Velikost a vnitřní struk- tura kartelu, charakteristika účastník· kartelové dohody, ukazatele vnějšího prostředí na trhu, vnitřní kontrolní mechanismy a proměnné, určující účin- nost antimonopolní politiky.
Analysis of the effect of lowest price criterion in the selection process of public procurement
Blahová, Alexandra ; Skuhrovec, Jiří (advisor) ; Vacek, Pavel (referee)
Public procurement in the Czech Republic is a complex process directly settled by the legal procurement framework which defines various contract-awarding procedures. This study focuses on the part of selection process when procurers can decide between using lowest price criterion or most economically advantageous tender (MEAT). We found an evidence of preference of lowest price criterion, especially in the recent years. The main goal of the study is therefore to provide a comprehensive analysis of the leading drivers of selection of specific criteria and their consequential effects. Taking into account various characteristics of public procurement processes, we found out that in general lowest price criterion is preferred by public contracting authorities and by procurers with larger number of employees. This type of selection process also consequently provides an interesting trade-off between higher competition in terms of number of bidders, higher stability in terms of less interventions by the Office for the Protection of Competition (OPC) but also higher probability of consequent extraworks.
Evaluation of the Office for Protection of Competition Decisions Regarding Abuse of Dominance with an Effects-Based Approach
Hruban, Jiří ; Vacek, Pavel (advisor) ; Matoušek, Jindřich (referee)
The bachelor thesis evaluates decisions of the (Czech) Office for the Protection of Competition (OPC) in abuse-of-dominance cases with an emphasis on its impact on consumers. The first part briefly summarises available effects-based approaches to abuse of dominance. The second part analyses five particular cases that were decided by the OPC. The author points out several recurring weaknesses of the OPC's economic reasoning. In some instances, the OPC seems to be using selective economic argumentation only to support the result at which it arrived by intuition. Economic evidence is thus interpreted with respect to the pre-defined conclusion; it is not investigated unbiasedly, and resulting justification is unsound. Although the OPC knows a wide variety of tools for economic analysis, it is sometimes unable to identify the situations at which individual tools should be applied. Does Bitcoin Have Potential To Co-Function with Fiat Money?
Kurka, Josef ; Dědek, Oldřich (advisor) ; Vacek, Pavel (referee)
This paper examines the potential of Bitcoin, a decentralized digital currency, to pose competition to fiat currencies. To accomplish that, Bitcoin would have to become efficient as a store of value. Thus far, high volatility makes it inferior in that respect. We analyze the dynamics and drivers of Bitcoin volatility using GARCH and HAR models. Moreover, we test for presence of asymmetries displayed by stock, commodity and currency markets. That way we can conclude, whether volatility of Bitcoin behaves similarly to currencies, commodities or stocks. Lastly we reveal interconnections between these markets and market for Bitcoin. We find significant evidence for the leverage effect documented for stock market. Furthermore, the effect of trading volume, documented for currency markets, displays an opposite sign in our research. Results of spillover estimation suggest Bitcoin is the most interconnected with commodity market. Thus, we conclude Bitcoin does not behave similarly to currencies in terms of volatility; hence is not a good candidate to substitute them. Moral Factors And Their Influence Upon Career Choices of High School Students
Lukášová, Hana ; Klusák, Miroslav (advisor) ; Vacek, Pavel (referee) ; Kirovová, Iva (referee)
The subject of this research, namely career choice of high school graduates, has been considered from the position of moral reasoning. Qualitative analysis of data collected from interviews carried out with 32 graduates identifies career choice to be a significant factor determining the identity of each graduate. The research is based on assumption that moral reasoning is nourished by each one's identity and loyality to oneself, respectively. The basis of this career identity is formed by so called "inveteracy", reflected by various ways in individual's attempt to make a choice that is authentic. Categorically speaking, there exist "plots", that make career selection process complicated, as well as "problematizations", that make any authentic choice virtually impossible. Career choice is interpreted by means of three domains throughout which it becomes apparent both how this process fosters the individual's relationship with the outside world, with those closest to him/her and with himself/herself and what kind of affect this relationship has on his/her very identity. During the research, career choice turns out to be a continual and complex process that far surpasses the actual period of submitting a college application.
