Free Software and Cooperation as a Course for Development of Czech Librarianship

The dissertation focuses on the use of free software in Czech libraries. Both real practice and librarians' attitudes to this type of software are analyzed. The main goal of the dissertation has been to evaluate the attitudes of Czech libraries to free software, to analyze its use in practice, to design information and communications strategy for free software project and to implement it using Evergreen as an example project. In order to achieve the goals, both qualitative and quantitative research methods have been used. These included a survey, web data gathering and analysis and also case studies. The devised and implemented information and communications strategy consists of eight main parts (setting up a local community, creating communication tools, organizing seminars, Czech localization, the creation of first common catalogues, making documentation publicly available, active involvement in the international community and establishing a legal entity to improve awareness about free software among librarians) which are complemented with a SWOT analysis evaluating the strategy implementation.
Methods of information retrieval from scientific databases aimed at chemistry

Diplomová práce pojednává o metodách vyhledávání v chemických databázích. Soustředí se na rešeršní strategie používané v chemii, věnuje se odlišnostem chemických informací a tudíž i vyhledávacích postupů. Součástí je i návrh typologie chemických informací. Předkládá obecné postupy pro vyhledávání zejména faktografických informací, na základě identifikace látky a také informací o reakcích. Tyto postupy jsou pak testovány v praktické části na databázích Chemical Abstracts (a související databáze v prostředí SciFinder Scholar), Beilstein (resp. Gmelin, v prostředí Crossfire Commander) a PubChem.
Citing scientific literature using an XML format

The dissertation focuses on the use of XML for citation purposes. First, a current situation in citation practice, deeply influenced by the development in electronic publishing, is described. Then selected projects aimed at making citation data machine understandable and ways to include citation data into XML formats are presented. Citation formats (both XML and other formats) are dealt with in detail. This part is followed by a brief introduction of citation managers as tools used to automate work with citation data. Typology of cited documents is also covered. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of citation practice in IUPAC color books is included. Based on partial findings recommended practices for the inclusion of citation data into XML formats were developed. The recommended practices are a set of seven principles which can be summed up as follows: use of UTF-8 encoding, low number of elements and attributes, maximum data structuring, use of controlled vocabularies, data hierarchy and use of links to make connections, use of existing document typology or creation of a new one, use of recursion while working with the data. An experimental format based on the recommended practices has been designed. Citation data from IUPAC color books are used to present the way how the format can be implemented in practice.

Digital Images Production and Quality Control

(EN) This dissertation provides a broad understanding of fundamental terminology and an inside view of the digitization workflow and quality control processes. The main foci are on quality assurance during and outside the digitization processes and identification of the most suitable format for access, long term preservation, rendering and reformatting issues. An analysis of selected digitization centers is also included. An application called DIFFER (Determinator of Image File Format propERties) and subsequently The Image Data Validator - DIFFER has been developed using results from previously conducted research. The application utilizes new methods and technologies to help accelerate the whole processing and quality control. The goal was to develop a quality control application for a select group of relevant still image file formats capable of performing identification, characterization, validation and visual/mathematical comparison integrated into an operational digital preservation framework. This application comes with a well-structured graphic user interface, which helps the end user to understand the relationships between various file format properties, detect visual and non visual errors and simplify decision-making. Polythematic structured subject heading system

The Master's thesis is focused on the Polythematic Structured Subject Heading System, an indexing language created at the State Technical Library and used for document indexing and retrieval both in this library and in other institutions. The objective of the thesis is to evaluate the history of the subject heading system and suggest ways how it can be further developed. First of all the history of the subject heading system is described, both in the context of indexing and classification of documents in the State Technical Library and trends in knowledge organization in general. Then the current situation of the system is analyzed both from the formal and factual point of view. Tools used for the maintenance and presentation of the system are highlighted. The thesis also includes the description of relevant processes and suggests ways how to optimize the processes. Updating, maintenance and marketing are especially emphasized. The possibilities to use modern information and communication technologies for the further development of the subject heading system are described in detail. Authority files, markup languages and on-line library catalogues are included in the analysis. A draft of a new development policy for the system and new maintenance and indexing rules are also part of the thesis.
