Altruism in economics: Does purely unselfish altruism exists?
Tobiášová, Magdaléna ; Stroukal, Dominik (advisor) ; Chytilová, Helena (referee)
The thesis deals with altruism and searches for the existence of its purely unselfish form in economic theory by exploring the motives of altruism and works with the hypothesis that all altruistic behavior is motivated by altruists own utility. It focuses primarily on the economic theory of altruism and the blending of neoclassical economics, which deals with the rational behavior of economic subjects with the definition of altruism as irrational behavior. To develop the phenomenon of altruism from the point of view of economic theory, it also deals with altruism in the theory of games. This alternative approach describes altruism as reciprocal behavior and accesses it through relational goods.
The impact of standard of living on housing construction in regions in the Czech Republic
Sochorová, Aneta ; Stroukal, Dominik (advisor) ; Cingl, Lubomír (referee)
This thesis analyzes determinants of housing construction in regions in the Czech Republic. The main research question is the impact of standard of living on housing construction. The living standard is expressed in terms of net disposable income per capita and housing construction represents the number of housing starts. Other determinants included to the model estimation are rate of unemployment, housing price and number of mortgage. Analysis works with the panel data from period 2005- 2015 and all variables are used in the logarithmic form with one year lag. The model is estimated by random effects model. The assumption about positive impact of living standard on housing construction is not confirmed, because of the statistical insignificance of variable net disposable income. In case of other variables expected effects are confirm. The increases in rate of unemployment and housing prices have the negative impact on housing construction. And opposite the number of mortgage has positive impact on housing construction.
Ronald Coase by rád Bitcoin? Jak Blockchain snižuje náklady na transakci a mění koasijskou firmu
Kaid, Amira ; Stroukal, Dominik (advisor) ; Prokop, Jaromír (referee)
The rising popularity of blockchain technology otherwise known as the technology that underlies the Bitcoin protocol has been the subject of a lot of investigation and enthusiasm among financial organizations for its potentially revolutionary properties that will likely change how the economy works in the future. The blockchain is a decentralized open source ledger that records bitcoin transactions and is maintained by a distributed network of miners. Blockchain technology however has many applications beyond currency and can be applied in various areas including the firm organizational structure and law. This thesis examines how blockchain technology would lower the transaction costs involved in organizing the firm and how it would thus change the role of the firm. Coase (1937) in his article (The Nature of the Firm) explained that firms exist and continue to operate in a hierarchal manner because of the transaction costs that are involved in using the market mechanism. This paper also examines how the blockchain would lower the transaction costs of resolving disputes through carrying out market transactions that were mentioned by Coase (1960) in (The Problem of Social Cost). In order to achieve this aim Coases framework is used to theoretically model a future firm and legal system which are blockchain-based and that use bitcoin in their transactions. The results indicate that blockchain technology would reduce the transaction costs pointed out by Coase in such a way that it would cause the firm to become less hierarchal in nature and would allow it to adopt a more inclusive and distributed management system. Similarly in the case of law the transaction costs would fall making it easier for parties to resolve their disputes using the market mechanism instead of having to rely on a central authority.
Can we still call OPEC a cartel?
Ali, Dalia ; Stroukal, Dominik (advisor) ; Prokop, Jaromír (referee)
This paper raises the question whether OPEC actually acts like a cartel, given the fact that there were many controversy surrounding the organization due to its coordination failures, which resulted to an oil glut between 2014-2016. Consequently, the oil industry experienced a dramatic decline in oil prices due to the oil surplus. A comparison was made between OPEC's allocated quotas, and its actual oil production to investigate whether the members of the organization adhere to the assigned quota, to achieve highest possible prices.

Stroukal, Dominik ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
This work based on regression analysis and analysis using uses and gratification theory at the sample of 146 students opens the relationship between the use of online social networks and other media. Analysis comes up with results inconsistent with the theory of niche. The wider are the gratifications provided by online social networks and the wider are their gratification opportunities, the less they were used or not used more. It is also shown that there is a positive relationship between the number of dimension in which the internet social networks compete with other media and a usage of internet social networks. A major conclusion of this work is a negative relationship between the use of online social networks and all other media, including traditional media, with the exception of computer games. A negative relationship against expectations was found between online social networks and online news sites. In addition to these findings some interesting relationships between the use of online social networks and personal characteristics of their users were shown. There is no effect of age, gender or grade point average. Positive effect, however, was found for semester of studies and negative effect of having a job.

Does minimum wage increasing unemployment? Determinants of unemploymet in the Czech Republic
Frejlich, Petr ; Stroukal, Dominik (advisor) ; Brožová, Dagmar (referee)
The thesis analyzes an effect of raising the minimum wage and other variables on unemployment rate in the Czech Republic in 2006-2015. The empirical part is based on available time series, which were used to estimate models of unemployment for both women and men, including differently specified models and a model of overall unemployment. The time series used in regression models were adjusted for seasonality. Main hypothesis of this thesis was, that there is a positive correlation between raising the minimum wage and unemployment rate. Exogenous variables used in the models were chosen based on economic theory and existing literature. Results show, that there was no statistically significant relationship between the minimum wage and unemployment rate in the studied period. It was confirmed that there is a negative effect of GDP growth rate and inflation rate on unemployment rate, while unemployment benefits seem to have a positive effect
