Demand for gas: Evidence from the 2022 energy crisis
Stuchlík, Jan ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (advisor) ; Opatrný, Matěj (referee)
This thesis analyzes the effects of the 2022 energy crisis on changes in consump- tion patterns among Czech households, with the main focus on natural gas and other energy sources. We captured the effects using income and cross-price elas- ticity of expenditure shares of various goods. We calculated these elasticities from estimated parameters of a quadratic almost ideal demand system. The system parameters were estimated using the iterated feasible generalized non- linear least squares method on household-level data collected by PAQ Research. Demand for gas is income-elastic during the energy crisis, contrasting with other energy sources. Households made significant adjustments to their consumption of luxury goods and necessities in response to the high energy prices. The cross- price elasticity estimates show a decrease in expenditure shares of luxury goods and distant heat in relation to higher gas prices. Reduced healthcare and trans- port expenditure shares and increased solid fuels expenditure shares are related to higher electricity prices. In response to rising prices of necessities, households generally decrease expenditure shares of luxury goods. Households' reactions to the energy crisis are heterogeneous among socio-economic groups.
Who bears the costs of Brexit? A regional perspective
Stuchlík, Jakub ; Baxa, Jaromír (advisor) ; Bajgar, Matěj (referee)
0. 1 Abstract One of the decisive elements for the Brexit referendum was the great regional inequality in the UK, the biggest among the G7 economies. In this thesis, we study whether spatial inequality increased due to Brexit. We successfully pi- oneer a Synthetic Control Method using Lasso to estimate the Brexit impact. Our results are consistent on the national level with other scholars, achieving a mild 2% drop in the real output in 2019 and a stunning 14% fall in 2020. At the regional level, our results hint bigger losses for London and Scottish regions than for rural areas. Thus, in contradiction to other studies, we show that Brexit could decrease spatial inequality. The space of the city: Turnov at the time and the space
Stuchlík, Jaroslav ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Matějů, Martin (referee)
The subject matter of the thesis is defined as a cultural analysis of urban planning in a specific, lesser-size town - the town of Turnov. In its first part, the text focuses on the historical circumstances of the town2s origins. It concentrates on the most important periods from the point of view of the present day layout of the town2s centre: the early Middle Ages - a period of town building; the late Renaissance period and the emerging Baroque era; the 19th century; and finally, the text recapitulates 20th century developments. The text analyses the natural and geographic conditions at a location where a new town was being formed; it follows the specific process of settlement centralization, transformation in building technologies and onset of masonry buildings, the impact of repeated disastrous fires on the town square2s appearance, not leaving out the social and political context. We briefly introduce the present day layout of the town2s centre. The following section continues on with a specific demonstration of a clearly defined - and throughout time, a remarkably stable - three-dimensional spatial structure of the town2s centre. Subsequently, we analyze the effect of this structure on the specific layout of the town square from the architectural, transportation and sociocultural point of view. In the...
Economic Impact of Margaret Thatcher Revisited
Stuchlík, Jakub ; Baxa, Jaromír (advisor) ; Malovaná, Simona (referee)
Forty years after Margaret Thatcher became the first woman prime minister of the UK, her past actions and reforms remain highly polarizing and influential. Nevertheless, there is general agreement that her government was a game-changing one in many aspects. In this thesis we test whether and to what extent her deconstruction of the Post-war consensus affected the UK's economic performance. We apply the synthetic control method in order to observe the overall economic impact of Thatcher's policies. We find significant evidence that M. Thatcher exploited the output-inflation trade-off, and the decrease of inflation was very much at the costs of a significant increase of unemployment. We have calculated that in case of continuation of Post-war consensus policies the inflation would be on average approximately 2.2% higher and unemployment 2.8% lower in time period 1980-1990.

Different Social and Economic Strategies Taken in Spring 2020 in Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic and Their Medium-term Economic Consequences across the EU Countries
Stuchlík, Jan ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (advisor) ; Pintera, Jan (referee)
This thesis describes measures taken by the EU countries during spring 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and explains the effects of these measures on unemployment and economic growth using panel data regression analysis. We compare different approaches of the countries. Most of the restrictions caused unemployment to increase and economic growth to decrease. The effects on unemployment were often delayed for up to three months. Bans on in- door events, stay-at-home recommendations and closures of non-essential shops had the largest negative effects on employment in the EU. Closures of primary schools, closures of accommodation facilities and bans on indoor events had the biggest negative effects on GDP growth. The changes in economic growth were not directly proportional to the number of people infected by COVID-19. Countries that imposed wide restrictions were not proven to suffer from larger economic losses than countries introducing less strict interventions. 1
Media image of Notre Dame Cathedral fire in the Czech press
Stuchlík, Jan ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Zunová, Anna (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on the media image of the fire of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, which broke out on Monday, April 15, 2019 and lasted until the morning of the next day. The cause of the fire of the building, which celebrated 850 years since its creation and which was made famous by a novel by the French writer Victor Hugo, is still debated. The most probable cause is a short circuit in the circuit of the electrified bell located in the sanctuary tower, from which the fire spread to the rest of the roof. The final form of the future reconstructed cathedral is still not agreed, but French President Macron promised a final repair within 5 years. The aforementioned Paris fire brought with it a wave of media interest among the world and Czech media. This topic was relevant both to print and online media, as well as to television broadcasting and social networks. Most information about the fire of Notre Dame Cathedral resonated with social networks, while the smallest number of mentions was in television news. I came to my findings on the basis of a quantitative content analysis of selected media in my chosen period from April 15 to May 31, 2019, for which I used the Maximus application. I processed my findings into graphs, in which the data are clearer.
Characterization of hydrogenated silicon thin films and diode structures with integrated silicon and germanium nanoparticles
Stuchlík, Jiří ; Fajgar, R. ; Remeš, Zdeněk ; Kupčík, Jaroslav ; Stuchlíková, Hana
P-I-N diode structures based on the thin films of amorphous hydrogenated silicon (a-Si:H) deposited by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) technique were prepared with embedded Si and Ge nanoparticles. The Reactive Laser Ablation (RLA) of germanium target was used to cover the intrinsic a-Si:H layer by Ge NPs under a low pressure of the silane. The RLA was performed using focused excimer ArF laser beam under SiH4 background atmosphere. Reaction between ablated Ge NPs and SiH4 led to formation of Ge NPs covered by thin GeSi:H layer. The deposited NPs were covered and stabilized by a-Si:H layer by PECVD. Those two deposition processes were alternated repeatedly. Volt-ampere characteristics of final diode structures were measured in dark and under illumination as well as their electroluminescence spectra.
