The Song of Deborah in Its Historical and Literary Context

The essay makes inquiry into historical and literary context of the biblical Song of Deborah (Judges 5). By discussing some historical and archaeological arguments it is seemed to be proved that the main part of the song (2-13;19-31a) should be dated to the end of the second millenium. The reasons for this dating are in fact strongly different from the reasons that make W. F. Albright to date the song into the half of the 12 century B.C., although resulting datings are very similar. Beside the historical inquiry, the essay contains an example of literary and structural analysis of the song. By them is proved that the song as whole is a very elaborated poem, which has its internal logical structure and used many effective poetic techniques. The analysis of Deborah's song as a riposte form (G. P. Miller), is discussed in the end of the paper. The riposte was a form of retaliation against an insult circulated in the culture by rival group. Miller's analysis of Deborah's song as a riposte is seemed to be compatible to what has been reconstructed by archaeological excavations and therefore is accepted but it is claimed that it cannot be plausible for the song as a whole because the different signs and facts connected to different historical context are mentioned in verses 14-18.
