East German uprising of 1953 from the US perspective
Šidelka, Alexandr ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Pondělíček, Jiří (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on the analysis of the United States of America's view of the East German uprising in 1953. The events take place in the early phase of the Cold War, in which the United States played a vital role as one of the two main world powers. The main content of this thesis is primarily the reaction of the American administration to the events in East Germany and the subsequent analysis of the strategy of psychological warfare. The most important element of this policy was the American food aid program for the East German population. At the beginning of the thesis, the reader is introduced to the historical context of the relationship between the United States and the GDR, and then briefly familiarized with the issue of the mentioned uprising. The thesis uses the available primary sources, which are historical newspaper articles, to depict the reaction of the American media at the time. In the last part of the thesis, it answers the research question of whether and how the East German uprising in 1953 influenced American foreign policy in Eastern Europe in the context of the ongoing Cold War. The work is mainly compilation in nature and is developed on the basis of available primary and secondary sources and literature.
Image of West-Berlin: From the search for its own identity to the commander of the front town, Willy Brandt
Novotná, Tereza ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Swider, Malgorzata (referee)
Title Image of West-Berlin: From the search for its own identity to the commander of the front town, Willy Brandt Abstract The post-war development of West Berlin was influenced by demographic and economic problems, but also by the fact that the city became a battlefield of the Cold War, where two political systems competed with each other. West Berlin undoubtedly had a symbolic value for the West and this fact provided the city with security guarantees. However, if West Berlin did not want to be satisfied with mere survival, it had to focus on an image policy that would make it a self-confident and attractive city. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the process of image building and at the same time try to interpret this development with the help of the concept of soft power. The hypothesis assumes that the main creator of the city's image was its mayor, Willy Brandt. Since the concept of image is not very methodically anchored in history as a field of study, the thesis combines find- ings from secondary literature from various fields and supplements them with Brandt's speeches, letters and articles from the newspaper Der Spiegel. The thesis concludes that the process of image building was already started during the war through the narrative of freedom, and Willy Brandt played an important role in it at...
The Europeanisation of EU Railway Policy Hungarian and Polish strategies for adopting the political pillar of the EU's Fourth Railway Package
Illés, Gergő Dávid ; Góra, Magdalena (advisor) ; Nigrin, Tomáš (referee)
The objective of this thesis is to examine the implementation strategies of the political pillar of the Fourth Railway Package in Hungary through the lens of Europeanisation. It aims to uncover the extent of domestic change caused by the adoption of a Europeanised policy. After the introduction, the thesis draws up the theoretical background, methodological framework, and the background of the Hungarian and Polish railway markets. The chapter containing research findings analyses Hungarian and Polish adaptation strategies from three different perspectives. First, an ideological mapping analyses the two countries' attitudes to the political pillar. Second, the mapping's findings are compared with politicians' speeches concerning the political pillar in the European and national parliaments. Finally, the analyses are compared with the voting behaviour of parties relating to the political pillar in the European and national parliaments. The final chapter provides the summary of findings, research limitations, gap in research and conclusions. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Solidarity Surcharge in Germany
Le, Le Phuong ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šmidrkal, Václav (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the solidarity surcharge in Germany. The surcharge was first introduced in 1991 in order to finance the costs of the German reunification and to bridge the gap between states of western and eastern Germany. The surcharge was originally intended to be temporary for one year only, however, due to higher fiscal costs the solidarity surcharge was reintroduced in 1995. It was compulsory for all taxpayers until the end of 2020. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to explain why the solidarity surcharge was abolished right at the beginning of 2021. To answer this question, two initial hypotheses have been defined. First, the states of eastern Germany have reached the same economic level as the western ones. In this part of the research, the thesis discusses mainly the financial strength of the states, which is demonstrated by the example of the equalisation payments. Second, the national economic situation of the Federal Republic of Germany made it possible to abolish the solidarity surcharge without negatively affecting public finances. To verify this theory, the German state budgets are examined and then confronted with the revenue from the solidarity surcharge. Furthermore, the thesis also covers the public debate on the introduction and subsequent abolition of the...
