The influence of the economic asymmetry of actors on the dispute duration in the World Trade Organization
Rudolf, Patrik ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Karlas, Jan (referee)
The dispute settlement mechanism (DSM) is one of the most important components of the World Trade Organization. This bachelor thesis tries to reveal the influence of economic asymmetry of dispute actors on one of the so far little examined aspects of DSM - dispute duration. While doing so, attention was paid only to the bilateral dimension of DSM. Relationship between economic asymmetry - approached as asymmetry in economic power on the one hand and economic similarity on the other - was analysed through the method of regression analysis. Its outputs revealed that growing power asymmetry, on the contrary to the assumption of one of the hypotheses, tends to substantially account for the prolongation of disputes. By contrast, the influence of economic similarity turned out to be statistically insignificant. The thesis offers a relatively new view on the issue of dispute settlement in the WTO. Its findings may stimulate further research and, at the same time, be employed outside the WTO framework.
