The Opinionclashes and Searching for Compromises. The Genealogy and Typology of Conflicts in Charter 77 (1977-1989)
Suk, Marek ; Pullmann, Michal (advisor) ; Bugge, Peter (referee) ; Vilímek, Tomáš (referee)
of the Thesis The goal of my thesis is to uncover Charter 77 and describe less researched or unknown aspects of its activity such as: 1) searching for effective forms of legal defence against the secret police pressure and for appropriate ways of working; 2) adopting the principles of democratic discussion; 3) the process of creation of the Charter Documents. My research questions are: What was the "production proces" of the Charter's Declaration and other key documents? Who was involved in it and to what extent? What problems were coming up and how they had been solved? Who was making decisions on the behalf of the Charter and with what consequences? What were the reasons for dissapointment of some Chartists and who separated from the Charter? What development did the relations between the representatives of the various oppositional currents within the Charter undergo? How did they contribute and what were they criticized for by others? How did the Chartists respond to the non-political politics? Who opposed it and in what ways were (and still are) these objections valuable? To what extent did they maintain this notion or deviate from it in the late 1980s, when the normalization regime was sinking into an ever deeper crisis? In what ways were they restricted by non-political politics? What was the...
Hegemony struggle according to KSČ
Bruna, Jaroslav ; Vilímek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
(in English) The author tries to describe the transformation of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in relation to itself and the surrounding environment, especially in the period from 17th November to 21st December 1989. He will use primarily the articles from Rudé právo and a stenographic record of the unscheduled session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia on 24th and 26th November 1989 which was published under the name Poslední hurá. He considers it appropriate to put into context the events of November and December 1989, with political development in Czechoslovakia in January, at the turn of June and July, and in October 1989. This analysis attempt will be based on the principles of general linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure and discourse theory of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. The combination of hegemonic analysis and deconstruction will be used as a method of workflow. When analyzing the transformation of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, the author attempts to rely primarily on three principles deriving from discourse theory. The identity is not a fixed essence but it is created in the political struggles of the content of specific concepts. There have been attempts to fully fixate the identity of individuals, groups, society. But the identity is...
State Security in 1989
Procházka, Libor ; Vilímek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Štefek, Martin (referee)
Thesis wants to show how well the Czechoslovak secret police was informed about the activities, plans and tactics of the political opposition especially in the year 1989. The main sources for the paper are the authentic records of the State Security as regular situation reports, information on the security situation in the country, inside directives of the secret police, but also some documents of the Communist Party leadership. Text shows which were the most important activities of the independent initiatives in the viewpoint of StB and prove that the security forces of the regime seem to might have had (surprisingly) good information on the opposition initiatives. Paper is also aimed on some functional aspects of the State Security, which did not exist in a political vacuum, but was directly subordinated to the Communist Party. Finally, it describes changes in the organizational structures of StB, particularly linked to the reform in 1988. Key words: State security, year 1989, opposition in Czechoslovakia, Charta 77, Movement for Civic Freedom, Obroda, Democratic initiative
The sound to the everyday's life and thought of the middle class of society in 1970's and 1980's (Oral history)
Krákorová, Alena ; Čechurová, Jana (advisor) ; Vilímek, Tomáš (referee)
In my thesis I try to solve the problem of the everyday's life and thought of the middle class of society in 1970's and 1980's in the CSSR. I use the methods of the oral history and I work with narrators and their memories. The selection of narrators abided by advance criterions. All narrators had to be in the watched period employers of the ZPA !akovice. The selection was limited also by the age of narrators and working position (technical-administrative sector). I was making interviews with eight narrators that fulfilled all the conditions. Next to a free narration of each of them, main topics of interview were: some important historical events (1968, 1989), perception of the period called "normalizace", relationships between the people, national jubilee and festivals, travelling and recreation, family, leisure time and spare-time activities etc. . In my thesis I put brain to analyse and interpret the interviews and before that I try to explain my motivation and various expectations. The reason why I do this is that I try to find some general context which will help readers to create some visual angle, that they can use to understand my analysis and interpretations of the interviews. I enlarged the interpretations of two topics. The first: Perception of "West" and travelling in the period called...
