Chronicle of the monastery of Cross-bearers with the red star in Cheb in 1829-1936 and its relevance for the monastery's history from the 1550s to 1631

Ve velmi nedávné době byl ve Státním okresním archivu v Chebu konečně pořízen inventář zde uložené části archivu zdejší křižovnické komendy. Součástí tohoto archivu je také kronika komendy, kterou začal psát tehdejší chebský komtur Leopold StOhr v letech 1829-1836. Podstatná část knihy je věnována historii chebské komendy od samotného založení špitálu. Podrobněji mohl díky zachovaným dokumentům kronikář popsat historii komendy počínaje polovinou 16. století, protože právě dokumenty týkající se reformace a událostí za třicetileté války mu byly k dispozici v archivu komendy, který se tehdy nacházel v sídle chebského komendátora u sv. Bartoloměje. A navíc, což ještě v té době nebylo zcela běžné, kronikář důsledně odkazuje na zdroj, ze kterého poznatky pro svou kroniku vyčetl. Lze tedy přímo jeho práci porovnat s některými dochovanými prameny z 16. a 17. století, na které se autor kroniky odvolává. Není však úplně jednoduché dokumenty dohledat, protože archiv byl rozdělen a jeho část převezena do Prahy, kde byl roztříděn do kartonů. Přesto jsem se alespoň částečně pokusila porovnat kronikářovo pojetí s autentickými prameny a na některých místech ho snad trochu doplnit. Na počátku bych se alespoň krátce zmínila o původu a charakteru Řádu křižovníků s červenou hvězdou. Podnět k jeho vzniku dala samotná Svatá...

Struggle for Šwidnica-Jawor duchy under the reign of the Luxembourg dynasty

Shire of successors of Boleslav I. of Svídnice (Schweidni tz, Swidnica) represents an anomaly in the history of Silesia. Dukes of this branch of Silesian house of Piasts were thoroughly refusing to became vassals of czech king by profi ting of their rel a tionship wi th Wi ttelsbachs, Habsbourgs, Anj ous, as well as wi th polish king Casimir III of Poland. Bolek II of Svidnice was the most powerfull adversary of Luxembourgs. Even by using a military force, John of Luxembourg couldn't break his opposition. Situation had radically changed by the Treaty of Namyslov (Namslau, Namyslów) between Charles IV and Casimir III of Poland in 1348. By this treaty, polish king officially renounced to support his nephew. Charles IV was aware of quali ties of Bolek II and he didn't want to loose him by blessing his ego. So he didn't choose the way of violence, but he gave him a lot of privileges to "buy" his support. Czech king offered to Bolek II the alliance that he couldn't refuse. By this alliance he allowed Bolek to fulfill his power ambi tions what should have never been done, if he had remained adversary of Luxembourg's. From a Burgher House through the Imperial Court to Loket Castle. The Careers of Kaspar and Mates Schlicks in Bohemia, Empire and Saxony ( 1390 - 1487)

From a Burgher House through the Imperial Court to Loket Castle The Careers of Kaspar and Mates Schlicks in Bohemia, Empire and Saxony (1390-1487) The presented thesis is devoted to the oldest history of the Schlick family. The rise of an originally burgher-class family was based on the court and chancellery career of Kaspar Schlick († 1449); the latter bolstered his successes in the services of Sigismund of Luxembourg and Albrecht and Fridrich Habsburgs by an array of false documents that significantly contributed to the change of his social and economic status (his false promotion to the estate of a count and gaining a fortune). In the second half of the 15th century, after Kaspar's death, his brother Mates and his sons struggled for the preservation of acquired status and health. The following topics were investigated: (1) The utilization of court services and careers for burghers' getting into aristocratic circles, as exemplified by the person of Kaspar Schlick († 1449); (2) The search of strategies the Schlicks - Mates Schlick in particular († 1487) - took to limit themselves from the aristocratic environment, part of which they became. Brewery in the Chamber Domaine of Brandýs nad Labem in the 16-17th Century

Ondřej ZICH, Brewery in the Chamber Domaine of Brandýs nad Labem in the 16- 17th Century, The thesis, Charles University in Prague, The Faculty of Arts, 2013, The thesis presents the two main breweries in the Chamber Domain of Brandýs nad Labem between 1547 and 1700, the communal municipal brewery of the brewers' guild in Brandýs nad Labem and the emperor's plant by the castle in the same place. The description of the municipal brewery lets us see in detail the statutes and working of the brewers' guild, including its membership and its problems with beer taverns, through the municipal and guild chronicle. On the other hand, research about the castle brewery is based on sources from Nova manipulace indicating its building adjustment, employees and profit. The final part of the thesis is dedicated to the mutual territorial and price competition and a comparison of both breweries. War, Arms and Armour in the Representative Strategies of Bohemian and Moravian Aristocracy, 1550 - 1750

In Czech historical writing, history of aristocracy has been on a rise ever since the turbulent days of 1990s. It has always been characterized by application of various methods borrowed form different other fields, such as cultural or social history as well as historical anthropology, and its primary goal was to understand the mentality of the specific social class that is early modern aristocracy. Throughout time, several approaches emerged form the initial probing: first, study of political culture and power; second, study of aristocratic courts and residences; and, third, study of aristocratic family and its life-cycle. All this research was originally focused on 16th century aristocracy; however, it also successfully tackles topics of late 17th and 18th century in recent years as well. Study of aristocratic residences especially has quite a long tradition in Czech historiography, following the lines of socially interpreted art history. On the other hand, as military history is a rather neglected part of writing on the early modern era, this problem transpires into the connection of warfare and aristocracy in 16th to 18th century. Kingdom of Bohemia - Neighbour of Bavaria in the Late Middle Ages and in the Early Modern Times

DOCTORAL THESIS Ivana HERGLOVÁ --- KINGDOM OF BOHEMIA - NEIGHBOUR OF BAVARIA IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES AND IN THE EARLY MODERN TIMES --- Abstract --- The thesis is dedicated to research in the field of Bavarian-Bohemian relations, mainly in the field of politics, in the 15th and early 16th century. Main interest is given to the contacts between the Kingdom of Bohemia and the four partial duchies into which Bavaria was subdivided in this period - (Lower) Bavaria-Straubing, Bavaria-Munich, Bavaria-Landshut and Bavaria-Ingolstadt. The work is divided into four large parts. The first goes on the Hussite Wars (1419-1434/36). The second part analyses Czech royal election of the year 1440 and the motives of the selected candidate, the duke Albrecht III of Bavaria-Munich, to finally decline the election. This chapter is followed by a summary of the political cooperation between Czech kings Ladislaus Posthumus (1453-1457) and George of Podiebrad (1458-1471) and the duke Louis/Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut. The last chapter of the thesis describes the attempt of the Bavarian dukes (of the now reunited Duchy of Bavaria) William/Wilhelm IV and Louis/Ludwig X to become the kings of Bohemia as a part of their competition for hegemony in the middle European region with the house of Habsburg.
