On Professional Text Translation

(in English): The work in this diploma contains the special syntactic structural features of Russian and Czech historical and political science texts. The author of the work takes as a theoretical starting point the principle that Russian scientific texts use more condensed forms of expression than Czech scientific texts, and uses evidence in this diploma to verify the truth of this principle. Quantitative research was carried out to test this theory via examination of Czech and Russian historical and political science texts in both original and translated forms. The original criteria for the choice of texts used was thematic closeness, time period of text creation and a minimum length of 5,000 words. This criteria was later expanded to 7,000 words for original texts and 9,000 words for original texts and their translations. In addition to this a translation analysis was carried out concerning condensation devices, expression dynamics and the implicitness and explicitness of the text. The contrastive analysis of applied condensation devices of Czech and Russian texts adheres to the classification framework of Czech linguist Milan Jelinek. The Russian literature in series "World Literature" of the Czech publishing house Odeon (between 1955-1970) and the translational analysis of Anna Nováková's translation of Youri Olesha's novel Jealousy

Tématem mé diplomové práce je ediční politika nakladatelství Odeon, a to se zaměřením na vydávání ruské literatury v edici Světová četba. Cílem této práce je doplnění a upřesnění některých informací o ediční praxi tohoto našeho nejvýznamnějšího nakladatelského domu předlistopadové éry v oblasti vydávání překladové literatury. Translatologický rozbor jednoho z děl poslouží jako ukázka úrovně překladů zařazených do této edice. Diplomová práce je tedy strukturována do dvou částí. V první části, která má historicko-empirický charakter, se zabývám rusistickou produkcí zmíněného nakladatelství v edici Světová četba v období let 1955-1970, které v souvislosti s uvolněním kulturní politiky v šedesátých letech u nás může být v oblasti překladové tvorby považováno za nejpřínosnější a stále do jisté míry inspirativní. Druhá část má charakter spíše kriticko-empirický a je věnována translatologické analýze románu Jurije Oleši Závist v překladu Anny Novákové, jejíž osobnost je také pojítkem obou částí diplomové práce. The postwar generation of translators: Small and Big History. Illustration issues on interviews with translators

During the research project "The situation of literary translation in Czech society after 1945", which was initiated by the Institute of Translation studies of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University and undertaken between 2008 and 2011, nearly thirty interviews were conducted with important Czech translators of the post-war generation. This thesis follows the cited research project. It is divided into three parts. The first part presents an introduction to the methods of oral history. The second part confronts objective historical facts with subjective memory - information obtained through the conducted interviews. The third part expands the corpus with two further sets of interviews. These are introduced by a short depiction of the presented narrators and followed by an editorial note. In the summary the paper points out and evaluates the results gained by the present research, including the newly collected material.

Annotated translation of an essay on modern Czech literature

The aim of this thesis was to outline some problematic issues of translating Květoslav Chvatík's essay "Romány Milana Kundery a krize lidské existence pozdní doby" (The Novels by Milan Kundera and the Crisis of Human Existence in Modern Times) from the essay collection "Melancholie a vzdor" (Melancholy and Resistence). From the lexical point of view we focused on conveying informal expressions and terms, which were often difficult to translate. In some cases we found ourselves in a situation when it was not possible to keep all the expressive values of the original and we had to opt for a more general word, in other cases we had to use more words in the target language to translate one word of the original in order to express the meaning accurately. From the syntactic point of view we can say that we tried to respect and follow the syntax of the original text in the translation, in so far as it sounds natural in the target language, in some cases the use of different syntactic structures was dictated by the nature of the target language. From the stylistic point of view we can say that this essay could be defined neither as publicistic style, nor scientific, nor popular-scientific style, which may be the closest. The bachelor thesis is divided into two parts. The translation of the chapters in Zelenkov's book The World's Religions: Past and Presen makes the first part up, the second one is represented by expert commentary of the translation, which consists of five sections - analysis of the original text, approach to translation,translation method, problems of translation and translation shifts taxonomy.

The aim of this Master Thesis is to present an annotated literary translation of two chapters of the novella Vstrecha from Maxim Osipov's book, Grech zhalovatsya. The first part of this Master Thesis contains a translation of selected chapters from the novella Vstrecha. The second part, a commentary on the translation, includes information about the author and his work, style classification, the role of translation, vocabulary, intertextuality, characterization of translation methods, strategy of solving translation problems and typology of translation shifts.

Anthology of Soviet Prison and Labour Camp Literature in Czech Renderings

The thesis focuses on contrastive analysis of Soviet prison and labour camp literature published in anthology Jen jeden osud. The Czech version of this compilation was translated in 2009. The main task is to explore the adequacy of employed methods and approaches in translation. The thesis consists of two parts. The first part is focused on detailed analysis of original anthology and its translation to Czech. It explores types of memoirs containing the Russian anthology Доднесь тяготеет (Dodnes tyagoteyet (2004)), its variability of literary genres and its time radius. Then it analyses, how these criteria are reflected in the Czech version of anthology. The second part is focused on contrastive analysis of two selected memoirs from Yekaterina Olitskaya На Колыме (Na Kolyme) and Yuriy Fidelgolts Беспредел (Bespredel). Analysis focuses mainly on different category of prisoners, i.e. division on political and criminal prisoners and different classes of criminal prisoners. The important part was dedicated to the analysis of the author's style and its reflection into the target language.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to provide an annotated translation part of book Oľga. Zapretnyj dnevnik into Czech language. The commentary consists of two parts. The first part contains a translation analysis based on the model of Christiane Nord, which within intertextual factors includes also a typology of translation problems on several levels. The next part deals with problems that occurred during the process of translation and their solutions using the model of V. N. Komissarov. The aim of this Master Thesis is to present annotated translation of the text from the historical documentary by trilogy author Vitalij Shentalinskij "Raby Svobody". In the commentary attention was paid not only to problems at various language levels, but also to cultural and the other influences. The theoretical part, which is based on Czech and Slovakian theoretical works of Jiri Levy and Anton Popovic, could also help to facilitate deeper understanding the role of the translator and alternative ways of how the translator can de- duce a solution to particular translation problems. Jungmann's translation of Paradise Lost

This thesis examines Josef Jungmann's translation of Milton's Paradise Lost. Josef Jungmann was one of the leading figures of the Czech National Revival and translated Milton's poem between the years 1800 and 1804. The thesis thoroughly describes the Czech cultural situation at the beginning of the 19th century, covers Jungmann's theoretical model of translation and presents Jungmann's motives for translation of Milton's epic poem. The paper also describes the aims Jungmann had with his translation and whether he has achieved them. Also described is the reception Jungmann's translation received after it was published and its significance for the Czech literature. Primarily, this thesis focuses on detailed translation analysis of how Jungmann's translation compares prosodically, lexically and stylistically to the original and the first Polish translation.