The problems of theft/pilferage/misappropriation and related pathologies in the perestroika period (1986-1989) in the Rudé právo
Bruna, Jaroslav ; Vilímek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
(thefts of socialist property) This diploma thesis observes how the problems of thefts of socialist property in Czechoslovakia were presented in the Rudé právo, the press body of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, between 1986 and 1989, or which discrepancies appeared in this presentation. The view on thefts of socialist property in the terms of law comes before the real core of the thesis - by putting stress on the definition of the socialist property in the Constitution, the given criminal act in the Penal Code, the view of the juristic literature on the social dangerousness of the given action, here represented by the Socialistická zákonnost journal. Afterwards the author focuses on how the problems of thefts (but also that of protection) of socialist property were related to the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (or rather to its officials), top managers and rank and file employees, which he illustrates on particular cases. In the end the author compares the articles of the Rudé právo with some empirical findings - in relation to the survey of the Institute for public opinion poll by the Federal statistical office about the discipline and the check on the workplace, in relation to the statistics about the economic criminal activity mentioned in the German written...
"It Is a Cyclotron!" Forms and Strategies of the Confrontation Between Opposition and Secret Police in the 70's and 80's.
Hošek, Jakub ; Randák, Jan (advisor) ; Vilímek, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with forms and strategies of interference of Secret police and opposition during 1970s and 1980s. Strategies are monitored both from the side of dissent and Secret police. In the first chapter the opposite manuals for contact with Secret police are introduced. These form basic relationship delimitation of dissent and Secret police from the view of opposition. In the second part of the first chapter the manuals are embedded into wider context of legal consciousness, which represented basic element of mutual interference of these two groups. In the second chapter the strategies and methods of Secret police, which were used in the battle against "the enemy within", are introduced. Besides specific precautions used against dissidents the material and technical superiority of Secret police, which was used in the conflict against opposition, is noticeable. The final chapter represents categorization of strategies and approaches, which were chose by dissidents in contact with Secret police. The categorization originated on the basis of several factors - the character of dissidents, their experience with security authorities but also the activity, which was practised in the framework of opposite environment, belonged among them. Resulting text shows how much the worlds of dissent...

CSSR/GDR opposition after 1968: a comparison of paths to opposition, mutual perception, plus views of the security bodies
Vilímek, Tomáš ; Kocian, Jiří (advisor) ; Bureš, Jan (referee) ; Otáhal, Milan (referee)
This thesis as submitted has been devoted to comparison of anti-regime activities in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (CSSR) and in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) after 1968. It does not represent a complete survey of opposition movements in the countries subjected to comparison; more likely, it should be a comparative study focused essentially to three fundamental thematic fields. Following the outline of state of contemporary research in the matter, a survey of major (principal) archive sources and, last but not least, the methodology of elaboration of this theses, the author has been focused at the issue of typology of the anti-regime activities, without aiming to expand further the typological scale with new terms, for that one seems to be rich enough already. Rather, it accents the needs of mutual interconnection of these categorisation attempts with some individual aspects of the opposition conduct. Consequently, proper attention has been devoted to the issue of social anchoring of the opposition activities, as well as to a search of key factors of transformation; of a rebirth, in fact, of social refusal into opposition as such.
State Economic Plan in Postwar Czechoslovakia. Production and Consumption of Beer in 1945-1961
Minařík, Martin ; Kubů, Eduard (advisor) ; Jančík, Drahomír (referee) ; Vilímek, Tomáš (referee)
This dissertation has the ambition to contribute to the understanding of the economic system in Czechoslovakia during the post-war socialist transformation and the subsequent consolidation of the communist regime in the 1950s. The means of knowledge is the state economic plan, which has gradually become one of the key determinants of the Czechoslovak economy after the Second World War. The process of forming a system of state-controlled economy is monitored from the field of view of selected industry - brewing. The importance of the brewing industry consists in the deep-rooted specifics of beer consumption in Czech society. The research focuses on the penetration of post-war national, social and economic transformations through Czechoslovak production and beer consumption. It focuses on the limits of business freedom in brewing industry in the period of the Third Republic, transformation of private enterprise into collective forms of ownership, specifics and detail of the state plan and its formation in the context of crucial domestic political and international events. The results of the dissertation provide information about the mechanism of state economic planning, the development of traditional Czech industry and beer consumption in the period of state socialism, and at the same time provide...
