Lantern of the Gods: Solar Deity in Ugaritic Literature; including translation of selected texts
Rýdlová, Kateřina ; Vymětalová Hrabáková, Eva (advisor) ; Roubalová, Marie (referee)
Main goal of present thesis is to compose an overall, complete, and coherent view of the solar deity's role in ancient Ugarit by detailed study of Ugaritic texts regarding Sun Goddess Shapsh, particularly focusing on images and expressions used to characterize mentioned deity. Several texts referring to solar deity are chosen for this purpose: fragments from the Baal cycle - the most extensive Ugaritic work preserved, as well as three other tables (KTU 1.100, KTU 1.107, KTU 1.161) are decided on as those are the ones most related to the Sun Goddess Shapsh. An integral part of this study is translation with commentary and detailed grammatical analysis of selected texts. The thorough study of selected texts yields portrayal of Ugaritic solar deity as a, to a certain degree, chthonic deity connecting the world of gods, men and even the dead. Ugaritic Sun Goddess Shapsh wandering through the heavens and the underworld daily, acts in the name of El, the supreme deity, as the omniscient protector of order, symbol of justice and royal might. Non-Baalic texts furnish other aspects of sun goddess in particular: bond with horses (1.100) and her capabilities of treating the wounds of snake bite (1.107).
Biblical and Archaeological Accounts of Hittite Presence in Canaan
Kolenatá, Anna ; Vymětalová Hrabáková, Eva (advisor) ; Beneš, Jiří (referee)
The aim of this Bachelor's thesis is to examine material culture attributed to Hittite provenance which was found in today's Israel and as well as to provide an examination of biblical mentions of the sons of Heti or Hittites in the Old Testament. The Hittites and the Hittite empire have received their name partly from their biblical mentions but it is still a remaining question to which extent the ancient nation of Hittites has migrated to and culturally impacted ancient Canaan. The thesis follows the development of archaeological and historical research focused on modern day Turkey, the birthplace of the Hittite empire and modern day Israel, the promised land of Canaan and is set in contemporary scientific discourse. The main body of this work is aimed at dissecting Hittite-attributed material finds from Israel and at providing an analysis of biblical verses relating the presence of Hittites in the land of Cannaan while attempting to come to a stand alone conclusion. The thesis is also accompanied by various photographs and drawings of published archaeological finds. KEYWORDS Canaan; Hittites; biblical archaeology; material culture; biblical text

It describes the custom of male circumcision in ancient Egypt using pictorial and textual evidence, including findings on mummies. It looks for similarities and differences between male circumcision in ancient Egypt and in Judaism, in which it represents one of the most important rituals, and a sign of belonging to God and the nation. Attention is also given to the significant transformation in Christianity to the new initiation ritual of baptism, and opinions damning circumcision. Biblical themes, including the mystery of Jesus' circumcision and Christ's crucifixion, are reflected in European visual art, which is discussed in the final part of the work. Music, although this term didn't exist in Ancient Egypt, has played a very importatnt role in the common and cultish Egyptian life. They served to numerous deities, male and female, and they belonged to high- ranking families or to families of the high priests. There were several deities directly connected with music. Gods with the closest connections to musicians and deities with musical attributes were for example Hathor (lately unified with Isis), Usir, Bes, Meret, Hathor's son Ihy, Thovt, Bastet or Ptah. Temple musicians made offering and performances to deities about three or four times a day. Ancient musical instruments can be sorted to four groups: idiophones (musical instruments making...
