The portrayal of women through gender stereotypes by Czech photographers on Instagram social network

The aim of this thesis is to analyse methods of capturing and presenting women applied by selected Czech male and female photographers on the social network of Instagram. The first subchapter addresses the topic of digital photography, the transition from the analogue age to the digital one, and the manipulation of the photographic image. The second and third subchapters study social networks along with their impact on the contemporary society, focusing in detail on Instagram and its visual communication. The following part of the thesis addresses gender issues, gender stereotypes, and social inequalities, focusing apart from others on gender stereotypes in visual media and on social networks. The practical part is based on two approaches - a quantitative content analysis of visual communications, i.e. research into selected Instagram content by eight male and female photographers, and qualitative interviews with some of these authors. Analysis of Potential Impact of Contemporary Music and Lyrics on Gender Construction from the Audience Perspective

This diploma thesis focuses on the topic of gender in music and also its perception by the audience. The research topic was chosen for the increasing consumption of music media and for the lack of research focused on gender in music and on the perception of music lyrics in general. The research part uses both the qualitative content analysis of music lyrics contained in the sample of Billboard Top Charts songs for the past 50 years (between years 1970-2019), and also semi-structured qualitative interviews on a multi-generation sample. Included in the content analysis was the total of 500 songs, interviewed were 8 respondents of various genders and ages to accomplish a diverse sample. The topics of males, females and their relationship proved to be the dominant topics in the research music sample, and it also went through a significant development over time. The research identified a movement from metaphoric language to explicit, at the same time it identified a development of the metaphors. Also observed was the inclination to communicate different topics between male and female artists. Use of print and online media among women and men on maternity or parental leave

The thesis deals with the role of media in the life of "young" parents. The theoretical part presents the current trends in the attitude to printed and online media for a selected target group, specifically women and men on maternity and parental leave. The principal question of the thesis is the attitude of a selected group of people to the media content. Has the relation to the media subjectively changed in this new life role? The research method is a qualitative interview with ten respondents (seven women and three men). The analysis is based on methods of grounded theory - first at the level of open coding, then the axial coding. The conclusion summarizes the researched findings, and among other things, whether the interviewees see changes in their relation to the media due to parenthood and if they do, which changes they realize.
Influence of journalistic proffesion on personal life of journalists

anglicky This diploma thesis focuses on the influence of journalistic profession on personal, private and family life of journalists. The aim is to find different approaches by which people employed in the media approach their work and reconcile personal life with employment, as well as to identify and describe possible differences in attitudes between men and women. The method of qualitative research is semi-structured interviews followed by analysis through grounded theory. A sample of respondents made up of men and women who work in the media of various types, focus and reach at the time of writing this diploma thesis should help to get a comprehensive view of the matter.
Media Image of Menstruation in Mass media and User generated content

This diploma thesis discusses the image of menstruation in the mass media and in user generated content. Menstruation is a biological process that is essential for reproduction. It not only plays a specific role from the biological point of view, but also from the cultural aspect. Menstruation has remained a taboo and been stigmatised for many years. Today this topic is no longer completely taboo, but some stigma and stereotypes remain. This diploma thesis is based on the theory of social construction of reality, where the mass media is considered one element involved in the construction of this reality. The aim of this work is to analyse the image of menstruation in the mass media created by professionals and compare it with the image of this topic in user generated content created by the public on social networks. Two research methods are used to obtain a comprehensive view of the specific issue - a quantitative content analysis and qualitative framework analysis. The quantitative content analysis is used to establish the frequency and occurrence of the topic of menstruation within mass media. The framework analysis is used to establish how this topic is represented and framed in the mass media and in user generated content.
Research of the cult series Sex and the City perceived influence of its female spectators

