Nord Stream 2: In accordance with the EU's Energy security strategy?
Jančík, Jan ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The diploma thesis is focused on the energy security of the European union, specifically on the import of natural gas. The dependence on the import of natural gas is one of the key questions for the energy security of the EU. One of the tools for dealing with this issue is diversification of the suppliers a searching for a new sources of energy to sustain the economical development of the EU. One of the goals of the EU' Energy security strategy is to lower its dependence on gas imports from Russia. In the lights of recent events, when the gas supply was disrupted a few times, because of the events on Ukraine, Russian aggression in the eastern part of Ukraine and annexation of the Crimea, EU is looking for a better alternative. The research is trying to find out what is the role of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which will bypass Ukraine and go straight from Russia to Germany and will have impact on other Central and Eastern European countries. The question is whether the project is viable vis-a-vis energy security framework metrics and whether there are better alternatives such as the Southern Gas Corridor or the possibility to import liquified natural gas LNG from elsewhere. Apart from the energy security framework the geopolitics is taken into an account and will try to explain the power...
The Art of (In)Accuracy: A Meta-Analysis of the European Values Think-Tank's Forecasts
Štěpánek, Matěj ; Kofroň, Jan (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
Probabilistic forecasts represent a potentially indispensable tool for policy advising, strategic planning, or provision of possible scenarios of future development. It is clear, however, that inaccurate forecasts can entail serious consequences. At best, unsuccessful forecasting attempts may discredit such potentially valuable method in the eyes of decision-making elites. At worst, wrong predictions may lead to the misallocation of scarce resources or to the unnecessary securitization. Nonetheless, probabilistic forecasts have seldom been used in the realm of the Czech security analyses, studies, or debates. Thus, the European Values Think- Tank's research project is a pioneering attempt to utilize the probabilistic forecasting in the Czech politico-security sphere. Due to the fact that the think-tank developed its probabilistic forecasts to help the Czech security elite with strategic planning, the thesis aims to verify the accuracy and predictive capabilities of the European Values. The broader goal is to bring, by the accuracy assessment, the rigor into the Czech probabilistic-forecasting debate. Additionally, the thesis also compares the predictive capabilities of the European Values with the alternative - foreign - forecasts, as well as with other means of accuracy verification. The results...

Melicharová, Eliška ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The thesis deals with the global information flows and its aim is to find factors which influence them. Firstly, the visibility of the country in international news is explored, i.e. which countries are dominantly represented in the international news. Secondly, the exposure of the country towards international news is observed, i.e how countries vary in the openness towards the international news. The thesis also seek to reveal factors which have an impact on the visibility of the country and on the exposure. The thesis consists of a recherche part with the theory of globalization and a quantitative analysis based on the dataset from 2014-2017. The thesis concludes that countries are represented unevenly with few dominant countries (the most dominant country is China, followed by USA and Ukraine) in the international news and that the most exposed countries have been found small developing countries (Saint Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, etc.) from South America. Regarding the factors of visibility of the country, the highest impact has the size of population, and also GNI and the presence of violent correlated. On the contrary, all factors impacting the exposure of the country were found statistically insignificant.
International environmental cooperation in the fields of ozone depletion and plastic pollution in the sea
Janečka, Michal ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The thesis examines the nature of the international environmental cooperation in the regime of the ozone depletion and plastic pollution is the sea. While the international community has been able to attain a strong protection framework within a several years and currently the ozone regime constitutes an example among environmental regimes, the plastic pollution regime as a present and increasingly threatening issue to the environment encounters with an inability to find an effective solution and the international cooperation fails. The aim of the work is to put forward the main differences between the regimes and provide an explanation of the different strength within the international environmental cooperation. For this purpose, the paper initially performs the analysis of the main international contracts based on the several indicators in both regimes. Subsequently, applying the factor in the form of the interest and support of the industry and public, it identifies main aspects possessing the ability to influence the negotiation process and the resulting cooperation. Concurrently, in order to attain the necessary findings, the empirical part is placed under the theoretical framework of the Putnam's two-level game. As the thesis concludes, the established factor-based variables lead to the...