Postwar Expulsion of Germans from Liberec, 1945-1947
Záveský, Michal ; Konrád, Ota (advisor) ; Nigrin, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the issue of the post-war displacement of Germans from Liberec and its surroundings. In the introduction, the German history of the city is presented. It mainly focuses on the period of the Munich Agreement and the associated incorporation of the city into the German Empire. Furthermore, the work examines the events of the end of the Second World War and the liberation of Liberec by the Red Army. The next part describes the development and change of attitude regarding the issue of expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia. After that, the work deals with the process itself and the organization of the transfer of Germans from Liberec. First, the disorganized expulsion that began in Liberec immediately after the end of the war is examined. This phase was often accompanied by violent incidents and organizational difficulties. Then the Potsdam Conference is mentioned, which was perceived as an intermediate link to the preparation of organized transfers. These transfers began in January 1946 and thesis mainly examines their organization and process, which was not always without problems. This phase of expulsion was officially ended in November 1946, but the transports continued with an additional phase that ended in 1951. At the end of the work, the immediate...
Greta Thunberg, Fridays for Future and the German climate policy
Ondrušíková, Karolína ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kochnowski, Roman (referee)
The master thesis deals with the potential influence of Greta Thunberg and Fridays for Future on the development of discussions in the German Bundestag in 2018-2021. In August 2018, Greta Thunberg started protesting in front of the Swedish Parliament against the violation of the Paris Agreement. That was adopted at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris in 2015 by all parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, committing them to take significant action to keep global warming below 1.5 řC. Other protesters began to join Greta, and already in September 2018, the international student movement Fridays for Future was established, organizing a climate strike every Friday. Through the analysis of the protocols from the sessions of German Bundestag, the thesis aims to find out how the person of Greta Thunberg, together with the protests of the Fridays for Future movement, was reflected in the German Bundestag during the global climate strikes. Among other things, the thesis aims to answer the question of whether and, if applicable, how the form of discussions on this topic changed between 2018-2021, and whether the activities of Greta Thunberg and the Fridays for Future had an impact on the development and importance of climate policy in Germany. The thesis is based on the hypothesis...
Reflections by the media on the Postoloprty massacre from 1990
Hegerová, Lenka ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Dimitrov, Michal (referee)
The main topic of this bachelor thesis is the so-called Postoloprty massacre and its reflection by selected Czech media after 1990. The Postoloprty Massacre is one of the greatest post-war excesses committed by the Czechs against the expelled Germans. Until the fall of the communist regime in 1989, the case was a taboo, much like other crimes committed against Germans during the expulsion. Although this changed in historiography after 1990, especially thanks to the publications of Tomáš Staňek, the path to coming to terms with this tragic event took much longer in the region where the massacre took place. A memorial plaque to the victims, which had been requested by associations and individuals since 2003, was erected seven years later. The aim of my thesis is to use discursive analysis to find out how the media reported on the Postoloprty
Comparison of the liberalisation of the railway passenger transport market on the example of the Czech Republic and Austria
Zajíc, Marek ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Volf, Jaromír (referee)
The subject of this diploma thesis is a comparison of the liberalisation of passenger rail transport on the example of the Czech Republic and Austria. Based on the legislative framework of the European Union, which both countries have to follow not merely in the field of transport policy, the aim of the thesis is to compare the situation in the two neighbouring Central European countries. Regarding the research, literature and other sources, the thesis focuses on a comparative analysis of how the two countries, comparable in terms of size and population, approach liberalisation. In this thesis, I conclude that the liberalization of the EU passenger rail market process in the Czech Republic and Austria through railway packages is undertaken by different methods. Whilst in the Czech Republic the "vertical separation" is used, where the infrastructure manager and carrier are two different subjects, which leads to business competition objectivity, in Austria the infrastructure manager and the carrier remain in one holding arrangement in relation to the subsidiary companies. It is important to analyse both of the approaches continuously, especially with regard to the period of 2023-2033, which is to be the last transitional decade, followed by absolute liberalisation of the passenger rail market....
Renewable energy use at the municipal level in Germany
Řezníček, Jakub ; Lizcová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Nigrin, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis is about the Energiewende process (energy transformation from fossil and nuclear energy sources to renewable resources) and the use of renewable energy resources in German municipalities - how they obtain it and use the funds they get from the operation of renewable sources. The first part of the thesis deals with the description of the Energiewende process - what strategy the current german government of the SPD, Greens and FDP (2022) presented in the coalition agreement, what are the German emission targets and energy mix and describes some problems that accompany this process. The second part deals with the use of renewable resources directly in individual German municipalities. The work builds on the research question "How do German municipalities obtain and use renewable energy?" The used method is a case study, which compares three German municipalities from different federal states - Feldheim (Brandenburg), Wildpoldsried (Bavaria) and Sprakebüll (Schleswig - Holstein). They have built renewable energy resources (wind and solar power plants and biogas stations) on their territory, thanks to which they can now be 100% energy independent. The finances that municipalities derive from fees and from renewable energy trading are invested in local development. These villages...