A large number of professional articles or academic works have been written about the series Sex in the City, but none of them directly dealt with the impact of the series on their fans. From an empirical point of view, the diploma thesis Research of the Perception of the Influence of the Cult Series HBO Sex in the City on its Viewers is a qualitative analysis. It is examined opinions of the series' viewers on various aspects of the series and also their motivation to watch such media content are examined through in-depth interviews. In the qualitative analysis, the author focuses mainly on the phenomena such as gender stereotyping, consumer lifestyle (product placement in the series) or, for instance, the postfeminist tone of the series itself. The inspiration for this thesis was the work of Ien Ang, who also focused on fans of the cult series Dallas in her researches and tried to interpret the success of this phenomenon through qualitative research.
The Analysis of Representation of Suicide and Self-Mutilation in Popular Culture in Years 1999-2019

The master thesis is focusing on the representation of suicides and self-mutilation in American production movies and television in the year 1999-2019. The thesis aims to find out, how are these phenomena shown and with whom popular culture connects them. The theoretical part is dealing with social and media construction of reality, stereotype, stigmatization, and clearing the concepts and definitions of phenomena. For better understanding this part also includes a short presentation of socially deviant behavior since examined phenomena are part of it. The analysis was made based on qualitative content analysis and completed with short quantitative analysis for sociodemographic comparison with available real data. The sample contains 23 motion pictures as are films and series. Based on them and with processes of grounded theory the coding was done, typology was made and pointed out findings with whom American production connects these phenomena and how they represent them in popular culture. Those findings are important for their relations to media construction of reality as non-experts can perceive the way it is represented for their own.

A diploma work titled The Audience Is Always Right: An Analysis of Audience Viewing Patterns of "Your Face Sounds Familiar" TV Show is focusing on the research of television audience motivation to watch the popular imitation reality show Your Face Sounds Familiar a Czech television TV Nova channel production. From the perspective of classical etnographic audience research and of cultural studies theoretical discourse, the presented qualitative analysis addresses particularly the capturing and interpretation of the viewers' pleasures which the audience experiences while watching the given show, and moreover it also deals with the social functions and cultural meanings the show conveys to its consumers. The central finding of the analysis is the fact that the viewer's pleasures oscillates around their interaction with cultural identities the production of which the show systematically addresses. The origin of the pleasure is based on the mechanism of a semiotic imitation game with these cultural identities, or as the case may be, it is based on a game vesting in the recognition of pop-culture references and subsequent comparison of iconic features of the original identity with its acted resemblance. Media Representation of Motherhood in Selected Czech Media

This diploma thesis is focused on a representation of motherhood in the selected Czech media. Motherhood itself and the view on it had changed in 21st century in many ways as shows the recent research. The goal of this thesis is to show how is the topic "motherhood" represented in selected Czech women's magazines and what kind of media construction of this topic are presented to the readers. To reach the goal of this research the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Specifically, the frame analysis and quantitative content analysis. The work begins with the theoretical part which contents the recent concepts of feministic media research, because this thesis is based on the feministic and gender theory perspective. The empirical part of the thesis contents the results of the research. Firstly, the nine frames that had been identified are presented and evaluated than quantitative representation of the frames follow. Finally, there is the evaluation of the quantitative content analysis to which side research questions and hypotheses relate. The results are evaluated and compared with theory and foreign research in the discussion and the final part. The limits of the research and the outline of further possible research in this area are also presented.
Gender-specific perceptions of online dating: the impact on shaping values of its users

ANOTATION Abstract The diploma thesis aims to focus on the online platform Tinder, which is an online dating platform tailored for meeting new people. It is a method of communication that has become a common tool for communicating and forming new connections. The thesis focuses on the context and circumstances that has led to this type of behaviour, and explains based on the interdisciplinary cognitive research why has online dating taken such a forefront position when it comes to searching for a romantic partner in the 21st century. Last but not least, the diploma thesis observes if and how the perception of online dating differs based on gender, it will examine users' assumptions, stances and how according to their opinion will the use of Tinder be reflecting on shaping their values. The thesis is divided in three parts. The first part provides a theoretical context of pivotal issues of the paper, such as gender role with a focus on the aspect of relationships, a development of online dating phenomenon in modern society and also an introduction to online dating platform Tinder.
