A Content Analysis of the Media Reporting on Canada 150 with a Special Focus on Coverage of Indigenous Issues in the Canadian Media
Pešek, Ondřej ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Szobi, Pavel (referee)
In 2017, Canada celebrated a significant anniversary - 150 years since the enactment of the British North America Act, which granted Canada the status of Dominion. Celebrations were held across Canada to mark the occasion, with the main event that took place on July 1 at Parliament Hill. However, many Indigenous peoples, in light of past injustices and current problems, had no reason to celebrate and found the celebrations more like a reminder of colonialism. This is despite the government's effort to emphasize the theme of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples as part of the celebrations. This paper examines whether and, if so, how Indigenous perspectives on the celebrations were reflected in the Canadian media and whether these media contributed to the perpetuation of coloniality in Canada. At the beginning of the thesis, the current state of the academic debate on this topic, the terminology associated with Indigenous peoples, and the concept of coloniality are discussed. The thesis then examines the celebration of the sesquicentennial of Canada, with attention paid to both the organizational aspect and the relationship between the celebration and coloniality. The final section focuses on the media analysis, first introducing the methodology used and then presenting the results of the research....
Mass Privatisation and Privatised Firms' Performance in the Post-Privatisation Era: Empirical Evidence from the Czech Republic, Poland, and the Slovak Republic
Wang, Yanyi ; Szobi, Pavel (advisor) ; Akdogan, Idil (referee) ; Čech, František (referee)
This study used panel data on 25 privatised firms from the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia from 2000 to 2019 to explore the impact of different MPS on firm performance in the post-privatisation era. This paper then explored two main research questions: 1) The 2008 financial crisis presented problems for corporations with different governance models. How did firms built utilising various MPS models perform differently across the three countries in this context? 2) What factors would affect the performance of privatised firms in the post-privatisation era? Additionally, this study first used the Wilcoxon signed rank test to analyse six performance variables for the sample firms for eight years before and after 2008. The researcher then chose the corporate governance index (GOV) and shareholder return (ROSF) as the main explanatory variables and did a random effects regression analysis of privatised firm performance. Finally, the paper had two main findings: 1) The financial crisis had a more significant impact on the Czech Republic and Slovakia but had a more negligible influence on Poland. 2) During the post-privatisation era, GOV did not distinctly affect privatised company performance, while ROSF had a more substantial explanatory power for performance based on market development and policy...
Socioeconomic Development of Oklahoma from 1889 to 1907
Knapek, Jan ; Szobi, Pavel (advisor) ; Kýrová, Lucie (referee)
This bachelor thesis is focused on the development of Oklahoma in the years 1889-1907. In this period Oklahoma underwent a substantial transformation. Within less than 20 years, it changed from being a land of Indians, to a state owned by white settlers and businessmen. The goal of this thesis is to analyze the process of changing social structures on the American frontier which appeared at the turn of the century. Furthermore it takes a look at the particular effects of white settlement on the Five civilized tribes and Oklahoma's road to statehood.
A study on the impact of EU's eastward expansion on carbon emissions of Central and Eastern European member states-- taking imported waste resources as an example
Meng, Kai ; Semerák, Vilém (advisor) ; Akdogan, Idil (referee) ; Szobi, Pavel (referee)
The main purpose of this paper is to take the carbon emissions from import and export wastes as an example to study the impact of Central and Eastern European countries on their carbon emissions after joining the European Union. First of all, this paper introduces the theories and hypotheses related to trade and environment, and then clarifies the influence mechanism of EU eastward expansion on waste carbon emissions of CEE member states, including the impact of EU eastward expansion on waste trade flows in CEE member states and the effects of trade on carbon emissions. Based on this, it is concluded that: (1) joining the EU increases the carbon emissions of imported wastes from the new Central and Eastern European member states; (2) the industrial structure has a positive impact on environmental carbon emissions; (3) the number of labor force significantly promotes environmental carbon emissions, that is, the higher the number of labor force, the more carbon emissions; (4) the level of economic development has an inhibitory effect on carbon emissions, but not significantly. Finally, the full text is summarized and policy recommendations are put forward.
The impact of financial development on carbon dioxide emissions: Evidence from CEECs
Liu, Yuanhao ; Szobi, Pavel (advisor) ; Chondrogiannis, Ilias (referee) ; Čech, František (referee)
A sample of 13 CEE countries from 2000 to 2019 is used to investigate the total, direct, and indirect effects of financial development on carbon dioxide emissions. This study introduces four mediating effects of financial development on carbon dioxide emissions, i.e. economic growth, industrial structure, technology innovation, and the combined effect. To assess mediating effects and decompose total effect, GMM-SYS methods and bootstrap are employed. The empirical results entail that the total effect of financial development on CO2 emissions is inverted U-shaped. The mediating effects of economic growth, technology innovation, and the combined effect are enhancing mediating effects, with contributions to the total effect of 7.12%, 1.74%, and 3.29%, respectively. On the contrary, the mediating effect of industrial structure is a suppressing effect, with a 44.42% contribution rate. Therefore, industrial structure turns out to be the primary mediators through which financial development influences CO2 emissions in CEE countries. These findings give additional empirical evidence for the mediational model and Environment Kuznets Curve hypothesis from the perspective of financial development, and also provide new ideas for CEE policy makers to reach carbon neutrality objective by 2050.
Alternative media and political activism: Crooked Media's involvement in Georgia elections
Bártová, Patricie ; Szobi, Pavel (advisor) ; Pondělíček, Jiří (referee)
Alternative media are a diverse media category, containing several different types of media organizations that in various ways position themselves against mainstream media. This study aims to explore how should alternative media be defined. Specifically, it provides a comprehensive and complex framework to distinguish them not only from mainstream media, but also from extremist, propaganda or fake news outlets. In this context, the possibility of using alternative media as tools for political activism is also explored. To effectively illustrate the use of alternative media as an activist tool, this thesis uses the American media company Crooked Media as an example. To show the audience's attitudes to partisan content, an online survey was distributed to the followers of the company. Furthermore, a content analysis of podcast episodes released by the company were analyzed to provide an overview of the specifics of politically engaged content. Lastly, this study examines the specific results of the activist initiatives initiated by the company. The results show that alternative media are an useful tool to act in an activist manner, especially when the media organization establishes a connection with its audiences. However, while audiences may respond positively to the politically engaged nature of...
Environmental conflict; energy threat in Alaska
