The subject text of my translation is a report written by Jonas Lüth in 2020, titled Tschechien und seine Deutschen - was ist geblieben? It talks about the history of Germans in Czechia and how it reflects in the present. The goal of this work was to fulfil a made-up order and provide translation to the Municipal Museum of Ústí nad Labem, specifically for their website advertising an exhibition focused on the same topic. The scholarly commentary consists of translation analysis following Christiane Nord's model, translation method, shifts, and issues I have encountered during my study.
Human and Machine Translation of Children's Literature: Quality Assessment of Translations from German into Czech
Nováková, Anna ; Kloudová, Věra (advisor) ; Svoboda, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis deals with quality assessment of machine and human translation of children's and young people's literature from German into Czech. The subject of the thesis is the translation quality assessment of selected excerpts from the book Die unendliche Geschichte (1979) by German writer Michael Ende. The aim is to compare outputs from three machine translation systems (DeepL, Google Translate and CUBBITT) with one another and with translations by Milada Misárková (1987) and Eva Pátková (2001). The theoretical part deals first with the original text and its published Czech translations, then with the history and current state of machine translation, selected machine translation systems, the definition of translation quality and quality assessment of machine translation. The empirical part of the thesis consists of a translatological analysis of three excerpts and of a manual assessment of these passages provided by annotators from among the students of the Institute of Translation Studies FF UK.
Jiří Gruša in the role of a translator
Nitrová, Nella ; Svoboda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Winter, Astrid (referee)
The diploma thesis Jiří Gruša in his role as a translator introduces the life and work of Jiří Gruša, with special focus on his work as a translator on the language pair Czech - German. The thesis consists of a theoretical and an empirical part. The goal of this thesis is to give an idea of the extent of Gruša's work as a translator and to outline the reception of his translation work. The thesis also deals with specific aspects of self-translation - this is relevant, as the translation analysis has been conducted on selected chapters of a self-translation of Gruša's book Česko - Návod k použití (orig. Gebrauchsanweisung für Tschechien). The translation analysis is part of the empirical part of the thesis. The thesis further includes translation research of translation history and describes the concept of the Translator Studies discipline. Based on the conducted translation analysis, Gruša's self-translation is linked to the specific aspects of self-translation and to the context of the relevant time period. The results of the translation analysis are supported by data gained in an interview with M. Jeřábek, the co- translater of the analysed work. The ending of the empirical part consists of a bibliography of Gruša's translation work. Keywords Jiří Gruša, translation, translation analysis,...
Annotated translation: Die oper erwirbt mir die Märtirerkrone. Von der Leonore zum Fidelio - Beethovens Ringen um seine einzige Oper. In: Uwe Schweikert: Bald sind wir aber Gesang. Essays zu Oper, Musik und Literatur (2021).
Drobil, Ondřej ; Kloudová, Věra (advisor) ; Svoboda, Tomáš (referee)
The bachelor thesis contains a translation of the text "Die oper erwirbt mir die Märtirerkrone. Von der Leonore zum Fidelio - Beethovens Ringen um seine einzige Oper" from German into Czech. The text is part of the book "Bald sind wir aber Gesang. Essays zu Oper, Musik und Literatur" by German musicologist Uwe Schweikert from 2021. The author of the text critically analyses the genesis of Ludwig van Beethoven's opera Fidelio. The aim of the thesis was to produce a translation intended for a theatre programme for a hypothetical production of this opera. The translation itself is followed by a commentary, which includes a translation analysis based on Christiane Nord's model, an overview of the problems the author of the thesis solved in the translation process, a typology of the shifts that occurred in the translation, and a proposed method of translation.
Czech Wikipedia: A Translation Project
Bartošová, Andrea ; Svoboda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Mraček, David (referee)
The master's thesis "Czech Wikipedia: A Translation Project" examines the environment available for translators on Czech Wikipedia. It concentrates on the description of the rules and limitations regarding translation on Wikiepdia and its specifics. Furthermore, the actual process of translation is examined. Translation quality is also the subject to research. The theorethical bases for the thesis are mainly the manipulation theory (André Lefevere) and the field theory by Pierre Bourdieu will be used.
