Václav Smyčka, Psychoanalysis before psychoanalysis? Late Enlightenment interest in the unconscious and trauma
Smyčka, Václav
This study deals with the understanding of trauma, neurosis and the unconscious in psychological narratives and case studies during the late Enlightenment in the Czech lands, focusing on the texts of the philosopher, writer and naturalist Gottfried Immanuel Wenzel and the writer Christian Heinrich Spiess. It shows that the interest of these authors in these phenomena did not so much stem from emerging Romanticism as from the empirical Enlightenment teaching on the soul, and often from surprisingly archaic theories such as the Aristotelian concept of the soul and memory and the mechanical notion of the functioning of nerve fibres, based on the principle of vibration. In particular, Wenzel combined his reflections on neuroses with his research into dreams, displaced thoughts and the principles behind dream imagery, thus anticipating some of the theses of psychoanalysis.
Time and its perception in Heinrich Böll's early short stories
Johnová, Kateřina ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Smyčka, Václav (referee)
Heinrich Böll's early prose was written in a contemporary context, which was to a large extent influenced by the concept of the historical presence, resp. by the end of the World War II as "Zero Hour" (Stunde Null), and they have numerous connections to this context. Even in their titles, there are often time motives. This bachelor thesis carries out a narratological analysis of the time arrangement of the narration of four short stories and focuses also on the perception and conception of time by their characters. It offers an answer to the questions of whether these concepts correspond more to an open or closed, linear or cyclical concept of time, or they displace the category of time; whether the time of the story is teleological (e.g. in the sense of 'destiny'), or its centre represents a shock that can be overcome ('crisis'), or whether the stories constitute a conflict of several such conceptions of time. The thesis monitors continuously the significance of the findings in relation to the non-literary perception of the historical time. It is based on the analysis of the short story Der Zug war pünktlich and then includes other short stories Damals in Odessa, Geschäft ist Geschäft, Nicht nur zur Weihnachtszeit.
The Motif of Communal Dining in Short Stories by Wolfgang Borchert and Peter Bichsel
Sanitráková, Simona ; Schneider, Thomas (advisor) ; Smyčka, Václav (referee)
This thesis deals with the motif of communal dining in selected short stories by Wolfgang Borchert and Peter Bichsel. Firstly, attention is drawn to the importance of communal dining through the prism of culture and religion. Then both authors are introduced, and the socio- historical context of their works is discussed. The selected short stories are precisely analyzed and interpreted with reference to the central motif of communal dining. The aim of the thesis is to present a previously unexplored representation of the great cultural topic in the small format of short stories.
How to write transcultural literary history?
Petrbok, Václav ; Smyčka, Václav ; Turek, Matouš ; Nekula, M. ; Heimböckel, D. ; Weinberg, M. ; Budňák, Jan ; Futtera, Ladislav ; Horňáček, L. ; Hon, J. K.
A publication How to write a transcultural literary history? contains selected contributions from the international conference held on 15th - 16th November 2018 by the Group for Research on Czech-German Intercultural Relations in the Bohemian Lands in the Institute of Czech Literature of the ASCR. The conference focused on the theoretical and methodological issues of writing the history of several literary cultures in different languages that coexisted in the Bohemian lands. It includes contributions concerning medieval literary production, the exposed “long” 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, as well as a number of problem areas (translation, cultural transfer, periodization, multilingualism, canon, regionalism, confessionalism) and theoretical and methodological approaches (postcolonial studies, transcultural theory, new historicism). In addition to the scholarly intent, this collection also seeks to stimulate further debates on the form of future literary-historical synthesis of literatures of Bohemian Lands across disciplines - Czech studies, German studies and other philologies, as well as cultural science or social and political history.
Transfer/Expulsion in the czech and german memory Cultures
Smyčka, Václav ; Weinberg, Manfred (advisor) ; Urválek, Aleš (referee) ; Schneider, Thomas (referee)
The thesis analyzes how the expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia is treated, interpreted and staged. It concentrates on two questions: what strategies do the authors use to recover the memory of the events and how do the different communities translate and share their memories? In the first part I sketch the development of the political contexts and discourses of expulsion in German and Czech memory culture on the basis of the model of ‚floating gap' by Jan Assman. In the second part, I present seven ‚strategies of commemoration' (Documenting, Interpreting, Investigating, Exhibiting of fragmentarized Memories, Swearing/staging of Trauma, Drawing of Genealogies, Reading in Landscapes), which the authors use in Literature (and Art) to represent the expulsion. The third part focuses finally on the problem of intercultural translation of memories, its shareability and the inner dialogism. The constant line of the analysis is the irreductibility of connection of memory and forgetting, which underline each other from the level of text to the level of memory politic.
