Menhard, Jan ; Suchánek, Drahomír (advisor) ; Malý, Jan (referee)
The main topic of this thesis is the analysis of St Andrews as a religious and cultural center of Scottish Christianity during the 15th century, when important institutions were formed in the city that influenced its further direction. Namely, it was the foundation of the university in 1413 and the subsequent elevation of the bishopric, which had been operating in the city since the 9th century, to an archbishopric (1472). The first chapter will briefly introduce the history of St. Andrews until the end of the 14th century, which is followed by an analysis of the origin, functioning and transformation of the university and church institutions and their mutual relationship during the period under study. The relationship between the papacy and the aforementioned institutions is also analyzed, as well as the immediate steps that led to the elevation of the bishopric to an archbishopric. The work also introduces important personalities of the researched period, such as bishops Henry Wardlaw, James Kennedy and the first archbishop Patrick Graham. The time frame of the researched period ends only in the middle of the 16th century with the onset of the Reformation, as it marked another real turning point in the history of Scotland.

Pecková, Tereza ; Suchánek, Drahomír (advisor) ; Zelenka, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis "Christianization of the British Isles: comparison of selected aspects of the Hiberno-Scottish and the Gregorian mission" deals with the period when the Christianization of the British Isles took place and focuses specifically on the history of the Hiberno-Scottish and Gregorian missions, their organization, key figures and customs. The main aim of this thesis is primarily to compare aspects of monasticism, church organization and liturgy of both missions and church organizations built by them, with which the author would like to determine the role of the Hiberno-Scottish mission in Christianization of the British Isles and define the uniqueness of Irish Christianity. The author also focuses on the mutual relations between the two missions and their clash, which culminated in 664 at the Whitby Synod. The complementary aim of the thesis is to analyse the mutual relations of the Hiberno-Scottish and Gregorian missions with secular power.

Šenk, Martin ; Suchánek, Drahomír (advisor) ; Drška, Václav (referee)
(in English): This diploma thesis focuses on the early Carolingian hagiographic production and its role in the Carolingians' rise to power. Two main issues are explored. Firstly, the influence of the hagiographic production on the rise of the Carolingians in the Frankish Empire and on the dynastic coup of 751 is examined. Secondly, the portrayal of the Carolingian expansion into Friesland and Bavaria in the hagiographical writings is analyzed and the legitimizing role that these writings may have played in the Carolingian politics is explored. After a terminological and methodological introduction, the political development of the Frankish Empire is summarized, with an emphasis on the rise of the Carolingians. This account is accompanied by an overview of the development of the Latin hagiographical tradition in the Frankish Empire, with particular reference to the facts that are further explored in the thesis, such as the transformation of the missionary ideal, the image of a noble saint, and the depiction of the cooperation between a saint and a ruler. In the third chapter, the historiographical debate on the Germanic royal sacrality and the phenomenon of noble saints is discussed in detail, and possible uses of its concepts are illustrated. These are then applied to the examples of the...
Political activity of Anselm of Canterbury
Kalina, Jan ; Suchánek, Drahomír (advisor) ; Drška, Václav (referee)
The thesis aims to describe Anselm's years as prior and abbot and his archiepiscopal career. Analyzing the years spent in the Norman monastery of Bec as a missionary and teacher in its school, the thesis notes the amount of knowledge and experiences which prepared Anselm for his archiepiscopal career. His intellectual qualities and theories are examined as well as some of his highly influential theological texts. Anselm also strove to spread the reforms of his teacher and mentor at Bec and his predecessor at Canterbury, Archbishop Lanfranc. Anselm's following archiepiscopal career spanned the reigns of two kings: William Rufus and Henry I. The study proves that the policies and attitudes of both rulers were quite different. Under the reign of William Rufus, Anselm tried to bring his ideal theoretical state of things into actuality, but the king resisted everything he attempted to do. With his death, Anselm's position changed rapidly and dramatically. Henry, on the other hand, excelled in the ability to work out a compromise. In the end, Anselm's archiepiscopal career concluded with cooperation between king and archbishop.
The position of an ordeal within the system of medieval justice and the reasons for its use
Brázdová, Lucie ; Suchánek, Drahomír (advisor) ; Drška, Václav (referee)
The main theme of this bachelor's work is the variety of potential explanations for the existence of ordeals (also known as a Judicium Dei) within the medieval justice system. First two chapters are dedicated to the definition of an ordeal as well as a short introduction into the historical context of an ordeal with an emphasis on Europe. The next part analyses various legal sources from the areas of Bohemia, England and Ireland and compares them. It shows both differences in kinds of ordeal which had been used and circumstances within which it can be found in legal texts. The last part demonstrates possible reasons behind the use of ordeals and tries to look at them from the point of view of a relation between them and an oath as another kind of medieval proof.
