Human-like conversations with Digital Personas: Conversational strategies that support mutual understanding
Kunc, Benjamín ; Šipošová, Barbora (advisor) ; Nováková Schöffelová, Miroslava (referee)
Communication is a collaborative process, and as such requires the communicators to create common ground - the assumption that they mutually understand each other on a sufficient level (Clark, 1996). The AI-powered virtual agents capable of using natural language to communicate with humans have recently attracted the attention of both the general public and experts, as the progress enables humans to give virtual agents more complex tasks in which a conversation itself is a crucial part of a task, such as in education, healthcare or mental health. While the virtual agents are getting better at understanding natural language, their ability to fulfill complex independent tasks (conducting semi-structured interviews, tutoring, coaching, etc.) is bounded by the limitations of their communication skills, and thus they perform the best at rather short, domain-specific conversations (Drouin et al., 2022). The goals of this thesis were to 1) create an experimental framework designed for a brief (5min) social voice chat between humans and virtual agents that would allow to experimentally manipulate different conversational strategies; 2) propose the first set of conversational strategies for mutual understanding and suggest appropriate self-report and behavioral metrics to measure the impact of the...
Benefit of language skills training according to Elkonin for children's language skills
Šišková, Dorota ; Nováková Schöffelová, Miroslava (advisor) ; Málková, Gabriela (referee)
Phonemic awareness which will be discussed in the diploma thesis is considered to be one of the important predictors of future success in reading and writing. In the theoretical part, we define basic concepts, focus on predictors of reading and writing and the phonological deficit in child development. The research part is conceived as a quasi-experiment in which we monitor the impact of Trénink jazykových schopností dle D. B. Elkonin on the language skills of preschool children. Our goal of the thesis is to evaluate the effect of the Czech adaptation of the intervention program for children and to capture the changes as a result of the implementation of this intervention program. The research sample consists of an experimental group and a control group. Before and after completing the intervention, the children were tested and measured for their level of phonemic awareness (specifically, a test of isolation of the first and last sounds, synthesis of sounds). Children from the experimental group were also measured with a sentence repetition test. The results of the research investigation showed a positive effect of the subject intervention in the area of children's language development. Children who were weak in the area of their language development before the training showed significantly better...
Online discussion under news articles from the perspective of its constributors and the redaction
Nováková, Miroslava ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
Since the beginning of the new millenium, the internet and its contents have developed and grown at a swift speed. Contemporary internet and its image are largely shaped by users themselves. By using a also porducing the content they help to shape it and are becoming produsers. The most well-known and widely used online space where users can post and share their own content is social networks. Another highly spread exampe of user-generated content is online discussions. Online discussions are entirely user-generated and at the same time have a huge impact on them. If we combine these two platforms, we get a space where almost anyone can comment on anything and indirectly influence a huge mass of people, and from here whole societies. It is precisely because of the huge reach of social networks and the discussions on them, that the question of how to control or regulate them arises. This thesis deals with discussions under articles published by the profiles of the news websites Novinky.cz and ČT24 on the social network Facebook. Discussions are view from two perspectives, namely from the point of view of the editors and from the point of view of the contributors. Based on research interviews with social media administrators of the selcted media, the thesis desribes what approach to control and...
Inductive Tasks Focused on Internal Geological Processes in the Biology Education at the Lower Secondary School (ISCED 2)
Nováková, Miroslava ; Teodoridis, Vasilis (advisor) ; Svobodová, Silvie (referee)
The diploma thesis is devoted to inductive tasks in the teaching of biology education at the lower secondary school (ISCED 2) with a focus on internal geological processes. In the theoretical part, the inclusion of the teaching of geology in the framework of the curricular documents of the Czech Republic is elaborated, and it also contains a summary of the forms and methods of teaching often used in the teaching of natural history, including didactic principles. For the empirical part, the goal was defined to positively influence the students' attitude towards the teaching of geology through author-designed inductive tasks focused on endogenous geological events. As part of the first questionnaire survey, pupils' attitudes towards natural history and specifically towards geology and its subthematic units were ascertained. The students identified the lithosphere and plate tectonics as challenging and unpopular topics. Inductive tasks were therefore designed on these two topics from endogenous geology. The tasks are processed in the form of preparations for the lessons, including supporting didactic materials, author's solutions, etc. The tasks were verified in the classroom on a sample of two classes selected from the primary school, a total of 52 pupils. A subsequent questionnaire survey revealed a...
