Categorization of Eurosceptic political parties in Slovakia and the Czech Republic
Barilova, Emma Lujza ; Lenčéš Chalániová, Daniela (advisor) ; Martinková, Viera (referee)
This thesis explored party-based Euroscepticism in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Euroscepticism is a growing phenomenon, and more importantly, it is moving from the periphery into mainstream political life. Twenty years anniversary of the Czech Republic and Slovakia entering the European Union is coming up next year, and it seems that two decades in the Union left a negative imprint on the population that was once excited about entering a new era. Seeing as the majority of research and categorization of Eurosceptic political movements in Slovakia and the Czech Republic was conducted around the accession period (2004), we decided to compare current Eurosceptic political parties in Slovakia and the Czech Republic in terms of the magnitude (soft/hard Euroscepticism) of and motivations for their scepticism (ideologically vs. strategically driven) and position them within the Eurosceptic space (as defined by Jan Rovny in 2004). We categorized eight Eurosceptic political parties which gained seats in at least one of the two last legislative elections, four Slovak parties (elections in 2016 and 2020) and four Czech Eurosceptic parties (elections in 2017 and 2021). We analyzed their electoral manifestos and consulted secondary sources to categorize them as follows. Four parties can be categorized as...
Geographical aspects of the process of deinstitutionalization of the Sudetenland border
Korčák, Matěj ; Netrdová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Šimon, Martin (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to evaluate the impact of the former Sudeten German border as a primary factor on the socio-spatial differentiation of Czechia in time and space. The issue is viewed chronologically through the lens of the deinstitutionalization process. The main criterion evaluated within this process is the border's persistent effect on regional differences in its surroundings. The choice of indicators for which the degree of deinstitutionalisation is examined assumes that the expulsion of Czech Germans from the borderlands and the subsequent resettlement of the affected areas have transformed the population structures in the long term. At the local level, a quantitative analysis of selected indicators representing the three elementary population structures - demographic, social and economic - is conducted. The average values of the indicators are compared within the defined border zones in terms of substantive relevance. Data from the censuses between 1980 and 2021 are used, which allows us to track the changes in the influence of the historical boundary over time. A particular emphasis is placed on the spatial heterogeneity of the degree of deinstitutionalization of the Sudetenland border, which is thus analysed not only as a whole entity, but also in terms of its variability...
Comparison of lightning detection networks over Czechia
Pacovská, Lucie ; Popová, Jana (advisor) ; Müller, Miloslav (referee)
This thesis focuses on ground-based lightning detection which is important since lightning discharges still cause casualties yearly worldwide. The thesis provides description of several ground-based lightning detection networks and an analysis of lightning data of three lightning detection networks covering the Czech Republic during 2015 - 2021. Specifically, the data of the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN), the amateur network Blitzortung and the European network EUropean Cooperation for LIghtning Detection (EUCLID) are investigated. The thesis examines the spatial and temporal characteristics of lightning discharges from the three detection networks, the relationship between lightning discharges and land cover from CORINE Land Cover data, and the relationship of lightning discharges with types of weather situations based on the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) data. The results show that there is not much difference in the temporal and spatial characteristics of lightning discharges among the three detection networks. The relationship between lightning activity and land cover is the same for the three networks. Unlike the relationship between lightning activity and land cover, the relationship between lightning activity and weather types is in good agreement among the...
Attitudes of the Czech public towards migration and international migrants
Šimková, Tereza ; Drbohlav, Dušan (advisor) ; Marešová, Jarmila (referee)
This diploma thesis aims to analyze the attitudes of Czech society towards migration and international migrants in the context of the migration crisis between 2014, 2015 and 2017. The basic theoretical premises are mainly based on the theory of group threats, the theory of social identity, the contact hypothesis and socio-demographic characteristics. Using the analysis of the preferences of the Czech public towards individual immigration groups, the work will reveal changes in respondents' likes and dislikes. The conclusion will focus on the behavior of the respondents in the crisis and analyze which groups of respondents have changed their sympathies and antipathies towards individual migration groups and evaluate the conditional factors that influenced the attitudes of the respondents. The thesis draws on data from nationwide research of the Center for Public Opinion Research of the Institute of Sociology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, v.v.i. commissioned by the Department of Social Geography and Regional Development of Charles University in 2014, 2015 and 2017. Key words International migration, public attitudes, migration crisis, sympathy and antipathy, cultural toleration, Czechia.

