Franěk, Robert ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Váška, Jan (referee)
Reform of the United Nations Security Council has already become an evergreen of international politics. There are many reform proposals, but it's impossible to find satisfactory solution. One of the main candidates for new permanent membership is Germany, which published its bid in 1992. During 90's also emerged first proposals mentioning the possibility of future permanent membership of the European Union. This thesis contributes to debate on Europeanisation of foreign policies of EU member states. The aim is to find out, whether has German bid for permanent membership in the UN Security Council been influenced by membership of Germany in the European Union. For a better recognition of possible Europeanisation effects is German case compared with Japan, which published its bid only one year later and shares similar characteristics to Germany. Content analysis method is used to compare German and Japanese argumentation with regard to four topics: equitable representation, economic power, multilateral cooperation and responsibility.
Doctors Without Borders as an International Relations Actor: The Cases of Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina Missions
Němcová, Karolína ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of this Master thesis is to identify the specifics of non-governmental organization Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) as an actor of international relations, mainly through the presentation and activities of the organization during the implementation of its programs in the early 1990s, when the process of internationalization was consolidated. The thesis also covers the issue of respecting the commitment to shared values for which Doctors Without Borders claim responsibility, and which also represents the principles of their activities. Based on the theoretical framework of actorness, it is possible to compare three missions of Doctors Without Borders implemented during the internal state conflicts in Somalia, Rwanda and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The analysis shows that during this period, Doctors Without Borders is characterized by a strong national identity of particular sections, in that we can see the strong national features of the French, Belgian and Dutch sections, which often behaved contradictorily and incoherently. The commitment to respect the shared values is fulfilled with one exception, namely the obligation to respect the neutral status.
Partnership in Development - A case study of USAID and Sida
Zemanová, Nikola ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of partnership in development cooperation. In particular, partnerships between development cooperation providers are nowadays being discussed very often, as this type of partnership is playing an increasingly important role in achieving global goals. However, the ambiguity of the concept remains a problem, which is reflected in the uncertainty of translating the theoretical engagements resulting from the partnership into practice. The bachelor thesis examines the issue of partnership between development co-providers at the theoretical level, and contains a case study to provide answers to questions about the importance and possible need to conclude international partnerships. The case study is based on two major development agencies: USAID (International Agency for International Development) and Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) whose Power Africa Partnership established a successful Beyond the Grid Fund for Zambia project exploration. The Power Africa initiative is basically one of the largest public-private partnerships in the history of development cooperation.

Blažek, Ondřej ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)

Foreign Policy Analysis has been chosen as the research method. The method focuses on economic relations between Turkey and the EU and other subjects and searches for potential correlation with foreign policy making process. At first, the thesis researches the historical context of the relations of the EU and Turkey, describes the governing party AKP and analyses the changes in foreign policy. Economic relations are presented by Turkish exports and imports and inward and outward foreign direct investments. At the beginning of its government, the AKP party put a lot of effort to Europeanisation of the country in matter of reforms which brought better legislation and increase of FDI, but also mutual trade with the EU. During the years, fluctuations in mutual relations appeared but these did not have any significant influence on the political relations. As well as deterioration in political relations did not influence mutual trade. The EU is still the most important trade partner of Turkey despite the fluctuations. If a turn away the EU should have come, the motives would come most probably from internal politics...

Karkoš, Daniel ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the Cod wars, a series of disputes between the United Kingdom and Iceland. The disputes were triggered by Iceland's unilateral extention of its territorial waters. It was caused by Iceland's fear of foreign fishermen's negative impact on local economy and culture. The disputes are unique, for the warring parties were partners within NATO. The disputes are nevertheless mostly interesting for the fact that their end was rather unexpected. Every time victory was on Iceland's side. This thesis investigates, what the reasons for such an outcome were. The investigation is done by an analysis of Icelandic national interests, devided into three categories with help of relevant theories of international relations. The outcome of this analysis is an identification of Icelandic advantages.
Evaluation of the success of mission EUBAM and EUFOR
Jílková, Klára ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šír, Jan (referee)
Bachelor thesis deals with evaluation of EU missions, namely EUBAM Moldova-Ukraine and EUFOR Althea. A comparison of two case studies was chosen as a method of work research. The work first deals with the evaluation of each mission and compares the advantages and disadvantages of civilian missions and military operations. These two case studies have been chosen because the countries in which the missions operate, are geographically close, as well as they are neighboring countries of the European Union, which could become potential Member States in the future. Missions are evaluated on the basis of predefined criteria, which were selected on the basis of an analysis of the literature according to the scales compiled by the author. An integral part of the work is a brief introduction to EU Common Foreign and Security Policy, followed by case studies and their evaluation. The last chapter of the thesis is a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the EUBAM Moldova-Ukraine civilian mission and the EUFOR Althea military operation. The bachelor thesis concludes that the strengths and weaknesses of civilian missions and military operations are in many cases quite different.
Reconceptualizing Securitization Theory: A Case Study of the United Kingdom's Securitization of Libya in 2011
Voda, Matěj ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Váška, Jan (referee)
The first aim of this thesis is to describe the steps from the perspective of the United Kingdom, which led to the passing of the resolution 1973 and the subsequent military intervention in Libya in 2011. The theoretical framework is securitization theory. The second aim of this thesis is grounded in the theory and tries to highlight the importance of the concept of audience in the securitization framework. In order to achieve this goal, securitization theory is introduced; its limitations described and subsequently reconceptualized to better suit the research question. The theory is then applied on a case study of the securitizing discourse, preceding the intervention from 15th of February until 21st of March 2011. These events are described from the perspective of the United Kingdom, which together with the general overview corresponds with the hypothesis that the Cameron administration was a securitizing actor towards both national and international audience. Consequently, the analysis shows that the securitizing discourses differed based on the relevant audience. Although human security and democratic aspirations were the main referent objects in both discourses, protection of national security as a referent object was specific only to the national audience. In addition, Gaddafi regime was the...
