"But don't expect us to welcome them with a flag or a fanfare." Reemigration to normalized Czechoslovakia between 1968-1989
Simerová, Barbora ; Randák, Jan (advisor) ; Rychlík, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on certain aspects of re-emigration to Czechoslovakia in the years 1968-1989. Its main aim is to demonstrate how the returnees were treated after they had come back to the Czechoslovak territory. Based on the materials produced by the State Security Service which are available in the Archive of the Security Forces the thesis analyses the State Security Service's view of this group of people. Using the period press and the television and radio broadcasting it strives to uncover the media image of re-emigrants and the main purpose of their presentation in the media. Besides that, it presents the fates of four specific people who returned to Czechoslovakia at that time showing some aspects of their life after coming back home. This part proceeds from the narrations for Paměť národa [the Memory of the Nation] and from the documents that the State Security Service produced about them.

Plaček, Jan ; Šedivý, Ivan (advisor) ; Rychlík, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the reflection of the Polish armed forces by the Czechoslovak state authorities between 1918 and 1939. This is achieved by researching primary sources against the background of the development of Czechoslovak- Polish relations. The thesis is divided into three main chronological chapters. In each of them, the context of Czechoslovak-Polish relations or other contemporary realities is first presented, and afterwards the reflection on the Polish armed forces is also given.
The Withdrawal of Soviet Troops from Military Area Ralsko
Nohýnková, Karolína ; Randák, Jan (advisor) ; Rychlík, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the (now former) military area Ralsko and the impact of the Soviet army's stay on the subsequent regional development. It places it in the context of the withdrawal of the Soviet army from the territory of Czechoslovakia, however, at the same time it also focuses on its specifics. In thematically ordered chapters it deals with e.g. coping with the ecological impacts of their stay and the issue of the transformation from the military area to the civilian sphere and the associated difficulties with privatization or the search for new uses. Methodologically, the thesis is based on the research project of the Institute of Contemporary History of the CAS "Czech Society and the Soviet Army 1968-1991", implemented in 2017-2019, especially on its conception of displacement not only from a political, but also from a social point of view. Moreover, it deepens it by focusing on one particular area of the Soviet army's dislocation - it emphasises the local aspect. It also builds on the theses defended at Charles University, which map the history of the military area Ralsko and the Czechoslovak and Soviet army's operations there in the previous decades (1950-1968 and 1968-1989). The thesis is based mainly on contemporary documents from the...
The changes of Roman Catholic Church in the Příbram region in the period of normalization from the perspective of church policy of Czechoslovak Communist Party (KSČ)
Řapek, Vojtěch ; Rychlík, Jan (advisor) ; Šebek, Jaroslav (referee)
(anglicky) The diploma thesis is focused on the Roman Catholic Church and its changes in the period of normalization on the example of the Příbram district. After the partial political liberalization in 1968 there was the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops resulting in normalization of relations and re-restricting the activity of the Roman Catholic Church. Within the district, church politics was on the agenda of the district church secretaries subordinate to the higher officials of the church politics. Except for the official activity of the church connected with the phenomenon of political collaboration, there was also unofficial underground church, the activity of which has not been well mapped yet, though it performed many functions and replaced activities that were not allowed or tolerated by the communist regime. The Příbram district represented a specific administrative unit within Bohemia from a religious point of view. The important pilgrimage place Svatá Hora was one of the main church venues due to the influence of the interesting personalities operating here and the pilgrimages. The almost twenty-year period of normalization here offers many remarkable events, personalities and phenomena, culminating in the rise of the church at the end of the eighties.
Czechoslovak Tourism in Socialist Yugoslavia. Institutions, Imaginations and Reality.