An Evaluation of Water Supply Ownership in Europe
Klímová, Dana ; Vacek, Pavel (advisor) ; Kosturák, Matej (referee)
1 Abstract This thesis deals with the topic of effective ownership structures in the water supply industry in Europe. It gives background information on the types of ownership and the cooperation between public and private sector. Furthermore, it gives an overview of state regulation and the competetive nature of the water supply market and explains how the water is priced by the companies. The core of the thesis is the evaluation of performance and effectiveness of private and public entities in water supply. Past literature and research are discussed regarding the performance of each sector and the case of Italian water supply services is given leading to reasons for water privatization. This work further develops the effectiveness of public-private partnership with regards to water provision. Moreover the multiple regression analysis shows the dependence of water tariffs on privatization level, competition, the amount of the freshwater resources and volume of abstraction, and 'richness' of selected European regions. This gives a reasoning of water price setting and shows the influence of ownership on the level of the tariffs. This paper provides not only solid understanding of the effective water supply ownership issue, but also provides a base and suggestions for further research. Keywords water supply,...
Pricing in the Airline Industry
Kašpar, Petr ; Vacek, Pavel (advisor) ; Klinger, Tomáš (referee)
The main goal of this thesis is to introduce the low-cost airline model and the concept of predatory pricing together with their basic elements. For good understanding of the topic, the thesis introduces basic requirements that have to be satisfied in order for the pricing to be classified as predatory and means of testing for their presence. The theoretical background is further analysed in the review of six antitrust policies dealing with predatory pricing. Last, two predatory cases from the airline industry are reviewed in order to show the approach that is given allegations of predatory pricing in practice. FDI and the spillover effect analysis: the case of Ethiopia
Turi, Abeba Nigussie ; Vacek, Pavel (advisor) ; Bauer, Michal (referee)
This thesis presents the spilling over effect resulting from the foreign direct investment with a focus on the manufacturing firms. It covers extensive econometric analysis based the Central Statistics Agency's (CSA) survey on the manufacturing firms and an Input-Output matrix done by the Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI). A pooled, Fixed and Random Effect estimation techniques are employed for estimating the log transferred production function augmented for the spillover proxies: Backward, Forward and Horizontal. Yet, as is stated in a lot of literatures like that of Javorcik (2004), the Cobb-Douglas production function suffers from the endogeneity problem and there is a need for a better estimation technique that can capture and solve this problem. As a result, I also used the Levinsohn-Petrin estimation technique, which used intermediate inputs as a proxy for unobservable shocks and the residuals from this estimate used as a measure of total factor productivity (TFP) of the firm. The TFP analysis from the LP estimation suggests that a one percentage point increase in the foreign presence in the downstream sectors is associated with the 1.1 percent rise in the total output of each supplying industries. Likewise, a one percentage point increase in the weighted share of output in the...
Family House Market in Europe during the Recent Crisis

Typ práce diplomová práce Autor/ka: Adam Béreš Rok zpracování 2015 Vedoucí práce PhDr. Pavel Vacek Ph.D. Abstrakt anglicky This thesis analyzes family house market in seven European countries: the Czech Republic, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland and Slovakia, together with two cities: Bratislava and Prague. The main goal is to compare family house price determinants in transitional countries with developed ones and capture possible effects of the recent economic crisis. In the first part, panel data models are employed to determine price determinants and any housing bubbles. Real GDP growth rate as a proxy for households' income, together with housing loan interest rate proved to be significant price determinant for both groups. Housing market in transitional countries is influenced only by demand side factors like unemployment. Housing market in developed countries is led by demand and supply side factors represented by labor cost index. In the second part of the analysis, VAR model is employed, for each country separately, to detect...
