Mythological Themes in the Work of Joseph Heintz the Elder. This Bachelor's Thesis is primarily focused on the analysis of nine mythological paintings made by Joseph Heintz the Elder, one of the most prominent court painters to the Emperor Rudolf II. Whilst the introduction describes the cultural scene and the economic situation of the 2nd part of the 16th century, the main focus of attention is on the art in the Emperor's Court, followed by the painter's biography: in its framework his development as an artist as well as his works in the field of architecture are observed. The main topic of this thesis is the analysis of singular works. The emphasis is put on the literary works on which the paintings are based on: Ovid's Metamorphoses and Apuleius novel The Golden Asse. Firstly the is described, followed by an overview of the basic information (origin and dates) and a formal analysis highlighting the differences between the visual adaptation and the literary input. Finally, attention focuses on the alegorical sense of the myths which is often not clear at first sight. In order to explain this, the commentary of the Italian version of Ovid's Metamorphoses written by Giuseppe Orologgi was used.

Jiráková, Hana ; Zlatohlávek, Martin (advisor) ; Konečný, Lubomír (referee)
(in English) The key theme of my thesis are venetian influences on the Boccaccio Boccaccino's work, who was one of the most important exponents of the Cremonese school of painters. Initially he worked in Genoa, Cremona and Milan and he was influenced by the painters as Leonardo, Bramantino and Boltraffio. In the years 1497-1500 Boccaccino is documented in Ferrara. In this period he executed so-called tondo Gronau, The Christ on the way to Calvary, The Virgin and Child, now in Boston, The Virgin and Child, now in Padua, The Adoration of the Shepherds, now in Naples and Dead Christ supported by an Angel. This works show the influence of Bramantino, umbrian school but also early influence of venetian art. In 1500 or 1501 he painted the altarpiece with Virgin and Child with Sts Peter, Michael, John the Baptist and John the Evangelist for the church of S. Giuliano in Venice. Models of this composition are the S. Cassiano altarpiece of Antonello da Messina and Virgin and Child with Saints which Giovanni Bellini executed for the church of S. Giobbe. Boccaccino's image in S.Giuliano is also inspired by Ercole de'Roberti and Lorenzo Costa. His colours show the influence of Giorgione. In 1506 is Boccaccino documented in Venice but also in Cremona. In the years 1500-1506 he stayed probably in Venice, but he...

The Prague painting Saint Luke painting the Virgin by Jan Gossaert called Mabuse
Hamrlová, Anna ; Zlatohlávek, Martin (advisor) ; Jarošová, Markéta (referee)
The National Gallery in Prague conserves an important masterpiece of the Fle- mish mannerist Jan Gossaert. The panel painting Saint Luke painting the Virgin was originally determined for the cathedral of Saint Roumboult in Mechelen in Belgium. The artwork represents one of the first applications of Renaissance style behind the Alps. Gossaert was educated in this new style during a visit to Italy several years earlier and combined it with traditional Flemish art. The artist worked for the court of Margaret of Austria in Mechelen around the year 1513, the year the painting originates. His traditional style became influenced by the techniques used in Mechelen by foreign artists. The theme is painted the tradi- tional manner of work on an oak panel. Renaissance and Gothic architecture is decorated by " en grisaille" sculptures. A seemingly simple theme is given deeper meaning thanks to these objects containing hidden meanings. There are also some prints from the time the panel was in the Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague due to which we can contemplate the progress in presentation of the painting during centuries. 1
