Methodological innovations in psychological research
Frollová, Nikola ; Vranka, Marek (advisor) ; Fabianová, Ivana (referee)
The year 2012 opened an intense debate about the methodological problems of psychological research that lead to excessive publication of unreliable and nonreplicable results. The proposed improvements consist of conducting more replication studies, sharing data openly, limiting the "degrees of researcher freedom ", and improving the understanding and application of statistical methods for data analysis. This bachelor thesis aims to map the aforementioned problems, proposed solutions, as well as possible criticisms and problems with their implementation in practice. The research proposal consists of measuring the prevalence of questionable scientific practices among psychologists in Czech Republic.
Advertisements against advertising. Subvertising in the Czech Republic and abroad
Dolečková, Veronika ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (advisor) ; Vranka, Marek (referee)
The Bachelor's thesis "Advertisements against Advertising. Subvertising in the Czech Republic and Abroad." deals with the phenomenon of subvertising, which originated from the needs of artists to react to the content and number of advertising messages surrounding us on a daily basis. The thesis sets the phenomenon into cultural-historical context and describes the development of art criticism. It also includes new marketing movements that stem from subvertising. Principally, the thesis focuses on the relationship of art and marketing, whose margins are currently being exceeded. Based on the theoretical findings, the practical part of the thesis analyses selected artists and introduces important manifestations of subvertising. For the description of the artistic interventions, it uses the method of a case study and comparative analysis. At its beginning, the thesis presents four world groups which unify artists and which brought forth subvertising. The next part deals with the context of foreign artistic production and introduces six subvertisers, including several lesser-known figures. The second half of the thesis contains case studies analysing the artistic production in the Czech Republic, and comparative analyses which compare the Czech production with the attacks of foreign artists. The...
Self-control: disentanling inhibition and initiation
Kucharský, Šimon ; Vranka, Marek (advisor) ; Lukavský, Jiří (referee)
Self-control is usually defined as a unit in a regulatory cycle process. As such, it can be used for inhibition of urgent need or overriding impulsive responses, but it can also mean that person can engage in a behavior which is aversive at the moment. Contemporary the most influential is strength model of self-control that envisages one general and limited source of energy for every act of self-control. According to this model, after depleting this energy, one's ability to control his or her behavior or thought is impaired, even in domains that does not relate to the cause of the depletion. However, there has been substantial criticism of this model recently - regarding theoretical implausibility, possible bias in literature (or even manipulated results) and also growing body of evidence that is not in line with the model. Because of that, there are attempts to alter or dismiss the model. One of the possible updates is distinguishing between two domains of self-control (inhibition and initiation). This thesis overviews body of recent findings about self-control and proposes experimental design which could serve to verify hypothesis of existence of two independent domain of self- control. Limits of this approach and suggestions for future research are also discussed. Keywords: Self-control, ego...
The usage of sensory margenting at the point of sale
Jílková, Veronika ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (advisor) ; Vranka, Marek (referee)
The bachelor thesis contemplates sensory marketing at the point of purchase with specific focus on its implementation in practice. The first part looks into the psychology of a customer and tries to find reasons for his purchasing decisions. Because more than 80 % of customers decide on a purchase of a product at the point of purchase, the importance of marketing communication at the point of purchase which can influence the impulsive purchase is immense. Moreover, nowadays customers expects a unique experience connected with emotions from shopping. Therefore, the second part focuses on the sense-oriented marketing which is based on emotions. That suggests that in order to draw positive emotions from a customer it is essential to appeal to his emotions. Based on findings included in the part dedicated to sensory marketing, the thesis concentrates on the examples of effective usage of this type of marketing communication in practice. Using a field research, several stores that offer their customers a exceptional experience from shopping are depicted thoroughly.
Conservatism and liberalism - an outdated concept?
Pour, Marek ; Vranka, Marek (advisor) ; Lukavský, Jiří (referee)
Conservatism and liberalism in american psychological reasearch is mostly described as unidimensional scale which clearly divides ideology into two opposite ideological standpoints. However, current relevant studies show that unidimensional approach to study ideology is overly simplified. Linking ideological orientation and personal traits seem to bring about contradicting results. In a similar way, relevant psychological instruments for measuring conservatism seem to measure two relatively independent aspects of conservatism. It is apparent mostly from large population studies, that ideological orientation is more complex than it may appear. Specific agendas stemming from their respective ideological directions are for a large part of population relatively uncorrelated with their overall ideological self- identification. Multidimensional models of conservatism and liberalism using at least social and economic agenda therefore seem as a more useful way to describe political orientation for most of the population. Empirical part of the study proposes a partial replication of two relevant studies to test a thesis of similar multidimensionality of the left-right ideological orientation scale in czech population. This could at the same time provide a relevant american-czech comparison.

The experimental part focuses on the mechanism of collective blame in relation to relevant moderating factors, based on previous studies. The research itself is a replication study, following the work of Denson et al. (2006). It is a correlation study that mainly focuses on whether membership in different types of groups is related to different levels of assigned collective blame, and also to explore which other included variables are correlating with collective blame attribution. The research data were collected through an online questionnaire. Respondents were mostly recruited through the database of the PLESS laboratory. Our research's result mainly confirms the result of the original study from Denson et al....