Jelínek, Martin ; Čechurová, Jana (advisor) ; Rychlík, Jan (referee)
International tourism has become a common part of human life. This phenomenon, originating in the modernization of society in the 19th century, has undergone a complex and long development. From its initial stages, when it was reserved for high society, through the understanding of its economic potential for the modern state and economy, to the final massification of international tourism in the second half of the 20th century. In a bipolar world, the specifics of the development of international tourism are shown with respect to which side of the Iron Curtain this tourism is developing on. A special example is if the development takes place somewhere on the border of both blocks. Czechoslovak tourism heading to Yugoslavia is a good example of blending the Eastern approach to traveling abroad with a specific model of the Yugoslav perspective on the phenomenon of tourism. Czech and Slovak tourists have been regular guests since the 19th century, heading precisely to the countries that made up the Yugoslav state. The presented work deals with how the institutionalization of Czechoslovak tourism in socialist Yugoslavia developed and was anchored, i.e. which institutions and in what way they ensured tourism, how and with which institutions on the Yugoslav side they were forced to cooperate and how this...
Analysis of narratives commemorating 28th October in the public debate in the years 1990-1993
Vicherek, Jonáš ; Michela, Miroslav (advisor) ; Rychlík, Jan (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to explore how the czech-slovak society of the years 1990-1993 relates to the past. The study utilizes the concept of ideal-typical narratives by Tomáš Sniegoň and critical discourse analysis by Norman Fairclough. The goal is to examine the role of establishing the joint Czech and Slovak state in various narratives, based on the foundation day of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918, which is 28 October. The associated question is who represented which narrative and what they were trying to achieve. The principal source materials include records from the sessions of each chamber of parliaments and national full-size newspapers from both the Czech and Slovak Republics. Using these sources, I analyze both the political and social reception of 28 October. I examine various layers of interpretation attributed to this date, with a specific focus on the mutual relationship between Czech and Slovak society.
For the sobering up of the nation - state policy against alcoholism 1948-1962
Balogh, Branislav ; Randák, Jan (advisor) ; Rychlík, Jan (referee)
(in English): The thesis deals with the state policy against alcoholism in the period 1948-1962 with an overlap into the history of the first half of the 20th century, with an emphasis on Slovakia, but in the context of nationally adopted norms. In the first chapter, which is the core of the thesis, the author introduces the level of state policy, traces the emergence of Law No. 87/1948 Zb., as well as its application in practice. Recognizing that laws do not just come into being, he also brings the public debate prior to its adoption into focus. It introduces the reader to the cultural milieu since World War II and notes state measures in the truncated post-war democratic republic. It presents the basic continuity of the medical, health and moral narrative from the end of the war to 1962, when Law No. 120/1962 Zb. is adopted. Starting from nationwide sources, it uses the method of probing in the districts of Senec and Pezinok to show empirically the regional application of the norms. It traces the basic strategies of the actors and the course of the emergence of the new institution of anti-alcohol corps. It places their emergence in the broader context of state measures and presents the prehistory of this institution. It traces the possibilities of applying a totalitarian versus revisionist...

The Impact of Czech Social Democratic Party on the second Government of Václav Klaus and political situation 1996-98
Skalová, Irena ; Rychlík, Jan (advisor) ; Stehlík, Michal (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the influence of the Czech Social Democratic Party in opposition on the minority coalition government led by Václav Klaus in the years 1996-1998. The support from this party was crucial for the government and it was supposed to manifest itself during the vote of confidence but also the vote on government proposals. The aim of this thesis is to find out how the influence manifested itself, but also how it shaped itself during the election period, as there were changes in the parliamentary groups, which changed the ratio of votes between the coalition and the opposition. The thesis also presents the role of Miloš Zeman, which was also very important during this election period. Moreover, the thesis also focuses on government proposals, which were successfully enforced thanks to the votes of the Czech Social Democratic Party, but also tries to find out whether the party's electoral programme promises were carried out or not, which will be pointed out on several examples. Last but not least, the thesis deals with the overall political situation during this time period, which was accompanied by disagreements in the coalition but also by scandals that eventually led to the resignation of the government and the emergence of a semi-official government led by the Czech...