Czechia as a target country for cross-border reproductive care
Volejníková, Adéla ; Šťastná, Anna (advisor) ; Fait, Tomáš (referee)
Czechia as a target country for cross-border reproductive care Abstract Since the 1970s, economically developed countries have been experiencing a change in the reproductive behavior of their populations, with one of the main trends being the postponement of fertility to a later age. However, this trend is associated with an increasing risk of infertility, as the chances of natural conception decrease as women age. In this context, there is a growing interest in the treatment of infertility through Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), which are regulated and governed by legal regulations in many countries. As a result, there is an increase in the provision of cross-border reproductive care, where infertile couples, primarily for legislative reasons, undergo assisted reproduction abroad. Since this is a relatively new and unexplored phenomenon, the aim of this study is to map the main trends in the provision of cross- border reproductive care, focusing on the perspective of Czechia as a destination country. Individual anonymized data on all initiated cycles of assisted reproduction in Czechia from 2016 to 2019 are used. It has been shown that assisted reproduction trends in Czechia are significantly influenced by the provision of cross-border reproductive care, as reproductive tourists accounted for...
Czechia between 'the East' and 'the West': Critical geopolitics of international relations and economic flows
Fiřtíková, Eva ; Lepič, Martin (advisor) ; Jelen, Libor (referee)
In this thesis, I deal with the context of international relations and economic flows of the Czechia towards the USA and China in the period 2002-2022. Using individual indicators in the field of trade, direct foreign investment, and in research and development, I examine the dependence of economic flows on foreign connections. Foreign bilateral meetings play a significant role in the subsequent reaction of the state's economy. I examine how foreign connections affect different types of economic flows, as well as their development and variability. The course of economic flows is often greatly influenced by events (such as the global financial crisis or Covid-19), which can affect the state in a number of negative consequences. However, thanks to the efforts of government representatives, diplomatic representatives and important businessman, the subsequent development of the political- economic sphere of states can lead to successful growth, using conclusions and agreements from foreign meetings or proven procedures in mutual cooperation.

Impact of socioeconomic and social factors on subjective well-being among Czech population
Tmějová, Kateřina ; Lustigová, Michala (advisor) ; Hanzlová, Radka (referee)
The main concern of this thesis is the impact of selected socioeconomic and social factors on subjective well-being of individuals in the Czech population. This thesis thus explains and describes the concept of well-being and summarizes the factors that can influence it. Using data from survey EU-SILC 2018 of Czechia, the effect of selected socioeconomic and social factors on the level of well-being of an individual is analysed using a multinomial logistic regression method. Both individually and when all selected factors interact. The analysis found that the level of education, the level of income and the quality of housing of an individual significantly affect the level of life satisfaction. The significant effect of an individual's social ties on the level of life satisfaction was found to be the most significant when socioeconomic and social factors impacted on the level of life satisfaction. Another objective was to analyse the relationship between an individual's life satisfaction and self-rated health. This relationship was found to be reciprocal, meaning that the level of life satisfaction of an individual has an impact on his subjective health evaluation and vice versa. The thesis also compares the prevalence of life satisfaction of the Czech population with other populations that also...
Saturation of the Czech territory by precipitation before extreme precipitation totals
Laco, Martin ; Müller, Miloslav (advisor) ; Ledvinka, Ondřej (referee)
The saturation of the river basin is one of the important factors that contribute to the occurrence of significant floods. Examples of floods where significant previous saturation played a significant role are, for example, the floods of 1997, 2002 and 2013. A more detailed description of saturation before heavy rainfall in the Czech Republic was missing. The main goal of the work was therefore to describe the distribution of saturation using a suitable index of saturation before cases of heavy precipitation in the Czech Republic, and also to try to describe the degree of risk associated with high saturation in combination with heavy precipitation, using the proposed indicator of the importance of relative saturation. Based on the results of the work, we can say that, in general, the saturation before heavy precipitation totals can be diverse (mainly for the shortest analyzed time intervals), but on average it is rather normal. It is slightly increased in the mountain area, especially in the east of the country and for strong precipitation totals of the longest analyzed time intervals. However, when taking into account the extremity of heavy precipitation totals, it turns out that the saturation tends to be significantly increased mainly for the heaviest precipitation of longer time intervals in...
