Applicability of Systemic Approach to the Analysis of Geostrategic Importance of a Transborder Region: the Arctic Case
Valková, Irena ; Romancov, Michael (advisor) ; Ženka, Jan (referee) ; Landovský, Jakub (referee)
The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate a new empirical and systemic geopolitical approach to the study of the ongoing territorial dispute in the Arctic resulting from the desire of two nation states, Denmark and Russia, to extend their own northernmost limits of the Exclusive Economic Zone to the central part of the Arctic Ocean. This approach combines geographic, legal and political analytical perspectives with quantitative research design to produce an inter-disciplinary study. Empirical evidence on the long-term socio-geographic development in the region (1993-2013) is provided together with information on particular territorial gains and losses for all decision-makers that arise in a number of potential scenarios (options). Variation in each decision-maker's aggregate national socio-geographic resource, as implied by particular territorial modifications in the central part of the Arctic Ocean, serves as a basis for derivation of nontrivial payoffs on each option in the dispute. These payoffs are introduced into a three-player graph model for conflict resolution (Denmark, Russia, and the World) and stable dispute solutions are suggested on the basis of different combinations of decision-makers' strategies, whose optimality is evaluated as well. Finally, alternative scenarios of...
Analysis of the Russian Attitude toward the Concept of Humanitarian Intervention
Vargová, Martina ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Valková, Irena (referee)
Bachelor thesis Analysis of the Russian Attitude toward the Concept of Humanitarian Intervention is primarily concerned with the way in which the Russian federation legitimizes its inconsistent approach to the currently debated concept of humanitarian intervention. The main goal of the thesis is to point out on what normative grounds the Russian side formulates justification of its position as a defender or as an opponent of the concept. Thesis is based on the constructivist perception of international relations and depicts the Russian federation as a valid member of the international system which legitimizes all of its actions or inactions in terms of universally accepted norms of this system. Analysis of the Russian political discourse shows that norms which determine justification of humanitarian intervention are highlighted in cases when the Russian federation implements military intervention potentially including humanitarian dimension (if necessary exaggerated by the interpretation of the Russian political authorities). In case, that the Russian federation opposes the possibility to put the concept of humanitarian intervention in practice, it highlights the norms which contradict the concept from the very beginning of its occurrance. The text is divided into three main chapters. Chapter one...

Legal Aspects of EU Funding and Financial Mechanisms in the Czech Republic
Válková, Irena ; Boháč, Radim (advisor) ; Marková, Hana (referee) ; Papoušková, Zdenka (referee)
1 Legal Aspects of EU Funding and Financial Mechanisms in the Czech Republic Abstract This dissertation examines legal aspects of EU funding and the financial contributions from the EFTA countries (financial mechanisms) in the Czech Republic. The main goal of the paper is divided into several objectives. First one is to provide an overall overview of taxonomy of legal aspects of financial relationships between recipients of financial law. Secondly, I strive to evaluate these aspects from the perspective of legal principles with the help of methods of interpretation such as linguistic meaning, historical or teological interpretation. Thirdly, the reflection of the real life needs in law is a subject to examination. Finally, I propose solutions of problematic areas. To be able to meet this goal I needed to find something which would make a link among legal entities and units directly or indirectly involved into the process of EU funding and financial contributions from the EFTA countries. Therefore, for the purpose of my dissertation, I define financial information as information about rights, powers and obligations of recipients of financial law established while budgeting and providing funds and information about secondary subject of the legal relationships which are funds. I compared the financial rules...
Critical assessment of the Arctic's geostrategic importance during World War I and World War II
Pastorková, Sabrina ; Valková, Irena (advisor) ; Kofroň, Jan (referee)
in English This work is devoted to the role of the Arctic region during World War I and World War II. It is aimed to assess the strategical importance of the Arctic based on the analysis of classical geopolitical theories of Sir Halford Mackinder and General Karl Haushofer. The analysis is supplemented by historical outline of military activities in the Arctic during world wars. The method used in this interpretative study of the role of the Arctic region is comparison. We use historical-analytic approach which takes into account the role of system structures of macrosocial features and specific behaviour of actors in particular cases. It is a basic attempt to a comparative history which is a part of the analytical- descriptive comparative study. We compare different approaches of the classical geopolitical theories towards the Arctic region. Subsequently, we focus on military activities from the beginning of the World War I till the end of World War II in the Arctic. We deal with significant issues such as resources, transport routes or the role of Alaska. The work is concluded by critical assessment of their approaches and their potential correlation with military operations of World War I and World War II.

Fragmentation of political space in Caucasus: Case studies of secessionist territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia
Bokeria, Levan ; Romancov, Michael (advisor) ; Valková, Irena (referee)
The main objective of this thesis deals with the efforts of de facto states of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on secesionism. The first part studies the historical roots of dispute among Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Georgia. Mutual disputes have led to an armed conflict in the early nineties after which Abkhazia and South Ossetia broke away from Georgia and began seeking the international recognition. After the Georgian-Russian war in 2008 they managed to achieve the partial recognition. The biggest ally of the afore-mentioned countries seems to be Russia which provides them with political, economical and military support. The thesis also analyzes the role of Russia in the conflict and its subsequent implementation. The final chapter focuses on the evaluation of Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's statehood.
