Cai, Qingyun ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
CHARLES UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism Qingyun Cai Sang Culture: A Pessimistic Subculture in The Chinese Cyberspace Master Thesis Prague 2022 Abstract Since the reform and opening-up, China's economy has maintained rapid growth. However, since 2008, economic growth has shown a slow trend, and Chinese society is entering a "new economic normal". As China is currently in a period of social transformation, there are problems such as excessive housing prices, a widening gap between the rich and the poor, increasingly severe class solidification, and an unsound social security system. Against such a social background, the Sang culture emerged in 2016, which is opposite to the positive energy ideology advocated by the Chinese mainstream culture. It has the characteristics of negativity, self-mockery, and depression, which the Chinese youth group has dramatically resonated with. Mainstream news media represented by the People's Daily generally regard Sang culture as a kind of youth spiritual opium and a problematic subculture. The popularity of any subculture has its deep-seated reasons. Therefore, this thesis will combine the methods of Critical Discourse Analysis and Qualitative Content Analysis to research the significance of Sang culture on the Chinese...

Making more space at the table: how The New Yorker portrays family dynamics in its audiovisual content
Novaes Buffa, Fernanda ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Géla, František (referee)
The purpose of this study is to generate a debate about the portrayal of immigrant families in The New Yorker documentaries. The general objective is to understand how visual framing and the use of mise-en-scène elements such as set design, lighting and space, play a crucial role in communicating the representations of immigrant families and influencing the viewer's perception towards this group. In this study, the method used is close textual analysis on shots where family dynamics unraveled in seven documentaries featured in The New Yorker: Ale Libre; Guanajuato Norte; Seasons; Sing Me a Lullaby; Team Meryland; The Prince of Luna Park; and Yves & Variation. Findings indicate that immigrant families are, mainly, shown: 1) indoors, during the day; 2) with high-key lighting; and 3) with positive, closed, and deep space settings. The camera distance that appeared the most is "medium close-up". The findings advance how immigrant families are framed through mise-en-scène. This study contributes to the understanding that the portrayal of immigrant families in documentaries is a result of not only economic, social, political, and cultural tendencies and shifts, but also of elaborated constructions through mise-en-scène elements in a frame. This study has implications for research on film studies,...

The thesis looks into 80 articles, covering a span of the last two years, from 2019 till 2021, by 4 local Urdu publications: Ummat, Express Urdu, Jang and NawaiWaqt and applies grounded theoretical methods to find how the march is portrayed in the media, the latter's perception of Western-style feminism and whether or not the coverage is influenced by religious nationalism and patriarchal values.
Challenges for alternative journalism in Indonesia: A case study of Project Multatuli
Tivany, Arzia Halida ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (referee)
From 1967 until 1998, Indonesia was under the New Order repressive regime where the media was heavily controlled by the state. After the reform, the tight control over media ended and media liberalization started, inciting media concentration, conglomeration, and commercialization. In this climate, alternative media in Indonesia has emerged to challenge the dominant narrative presented by mainstream media. Project Multatuli emerged in 2021 as the first membership-focused media in Indonesia, carrying the mission of the social movement, by introducing a new type of ethical and sustainable business model within the Indonesian market. The aim of this study is to investigate the challenges and strategies employed by Project Multatuli as well as to identify the main distinction compared to mainstream media outlets. Relying on 9 qualitative interviews and a focus group discussion consisting of 3 participants, Project Multatuli is found to fit the criteria of radical alternative media as well as public service media. Results show that challenges are structural, mostly due to the unprepared press infrastructure in the country and challenging market demography. Meanwhile, their strategies to overcome the challenges are what makes Project Multatuli different from mainstream media outlets. These include their...
