Synthesis and sintering of zirconia based ceramics for biomedical applications
Jahodová, Daniela ; Novotná, Lenka (referee) ; Částková, Klára (advisor)
The present thesis focuses on the preparation of tetragonal zirconia doped with yttria oxide, ceric dioxide, and magnesium oxide. In its theoretical part the thesis covers the characteristics of doped ceramics, the possible methods of powders preparation and of their further processing. The experimental part describes the precipitation synthesis of zirconia in base environment and further processing for ceramics. Also studied were the influences of dopant and of the processing technique used on the phase composition and microstructure of the resulting ceramics. To describe the powder structure, the thermal, dilatometric, surface area, and x-ray analyses were performed; as well as both the scanning and transmission electron microscopy employed. Dry processed ceramics showed the average grain size of 87–94 nm and the relative density in the range of 84,0–99,3 %. In comparison, the ceramics produced of hydrothermally synthesised powders proved the average grain size of 75–85 nm and the relative density between 92,7-99,9 %. As the next step, samples were subjected to low-temperature degradation for the time of 5 and 15 hours. Samples consisting of pure tetragonal ZrO2 were resistant to 5 and 15 hours of low-temperature degradation at 180 °C.

Silicon substituted calcium phosphate based bioceramic scaffolds
Karkuszová, Karina ; Šťastná, Eva (referee) ; Novotná, Lenka (advisor)
The theoretical part of this bachelor thesis summarizes the current state of knowledge of bioceramic materials based on calcium, phosphorus and silicon. More specifically, it focuses on calcium phosphates, the demands placed on them, the porosity of 3D foams, and biological properties such as biodegradation and bioactivity. 3D bioceramic calcium phosphate foam doped with silicon appears to be a suitable material for use in biomedical applications. It is the silicon that plays a role in the development of healthy bone and the formation of new tissue. Silicon substitutions are important in the field of investigation because they improve the bioassay of phosphate calcium. In the experimental part, calcium phosphate powders were first prepared by the hydroxyapatite and silica fusion reaction. Selected powder contents were 0; 0.1; 1, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 wt.% SiO2. The samples were sintered at 1100 °C, 1200 °C and 1300 °C. The second part consisted in the preparation of 3D foams by direct penetration with polyurethane and the subsequent characteristics of phase composition, solubility and bioactivity. Bioceramic foams had a highly porous structure. For 42 days, sample behavior in Tris-HCl and simulated body fluid (SBF) was monitored. The results of the experiment have shown that the samples are bioactive and silicon substitution increases phosphate calcium solubility. Therefore, these materials are potentially useful for biomedical applications

Ceramic materials applied in medicine - challenges and opportunities
Vitásek, Ladislav ; Sláma, Martin (referee) ; Novotná, Lenka (advisor)
This thesis deals with ceramic materials applied in medicine, mainly in orthopaedics and dentistry. The first part is focused on requirements and current state of biomaterials in bone tissue engineering and their advantages and disadvantages. Composite materials, where ceramic material is one component at least, are mentioned in the next part. Dense ceramics based on alumina and toughened zirconia is described in the separate part. The main part of this thesis deals with porous ceramic materials based on calcium phosphates. There are also defined scaffolds requirements such as porosity, mechanical and biological properties and moreover processing methods. The experimental part of this thesis has been devoted to the preparation of bioactive porous ceramic material based on hydroxyapatite and silica with improved properties. Samples with different amount of silica in structure (6-21 wt%) were fabricated by polymer replica technique. Prepared scaffolds with structure similar to cancellous bone can be promising candidates for using in bone tissue engineering applications.

S cílem zjistit vliv procesu byly v této práci porovnány vzorky připravené pomocí metod: freeze-casting, izostatické lisování za studena, uniaxiální lisování a suspenzní odlévání.
Impact of macro channels on mechanical stability of bone scaffolds during indirect 3D printing
Vojníková, Michaela ; Novotná, Lenka (referee) ; Salamon, David (advisor)
Porous materials are currently subject to the great interest of tissue engineering. They provide unique properties such as bioactivity, biodegradability, osteoconductivity, and vascularization. Particularly, ceramic porous systems show appreciable potential in medical applications. However, there is a crucial problem with the porous scaffold on account of their bad mechanic properties and therefore they are presently used only at low-load locations. This thesis focuses on the preparation of the scaffolds made of hydroxyapatite by using the freeze-casting method where the indirect 3D printing was applied to get open channels with the size over 200 µm. It also compares the mechanical properties of the scaffolds with different internal structures and monitors how the implementation of different types of grids affects the resulting stability. The scaffolds were prepared with a different arrangement of macro-channel in the internal structure, but they had equal dimensions as common property. The 3D grid was implemented before freezing into the mold and afterward the grid was eliminated by sintering, leaving only a channel system with the size 540-600 µm in the final scaffold. The influence of the type of the 3D grid on the resulting mechanical stability of the scaffold was determined. Rotation of this grid does not have a significant effect on the result, while it only helps with cracking in the direction of the helix. The combination of these methods reports very good controllability with directed macro-channels in the resulting scaffold and therefore it is suitable for the preparation of the bone-implants with different structures.
