Use of assessment scales for palliative patients
SLÁDKOVÁ, Michaela
The thesis deals with evaluating scales used in palliative patients. Palliative care has become a quickly developing field of study. To ensure individualized high-quality care for palliative patients, it is important for the nurse to be able to work according to the latest nursing procedures, which include, among other things, work with evaluating scales. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to find out whether nurses use specific evaluating scales in palliative patients and in what way these evaluating scales are of use to a nurse taking care of a palliative patient. The theoretical part of this thesis helps the reader get a basic preview of the issue of evaluating scales in palliative care. First, the history and division of palliative care are described. Further, the way of how palliative care works in the Czech Republic is outlined, what roles nurses hold in palliative care as well as what needs patients in palliative care have. The second chapter deals with tools used for evaluating the needs of palliative patients. The empirical part of this thesis was carried out via a qualitative research survey. Processing was done using a semi-structured interview with 10 nurses at chosen hospice facilities. First, the nurses´ identification was carried out. The interview itself consisted of 14 open-ended questions organised so that research questions would get answered. Data found out via survey was further processed using the open-coding ´pen-and-paper´ method and dividided into 4 logical categories further divided into sub-categories. A difference was found out between nurses from mobile hospice care and bed hospices in terms of the type of evaluating scales used. Evaluating scales serve nurses as an indicator of care and a quick review of problems in palliative patients. Further, information obtained via evaluating scales is consulted with doctors who may, thanks to this information, adjust their patient´s healthcare plan.
Comparsion of the approach in the prevention of pressure ulcers in the departments of surgical and non-surgical fields
SLÁDKOVÁ, Monika
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to map and subsequently compare the approach in the prevention of pressure ulcers in the departments of surgical and non-surgical fields of health facilities. Today, pressure ulcers are still among the most common chronic wounds, and patients at risk of developing them occur across all wards. The empirical part of the bachelor thesis has been processed by the method of qualitative research. The semi-structured interview technique was chosen for data collection. Interviews were conducted with nurses working in the departments of surgical and non-surgical fields in two South Bohemian hospitals. After processing the obtained data, the results of the research survey were divided into 3 categories, which were further divided into subcategories. The results of the thesis not only provided information on the differences in the approach in the prevention of pressure ulcers among departments of surgical and nonsurgical fields, but a fundamental difference also emerged in the comparison of departments of surgical fields between the monitored hospitals. The differences found concerned the assessment of the risk of pressure ulcers before surgery and the application of preventive measures to prevent pressure ulcers during the perioperative period. The results of the thesis have shown that nurses from the department of nonsurgical fields are much more actively educated in the issue of pressure ulcers, which is also relevant in the departments of surgical fields. Furthermore, it has been found that nurses from the department of surgical specialties, in contrast to nurses from the department of non-surgical specialties, have a deficit of knowledge in positioning patients with hemiparesis or hemiplegia. However, even these patients are commonly encountered by nurses in the operating wards and should therefore be able to provide them with quality care in the prevention of pressure ulcers. The achieved results of qualitative research can serve as an incentive to improve the management of pressure ulcer prevention in health care facilities and thus increase the quality of nursing care provided.

Family ideal and real: the change of the image of the family in selected works of Mexican American authors
Sládková, Magdalena ; Ulmanová, Hana (advisor) ; Kolinská, Klára (referee)
The fact that in the twenty-first century Latinos became the largest ethnic minority in the United States is inevitably mentioned in any recent publication on Latino population in the U.S. l People of Mexican origin form the largest percentage of the Latino group, 58%, according to the 2000 U.S. census.2 Mexican Americans have a long history of settling in the United States, nevertheless, their disadvantaged position in the American society is evident. They are usually located among the working-class, have low income, and also low educational attainment. Some social scientists, whose works will be mentioned in this thesis, believe that it is the Mexican American culture that prevents this population from success; others attribute it to discrimination and negative stereotypes of Mexicans that are perpetuated in the American society. In the 1960s and 1970s the Mexican American civil rights movement, known as the Chicano Movement, decided to end the discrimination and other social problems by supporting Mexican American nationalism. One of the ways to increase their national pride was to point at the Mexican American family as a source of strength and a symbol of unity of all Mexicans in the United States. The Chicano Movement asked artists to create works of art that would represent the Chicano family as an...
The Correlation between the Speed of the Source Speech and Simultaneous Interpreter's Performance.
Moravcová, Dagmar ; Čeňková, Ivana (advisor) ; Sládková, Miroslava (referee)
The purpose of the present thesis is to look into the correlation between the speed of the source speech and simultaneous interpreter's performance between Czech and French from the perspective of the French listeners of the source speeches in French, of two groups of interpreters (students and professionals) and of the listeners of the speeches interpreted into Czech. The thesis consists of the theoretical and the empirical part. The theoretical part outlines Daniel Gile's Effort Model and than focuses on the delivery rate of the source speech and on various theoretical approaches of different scholars, on the errors occured in the process of simultaneous interpreting, on intrepretation strategies and on the quality of interpretation. The empirical part describes the research method, the experiment itself and the results of the experiment which focuses both on the number of occurences of different interpretation stategies in relation to the source speech delivery rate and on the number of occurences of various error categories depending on the speed of the quasi-authentic source speeches. The empirical part examines the differences between the performance of the students and of the interpreters. Their performance is then assessed by the Czech listeners. Keywords simultaneous interpretation,...
Audio description of dilms for the visually impaired
Hostová, Ľudmila ; Čeňková, Ivana (advisor) ; Sládková, Miroslava (referee)
In this thesis its author presents the first theoretical study of audio description (AD) in the Czech Republic. The aim of this paper is to summarize current international knowledge of AD, explore the status quo in the Czech Republic, assess applicability of the international experience in the Czech environment and, finally, propase further steps to be taken in order to enhance AD practice and theoretical research in the Czech Republic. Audio description i s a form of translation where, to quote J oel Snyder' s pa per, visual is made verbal. As such, it plays an important role in today's society: to people with visual impairment AD conveys information that would otherwise be inaccessible. Audio description facilitates access to culture and, in a broader sense, helps integrate the visually impaired into the society. In addition, AD in some countries serves as a learning tool for non-native speakers and for students with learning difficulties. Given its integrative potential, it is highly desirable to promote audio description and ensure its professional quality. As of today, several major countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Germany have taken a clear structured approach to audio description. The model for development of AD is the United Kingdom, where a tenth of digital...
Semiotics of note-taking in consecutive interpreting
Hrušovská, Petra ; Nekvapil, Jiří (advisor) ; Sládková, Miroslava (referee)
The present thesis focuses on semiotic aspects of note-taking in consecutive interpreting, in particular with respect to the process of semiosis and factors influencing the interpreters' conception of their notes. Chapter 1 mentions the basic features of note-taking in order to trace its semiotic characteristics in the following parts of the thesis. In Chapter 2, the notes as a specific semiotic system are briefly discussed within the framework of the second Peircean trichotomy of signs (cases of iconicity, indexicality and symbolicity are demonstrated) and in terms of their function, productivity and spatial settings. After these general considerations, Chapter 3 introduces the main theoretical approaches to the technique of note-taking (principally those of the Geneva and Heidelberg schools) including the issues of the languages involved in interpreting or the nature of signs. As the accent is on the process of semiosis (apprehension of signs by interpreters, generating signs according to the meaning of the speech and searching for the motivation for the interpreters' concrete choices of signs and their form), the chapter lists some basic signs and methods well- tested by practitioners. The signs are also analysed in terms of their origin and possibilities of expansion (composition, derivation...
