods. The results of the land cover classification achieved satisfactory accuracy - the overall accuracy was higher than 85 %. Based on the expectation, the results of accuracy based on SVM algorithm are higher than results obtained by ML algorithm. The highest accuracy has reached in the land cover classes of water bodies and coniferous forests, on the contrary, the lowest accuracy in built-up areas, sparse vegetation and bare soil. Regional Differences in Healthy Life Expectancy in Czechia
Klicperová, Barbora ; Lustigová, Michala (advisor) ; Otáhalová, Hana (referee)
Regional Differences in Healthy Life Expectancy in Czechia Abstract Over the past decade, the health status of the population has also been measured by Healthy Life Expectancy indicator. This indicator covers not only the quantitative aspect, but it takes into the account also the qualitative aspect of prolonging human life. The main objective of this thesis is to evaluate the differences in healthy life expectancy among the regions of Czechia, both in terms of space and time (2009-2014). The introductory part of the thesis outlines the connections of the origin of the healthy life expectancy indicator and analyses the methods of its construction. The theoretical part of the thesis also includes description of sample surveys. To calculate healthy life years, the Sullivan method is used. Data on health status were obtained from the SILC survey. According to the results of the analysis, there is considerable variability between regions in terms of healthy life expectancy. The difference is significantly higher in terms of healthy life expectancy than in the case of life expectancy. A more detailed analysis of the distribution of the healthy life expectancy values has revealed that there is a certain "paradox" of healthy life expectancy in relation to life expectancy, since there are regions where the high...

The influence of social remittances on the development of Moldova - a case study of Moldovan workers in Czechia
Košař, Miroslav ; Drbohlav, Dušan (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee)
International migration has a major impact on the economy of Moldova and its inhabitants. Nevertheless, it belongs to the poorest countries in Europe and its every third economically active inhabitant of this post-Soviet country is working abroad. These migrants send financial remittances, which consist of a part of their income or material goods to their families from target countries including Czechia. The theoretical background of this thesis is the type of remittances, namely the concept of social remittances, which in contrary to financial remittances draws attention to non-financial transfers - ideas, behaviours, identities and social capital flowing from receiving to source country communities. The concept was based on observation of development potential and impacts within the migration-development nexus paradigm. The basic qualitative research in this work examines the concept of social remittances within example of research Moldovan migrants working in Czechia with semi-structured deep interviews. Acquired authentic responses of the informants were processed by inductive analysis of qualitative data. The results have shown the existence of the potential for receiving social remittances by migrants and their transfer to Moldova due to ongoing circular migration. However, neither potential...
Vietnamese Retail as Part of the Non-metropolitan Area in Czechia
Horáček, Jiří ; Čermák, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Freidingerová, Tereza (referee)
Vietnamese food stores are located all over the Czechia and are often the only option for food purchases in non-metropolitan areas. This dissertation is focused on the study of Vietnamese retail in the context of the problems of serviceability of small towns and rural settlements in the Czechia. One of the main goals of this dissertation is to verify whether Vietnamese businesses are one of the ways to save the ever-falling rural service functions. Considering that the issue of rural service provision is an extensive topic, the work only yields partial results that will need to be verified in further studies. The introductory sections analyze the processes of Vietnamese migration into our country and subsequently characterize the development of retail. The next part focuses on the operation of Vietnamese retail where structured interviews conducted within the research serve as a main source of information. The quantitative part of the research focuses on the issue of the distribution of shops, and, in the empirical part, using questionnaire the functioning of the Zásmuky retail trade with a focus on Vietnamese food stores is assessed. The analysis shows that Vietnamese food stores are one of the solutions to maintaining business in rural communities. Due to the efficiency of their operation, which...
