When two do the same, it is not the same: cost of equity estimation techniques used by valuation experts
Kolouchová, Petra ; Novák, Jiří (advisor) ; Mejstřík, Michal (referee)
Cost of equity is crucial information that enters business valuation. Yet, even after decades of academic research, consensus has not been reached regarding the appropriate cost of equity estimation. The aim of our thesis is to investigate the cost of equity estimation in practice. In other words, we aim to provide data on the popularity of individual cost of equity models and evidence on what techniques are used for the estimation of parameters entering the models. For this purpose, we use a specifically developed program and obtain a unique dataset of cost of equity values, estimation methods and parameters used by valuation experts in the Czech Republic in the period between 1997 and 2009. Our findings suggest that the most popular model for cost of equity estimation is CAPM, which is followed by the heuristic build up model. In the case of CAPM, risk premiums for unsystematic risks are often applied. Such premiums depend to large extent on expert's own experience and as such are rather qualitative in nature. Overall, in most points of the analysis, our results are consistent with previous, survey-based research on the US and the Western European data.
Thirty years in the service of cultural heritage objects in light of statistical data

Child and parent in the arms of digital technology
Zemanová, Helena ; Mazáčová, Nataša (advisor) ; Novák, Jaroslav (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the issue of digital technologies in relation to toddler children, analysis of differences in education and approach of their parents. The theoretical part defines terms such as digital literacy, digital technology, parent, toddler and others, which is closely related to the topic, mentions their brief characteristics and evokes connections between them. It introduces the reader to the developmental specifics of the toddler's child and presents different styles of attitudes of parents and educators to the current nature of digital media and the subsequent impact on the chosen age group. Based on the comparison of used literature and deeper exploration of the topic, the thesis confirms the chosen hypothesis, which is the starting point for the practical task. The practical part is focused on application-didactic work, where we find a list of suitable recommendations, available programs and applications, which are a guide for parents and educators who are not fully oriented in the risks and consequences of using current digital technologies, especially the target group of children in the pre-stage. entering pre-school education.
Performative Aspects in the Works of the Novi Sad Neo-Avant-Garde in 1960's and 1970's
Novák, Jiří ; Mikušiak, Igor (advisor) ; Otčenášek, Jaroslav (referee)
(in English): This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of constitution and artistic initiative of the so-called Novi Sad Neo-avantgarde generation in the 1960s and 1970s and emphasizes the performativeness of their activities. Vojvodina, with its tradition of multiculturalism and its centre in Novi Sad, same as the international socio-political climate of the 1960s created an environment for the art and social expression of the new generation of artists who stood out against the prevailing modernist discourse in culture and the bureaucratization and institutionalization of cultural activities of that time. The most radical demands for the democratization of culture culminated between years 1968-1972 and came from the cultural and artistic circles in Novi Sad, which were formed mainly around the cultural centre "Tribina mladih" and the literary magazines "Polja" and Hungarian-language "Új Symposion". Based on primary and secondary sources, the thesis analyses and summarizes the basic research and perception of this period and the specifics of individual artistic expressions of this so-called "Other Line".
On the Utilization of Machine Learning in Asset Return Prediction on Limited Datasets
Petrásek, Lukáš ; Baruník, Jozef (advisor) ; Novák, Jiří (referee)
In this thesis, we conduct a comparative analysis of how various modern ma- chine learning techniques perform when employed to asset return prediction on a relatively small sample. We consider a broad selection of machine learn- ing methods, including e.g. elastic nets, random forests or recently highly popularized neural networks. We find that these methods fail to outperform a simple linear model containing only 5 factors and estimated via ordinary least squares. Our conclusion is that applications of machine learning in fi- nance should be conducted carefully, because the techniques may not actually be as powerful as one might think when they are applied under unfavorable circumstances. Basics on persistent homology
Novák, Jakub ; Šťovíček, Jan (advisor) ; Hrbek, Michal (referee)
Abstract:In this work, the reader is introduced to the theory of persistent ho- mology and its applications. In the first chapter we will show the basics of sim- plicial and singular homology and we will prove the basic relations, especially the independence of simplicial homological groups on the chosen △-complex and isomorphism between homological groups of homotopic spaces. In the second chapter, we explain the motivation behind persistent homology, describe its al- gebraic structure and how it can be visually represented. We describe and prove the corectness of the algorithm for its calculation. We then illustrate the theory on an example. 1
Anthracological perspective on vegetation history in Roztoky u Prahy
Prach, Martin ; Novák, Jan (advisor) ; Beneš, Jaromír (referee)
This thesis researches forest history and human impact on it in prehistory and early Middle Ages by means of soil charcoal analysis, i.e. pedoanthracology. It focuses on a site called "Roztocký háj" with long-term human settlement near Roztoky u Prahy in central Bohemia. Pedoanthracology brings information about past woody vegetation that is very local and without much anthropogenic influence. On the other hand, archeoanthracology focuses on charcoal originating from archeological excavations directly from human settlements. These charcoals are therefore formed by human behaviour and provide general view on woody vegetation in wider surroundings of the site. Comparing results of these two approaches in Roztoky is allowed by long-term archeological excavations. They provided previously analyzed and partially published charcoal dataset. Newly obtained pedoanthracological dataset brings finer spatial scale, allows to find out the effect of local conditions on the charcoal spectra and also allows identification of possible purposefully selected taxa in the archeoanthracological assemblage. Another part of this work describes present-day vegetation around the soil profiles and examines it's possible continuity with the past vegetation. 4 soil profiles provided quite species-rich (17 taxa) charcoal...
Programming tools for development of algorithms and programs at elementary school
Dümont, Jan ; Novák, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Vaňková, Petra (referee)
The bachelor thesis is centred on an educational area algorithm development and programming at basic schools. The main aim is an overview and a description of teaching methods and programmes which promote the development of student's computional thinking. The thesis contains an analysis of researches which describes the situation of teaching algorithm development and programming at basic schools in 2006-2007 and in 2013. The analysis was realized by Department of Information Technology and Education at Faculty of Education at Charles University. Next part is a definition of basic concepts relating to this topic and at the end there are two examples of worksheets prepared for concrete methods.