Feminicidio as an alarming problem of Mexican society: Process tracing of two selected cases
Kunická, Tereza ; Plechanovová, Běla (advisor) ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (referee)
Gender violence in Mexico is a problem that affects its society on a long- term basis. Its most extreme form known as feminicide, that is a gender- based murder of women, appears with so much frequency that it can be considered a structural problem yet. Mexico is one of the countries with most cases in Latin America, however, insufficient and ineffective measures taken by the state facilitate their perpetration which is often immune from prosecution. This thesis aims to approximate the issue to the reader and explain the concept of feminicide in given context within its complexity. For that purpose, a process tracing analysis of two selected cases is done; starting from their perpetration to their sentencing by judicial instances. The sentences of both cases became very important milestones. The factors that contributed to the outcome are tracked and afterwards a comparison of tracked causal mechanisms is done. As it was already mentioned, the cases were not selected randomly. Not only are they important for their sentences, but moreover they took place in two Mexican states with traditionally high numbers of committed feminicides, that is in Chihuahua and Mexico State. The results of the analysis suggest that even though Mexico has signed the most important international conventions about women's...
Comparison of EU's and ASEAN's counterterrorism efforts
Massita, Natalia ; Bureš, Oldřich (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
In the past decade, the political world has seen a shift on the global institutions strategies on the fight against terrorism. The aftermath of the 9/11 launched an unprecedented fear over terrorist organizations and demanded immediate actions from global leaders. In this scenario, the cooperation among global institutions became necessary in order to formulate political strategies for counter-terrorism actions. Therefore, this research explores how the EU and ASEAN formulate their policies in the fight against terrorism with a main focus on the comparative analysis between these two organizations. The thesis will aim to analyze the legal and the organizational structure in order to understand the main gaps and the developments that EU and ASEAN acquired by their counter-terrorism measures. Structurally, first some historical background on terrorism and on the agenda of the institutions will be provided in order to give some basic knowledge on the matter. Second, the author will describe the efforts fulfilled by the counter-terrorism agenda and finally, a comparative analysis will be conducted for a broader understanding of the policies to fight terrorist groups.
Transformation of the British-American "Special Relationship". Since the Government of John Major until Theresa May
Kochová, Nicole ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The aim of the master thesis is to deal with the specific bond between the USA and the Great Britain - by Winston Churchill defined as a special relationship - which connects the both countries based on their common history, language and culture or on their common threat. The special bond then further leads and helps to close cooperation and support in between the USA and the Great Britain. The era the thesis is concerned with begins at the very end of the Cold War when the common enemy was defeated and it was claimed that the special relationship is supposed to vanish as well. It then ends with the term of David Cameron who was later succeeded by Theresa May. The work further focuses on the three significant British premiers - John Major, Tony Blair and David Cameron and the description of their attitude to the relationship with European Union and more importantly to the USA, as the references about the special relationship appear further in their speeches. The subject of my analysis are the speeches of individual statesmen and the fact how exactly they perceive the Great Britain in the international system. Whether the Great Britain should accept its role in the European Union or rather deepen its bond with the USA on the contrary.
Effects of the Brexit referendum on the Common Security and Defence policy
Schlecht, Niclas ; Kazharski, Aliaksei (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
in English The Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) epitomizes the EU's aspirations to be a key actor in global security. With the Brexit the CSDP looses its biggest military power and one of its major payers. This thesis assesses how the EU dealed with the Brexit referendum and how the CSDP developed. It provides evaluation of the CSDP- related policies and asses the degree to which new developments can be traced back to the Brexit referendum and how they are infected by domestic constituencies in the EU Member States. The thesis shows that the exit of the UK gave the CSDP new possibilities to develop, that were not fully used due to domestic constraints of EU Member States.
