Trdlica, Vilém ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Hošna, Jiří (referee)
The thesis analyzes the prose works of Czech literature of the 19th century, in which a character of a priest appears. The thesis interprets the passages of selected works of K. V. Rais, K. Klostermann, J. Š. Baar, I. Herrmann and B. Němcová. The works of fiction, which elaborate on the psychology of the characters more deeply, are set into rural environment. The priests enter various relationships and conflicts with the parishioners. By that, either a picture of a traditional village is illustrated, or, its profound transformation is depicted. The thesis is also devoted to analyzing the description of mutual relations between priests. For the figure of a priest in Czech literature is typical that he communicates with believers mainly through his office, but that he also expresses his social feeling beyond that. The thesis concludes that, in Czech literature of the 19th century, the priest is generally perceived and depicted as a character with predominantly positive features.
