Geochemical markers from foraminiferal tests as a tool for reconstruction of paleoceanological environments: a case study from the Miocene of the Central Paratethys

This thesis deals with the use of geochemical proxies on foraminifera for paleoceanographical, paleoecological and paleoenvironmental interpretations in the fossil epicontinental sea - the Central Paratethys during the Langhian. It discusses the used methodologies and approaches that were specially chosen to fit the problematic of the studied area such as the single test analysis of carbon and oxygen stable isotopes on foraminifera. Other geochemical methods were represented by Mg/Ca based paleothermomethry and by several organic geochemistry proxies on whole rock samples (n-alkane indices, δ13 Corg, and carbon ratios - TOC/TIC/TC). These were further combined with foraminiferal paleoecological data, which allowed identification of particular water masses in the studied region as well as the prevailing circulation patterns/regimes during the studied interval in the Paratethyan marine realm. Additionally, there were interpreted various regional paleoenvironmental and paleoecological consequences. The Paratethys had similar hydrography of surficial waters with the Mediterranean, conversely to the bottom waters that were different, probably of a regional origin with their own evolution during the studied time interval. Carbon and Oxygen Stable Isotope Ratio from Foraminiferal Tests as a Key to the Paleoenvironmental Interpretations in the Middle Miocene of the Carpathian Foredeep (Central Paratethys)

The (Lomnice) LOM-1 borehole records a nutrient-rich quiet environment of the outer shelf to upper bathyal in the Mid Badenian (sensu Hohenegger et al. (2014)) of the Carpathian Foredeep. The LOM-1 borehole is rich of a fossil content with a relatively good preservation. The studied section can be correlated with the interval from 14.6 Ma (the FO of Orbulina spp.) to 13.42 Ma (the LO of Sphenolithus heteromorphus) which agrees with the beginning of the "Middle Miocene Climate Transition". The foraminifera for the carbon and oxygen stable isotope analysis were picked from the fraction 0.063-2 mm. The suitability for the stable isotope analysis was carefully evaluated based on the inner wall preservation. The isotopic analysis was done for fifteen samples with total 373 tests analyzed. Each analysis was performed from exactly one test. The following foraminiferal genera from different paleobiotops were used for the isotope analysis: Globigerina bulloides; Orbulina universa, Praeorbulina glomerosa; Globigerinoides spp.; Uvigerina spp.; Heterolepa dutemplei; Cibicidoides spp.; Gyroidinoides spp. and Melonis pompilioides to document the isotopic signal for the superficial and bottom waters. Foraminifera like paleoecological and biostratigraphical markers

The thesis deals with classification of foraminifera and development of foraminifera systematics in time. It also provides an complex overview of foraminifera biology, which includes cell biology, feeding, growth and life cycle of foraminifera. Next chapter describes morphological characteristics of foraminiferal test as the most important feature for taxonomy in paleontology. The following part presents basic factors and aspects of ecology. Practical part describes micropaleontological analysis of borehole Hrušovany located in SE part of the Central Paratethys. The foraminiferal assemblage allowed correlation with the Early Badenian (Langhian) and reconstruct paleoenvironment in this part of basin.