The quantitative change of target text volume compared with source text volume in German-Czech translations
Kučerová, Klára ; Svoboda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Winter, Astrid (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the investigation of the quantitative change of target text volume compared with source text volume in German-Czech translations. The aim of this thesis is to empirically test the hypothesis that when translating into German the target text volume increases and when translating into Czech the target text volume decreases. The theoretical part of this thesis first summarizes the findings concerning the phenomena that may influence the target text volume. These are translation universals, especially explicitation, as well as translation strategies. The next part of the thesis deals with the methods used in the empirical research. This part describes the source texts and explains the procedure used for calculating the coefficients of change of target text volume. In the empirical part, the source and target texts provided by the translation agency are described. The main part of this chapter consists of an analysis of the coefficients of change of target text volume in terms of the functional style of the source texts, the subject area of the source texts and the individual translators. The last part of this chapter focuses on a questionnaire survey among translation agencies. Its aim is to find out how the price of translation is calculated and what the respondents'...
Machine vision for robotic manufacturing systems
Svoboda, Tomáš ; Šubrt, Kamil (referee) ; Vetiška, Jan (advisor)
The first part of the thesis is a research of components and image processing in the application of machine vision in industry. The parameters required for quality image acquisition are described and the algorithms of programs for image evaluation in practice are selected. The practical part focuses on the description of a model task of Braille control on drug packaging. It includes the design procedure for component selection, parameter settings and the image processing program. The task is divided into two phases, where the first phase involves static testing without movement of the test samples and the second phase involves movement by a fan simulating motion on a conveyor.
Impact of the international trade agreements between EU and African countries
Svoboda, Tomáš ; Semerák, Vilém (advisor) ; Mošovský, Jan (referee)
The international trade policy between the EU and African developing countries covers the negotiations of various agreements aiming to promote mutual trade flows. The goal seems to both exploit the economic potential and support local development, including poverty or inequality reduction. To gain the maximum utilization of the benefits of trade, agreements need to be optimized and set toward the right degree of integration. Therefore, this paper provides the ex-post analysis of trade agreements concluded during the period 1948-2021 to evaluate their impact on mutual trade volume. The Fixed effects and the Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood estimation methods are used in combination with two sets of dummy variables. The results reveal the negative impact of the EU-African agreements across all depth levels in comparison to the general arrangements. Furthermore, the African continent shows a relative trade reduction among agreements containing too few and too many integration ratios emphasizing the necessity of finding the right balance. Disaggregating the effect into the African regions, West Africa seems to be the worst-performing area thus far. Finally, we have found strong evidence of trade diversion questioning the positive welfare of African nations. According to our findings, the renegotiation...
Toward Asymmetric Total Syntheses of Podophyllotoxin Derivatives
Svoboda, Tomáš ; Jahn, Ullrich (advisor) ; Starý, Ivo (referee)
Podophyllotoxin is a naturally occurring lignan with a wide range of biological activities, including anti- cancer and anti-viral properties. Total synthesis of podophyllotoxin has been a long-standing challenge in organic synthesis due to its complex and highly functionalized structure. In this work, we present our approach toward the total synthesis of podophyllotoxin using a fully stereoselective strategy. Our approach involves the enantioselective vinylation of 2-bromo-piperonal followed by a stereoselective conjugate addition reaction combined with the addition of methylene unit and a metathesis reaction, that provides starting material for another conjugate addition, which could lead to the target. The key step of our synthesis is the stereoselective conjugate addition of an organolithium to an α,β-unsaturated ester, which leads to the formation of a chiral quaternary center with high selectivity and metathesis that successfully joins parts into the desired cycle. Despite the success of our strategy in achieving the desired stereoselectivity, we encountered some challenges in the subsequent steps of the synthesis, which prevented us from completing the total synthesis of podophyllotoxin. However, our results demonstrate the potential of enantioselective vinylation and stereoselective...
