Studies on Karel Hynek Mácha by Jakub Arbes

This thesis discusses the literary-historical and literary-critical texts of Jakub Arbes, which deal with the personality and work of Karel Hynek Mácha. The introduction outlines the theoretical basis on which Arbes evaluated literary works, describes his relationship to literary criticism and literary history, and briefly presents his most important works in this field. It then focuses on Arbes' articles dedicated to Karel Hynek Mácha. The central theme is the importance of Arbes' studies on Mácha in contemporary literary criticism and literary history and Arbes's contribution to the preservation of Mácha's legacy. By the Paths Through the Text: Didactic Interpretation and Interpretive Tasks in Secondary School Literature Teaching

Literary work as a landscape - interpretation of text as setting a path in it - a didactic interpretation as providing a map. This (largely familiar and well-established) metaphor is at the heart of the work entitled By the Paths Through the Text: Didactic Interpretation and Interpretive Tasks in Secondary School Literature Teaching. Even with the help of that image (but mainly underpinned by reception and semiotic literary theories), the text in its first chapters establishes and elaborates such a conception of interpretation (the formulation of meaning in relation to a particular reader) and its didactic attribute (its own potential to teach interpretation), which seems to be advantageous for thinking about interpretation- oriented teaching (and interpretation taking place in dialogue more generally) and about the possibilities to assess (especially with closed tasks) the degree of students' acquisition of the process of interpretation, in the last chapters. To this end, it puts the theoretical concept of 'interpretation skills' - the possibility of segmenting the act of the journey towards interpretation into potential steps that can be intelligibly named, taught and (relatively separately) tested - at the centre, and even attempts a tentative enumeration of these. Ladislav Klíma. His Reception in Czech Culture

The thesis deals with the reception of Ladislav Klíma's work and personality in Czech culture. It is divided into four sections. In the first one we focus on the reactions to his work during his lifetime. In addition to the reflection on the plays and published books, we also follow small magazine polemics and partially explain the biographical background of published books. In the second section we examine the changes in the perception of Klíma after his death in 1928 until 1948. We present reviews of posthumously published books, obituaries and key interpretations of Klíma's thought. We examine the relations of avant-garde artists to Klíma and the personalities who significantly influenced the fate of his work. The third part presents reflections on Klíma's work after the communist coup in 1948 until the revolution in 1989. We look at the efforts to eradicate the author's name from cultural consciousness, marxist interpretations of his thought, the prominent authors of Czech literature who were influenced by him, interpretations from the 1960s, and the reception of his work in the alternative culture in the 1970s and 1980s. Gustav R. Opočenský and his reflection in Czech literature

The essay describes pre-war situation and G.R. Opočenský in this situation. It uses famous cultural people as Jaroslav Hašek, Z. M. Kuděj, Eduard Bass or Jakub Arbes for better describing of position of G. R. Opočenský. This study also engages in term "pražská bohéma" and its unclear definition and Opočenský's collections of poems. These collections are analysed and put to one of some literary lines of this era. Finding place of Opočenský in literary-historical programme is reason of the analysis of collections and its essay overall.

Theater Critic Václav Řezáč

The thesis maps the First Republic critical activity of Václav Řezáč. Its aim is to analyse Řezáč's theatre reviews and then to place them in the context of his writing activity. The thesis is based on a bibliography of articles published in the magazines such as: Eva, časopis moderní ženy, Český svět, ilustrovaný čtrnáctideník and Svět ve filmu a obrazech. In these magazines, Řezáč published dozens of critical essays between 1938 and 1934, before the publication of his first novel, Větrná setba.

New reality. Man's path to humanity and a better world thanks to teachers-wizards

The comparatist work provides a comprehensive and broad view of a specific literary genre of the last decades, which is called "dialogue with teacher-wizards". A wizard is understood as a person with unusual, supernatural abilities who imparts knowledge of a certain kind to his or her apprentice with a specific goal in mind. A literary analysis of the genre (including an excursus into the history of dialogic forms) and an analysis of selected structural parts of the wizard's "myth" are made as a basis for comparison. Finally, a basic line of interpretation is outlined. The aim of the thesis is to lay the foundations for the study of this "new" genre in the Czech literary environment and to provide summary information on the C. Castaneda and V. Megre. Michael Kácha and Czech Literature

This thesis presents the personality of Michael Kácha, anarchist editor and publisher. Biographical sketch shows not only his editorial activity and journalism (for instance in journals Práce, Zádruha, Mladý průkopník, Klíčení) and his work as a publisher (Družstvo Kniha, Kacha Verlag), but pays attention also to his activities within workers' and anarchist, respectively anarcho-communist organizations, which is inextricably connected with his literary activity. A bibliography of texts of Michael Kácha and a list of books published with his participation is the part of this thesis.

"To be a tree where there is no hubbub": Poetics of Solitude in the Works of Ludmila Macešková

The thesis follows the line of solitude in the poetry of Jan Kameník (which is the pen name of Ludmila Macešková). It notices the impossibility of classifying him into the literary groups active from 40's to 60's. It also observes his dramatic way which was motivated by desire to find the expression for his spiritual experience. First, the thesis focuses on places which illustrate the phases during the way. Then it centres on the poetic language which moves to the boundaries of communicability. Last, it comes to the touch like specific revelation of name where all differences are overcame.

The Eternal Boyhood of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic

The thesis attempts to describe the life and work of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic through an analysis of his lifestyle, i.e. the way in which he organized, embellished and individualized his life. Karásek sought to shape his existence as an artwork, in accordance with the inspirational concepts of the contemporary and antecedent thinkers and artists (e.g. Oscar Wilde, Walter Pater and Maurice Maeterlinck). He accented its integrity and orientation towards beauty. In accord with his aesthetic vision (and his literary work) Karásek conditioned beauty with sadness and pain and attempted to emphasize melancholic beauty, unity in disunion. For that purpose he would accentuate particularly the disintegrative, critical elements, evoking the impression of unsuccessful, self-destructive endeavor to reach life's high ideal. This corresponded with his tragic concept of the artist immolating himself for his Art. I approach Karásek's lifestyle through the use of the terms youth and (eternal) boyhood, which Karásek himself employed as symbols of mournfully beautiful existence in his literary work.