The production of modernity and the time hiatus
Smyčka, Václav
The topic of this study is the emergence of the modern time regime during what is known as the Sattelzeit, i.e. the turn of the 18th and the 19th centuries in the Central European context. This transformation in temporality is even thematized historically at the theoretical level as a topos of cultural studies using several material examples summarized within three chronological profiles. While the first part of the study focuses on criticism of the various ways to describe this transformation in historical temporality, the second part is meant to demonstrate the specific application of the approach developed by Reinhard Koselleck, and in particular by Aleida Assmann and Niklas Luhmann. These describe the transformation of the time regime as an attempt by society to create its own temporal structures by narrowing down the present in order to facilitate the operationalization of experience and expectations. A clearer division of experience into lived and expected, old and new, facilitates the selection of memory and likewise the selective formation of future action scenarios. However, this imposition of a time hiatus upon an ever narrowing present may only produce modernity at the expense of the present being perceived as an unstable, ever-fugitive point, which paradoxically does not offer sufficient space for action. Hence the present in the modern time regime is only perceived as a rapidly passing transitional period and a crisis between a transparent past and a clearly illuminated future. Material cross-sections through Czech history, journalism, philosophy of history and literature from the 1790s, the Napoleonic Wars and the end of the pre-1848 period are presented by the study as three stages in this process of the temporalization of the modern time regime.
Social intercourse in the 18th century from the perspective of the conduct books
Hubáčková, Pavla ; Tinková, Daniela (advisor) ; Smyčka, Václav (referee)
Based on the 18th century German-written conduct books, this bachelor thesis studies strategies that were recommended to the then readers in pursuit of successful life; what was or was not acceptable, what parts of human behaviour they paid attention to, and how the individual authors' perspectives differed. The thesis centres around Karl Heinrich Seibt'sKlugheitslehre, examined by content analysis and compared to other literature. It also defines some of the concepts found in the conduct books, such as politeness or cleverness.
Optical Devices in Literature around the Year 1800
Smyčka, Václav
The study examines the relationship between literature and optical media (zograscopes, peepshows and magic laterns) in the late 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, in other words before the advent of photography and film. It is based on the theses of the media theorist Friedrich Kittler about the mutual overlap and delimitation between literary imagination, optical devices and anthropological ideas about human fantasy. It examines these relationships in the works of literature writen in Czech and German in the czech lands during this period, focusing in particular on texts by Christian Heinrich Spiess and his role played in them by the magic latern. An analysis of Spiess´ works and examples from other 19th - century Czech and Czech-German authorsshows, that from the end of the 18th century the magic latern became not only a frequent literyry motif, but also a model though which these authors understood the functioning of the human imagination as such. It appears that in Spiess´ thought the pathological state of phantasy is relatedto the normal functioneng of the imagination in the same way as a defect in the projection apparatus is related to its normal operation. However, the magic latern also functions in Spiess´ oevre as a poetological programme. Spiess sees his own writing as criticism of the work of the optical media, but at the same time develops their specific poeticism and attempts to compensate it for it. He also disseminates imagination through multiple intermedial references, ans it thus seemingly trans-medial relationships between literature and optical media well before the announcement of the end of the Gutenberg galaxy.
The Historical Imagination of Late Enlightenment.
Smyčka, Václav ; Činátl, Kamil (advisor) ; Maur, Eduard (referee) ; Tinková, Daniela (referee)
The dissertation deals with the transformations of historiography and perception of the historical time in the last third of 18th and at the beginning of the 19th centuries. The central questions it investigates are: How has the way of locating (Czech) society in time changed? How did representations of past fundamentally change between 1760s and 1820s, in the era of the so-called "Sattelzeit"? What is the relationship between these changes and the way in which history was represented? What impact did the changes of media, book markets, and culture of reading have in this time? What are the political and aesthetic consequences of these changes? The answer to these questions is found in five fundamental innovations of Enlightenment historiography. These innovations (understood according to Niklas Luhmann's system theory in order to reduce complexity) - fundamentally influenced the way in which late Enlightenment thinkers conceptualized the flow of historical time and the praxis of historiography. It is about the spread of cumulative concepts of knowledge in historia litteraria related to the growth of book markets, narrativisation of the historical experience (as a result of emergence of the newly incoming fictional genres of the historical novels),, philosophy of history as a new idealistic...
