Fundamental frequency behaviour in Czech sonorous syllabic codas
Svatošová, Michaela ; Volín, Jan (advisor) ; Skarnitzl, Radek (referee)
It has been established that listeners perceive intonation only in certain parts of the fundamental frequency (F0) contour. Descriptions of melodic patterns are often based on F0 values in vowels. However, pitch can be controlled also in sonorants (nasals, approximants), which can be part of syllabic codas in Czech. The aim of this thesis was to compare syllables with a sonorous coda and without a coda, and to examine whether the F0 contours are more similar in the domain of the syllabic nucleus or rather in the domain of the syllabic rime. The material consisted of a two-hour collection of audiobook samples recorded by sixteen professional actors. The analysis used multiple methods - representing F0 con- tours by selected discrete points, modelling the whole F0 contour with Legendre polynomials, and functional principal component analysis (FPCA). The results indicated that the syllabic rime represents the domain relevant for the production of functional melodic patterns (melodemes) in Czech. F0 contours in syllabic rimes showed more similar values of span (across both types of sylla- bles) than F0 contours measured in syllabic nuclei. Their shapes were also more comparable when syllabic rimes were considered. In syllables with a sonorous coda, the relationship between the slope of the F0 contour...
Voicing of selected consonants in whispered Czech
Svatošová, Michaela ; Bořil, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šturm, Pavel (referee)
Czech is one of the languages in which the phonological contrast of voicing is primarily realized by the presence or absence of the fundamental frequency. In whisper, however, the vocal folds do not vibrate, therefore voicing is absent. Despite that, in certain situations people do communicate successfully using whispered speech. Research on a range of languages has shown that listeners are able to discriminate voicing pairs in whisper even in isolated words or syllables which have no meaning, that is, on the basis of acoustic cues alone. The aim of this thesis was to verify these findings for Czech and to gain a better understanding of the acoustic features that contribute to the intelligibility of whisper. I have analysed recordings of the voicing pairs of Czech plosives and fricatives embedded in modal and whispered nonsense words. Of the various parameters measured, voicing counterparts differed most prominently in duration, although to a lesser extent than in modal phonation, suggesting weaker pre- servation of an otherwise redundant feature. In addition, the perception test confirmed a very good recognition of phonological voicing in whisper, but with substantial variability between individual voicing pairs. Furthermore, the combi- nation of the acoustic and perceptual perspective provided an...
Czech Women's Lobby: case study presentation of agenda settings and goals
Svatošová, Michaela ; Kolářová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Štogrová Jedličková, Petra (referee)
The aim of my thesis is on the example of network organization Czech Women's Lobby (CWL), demonstrate and analyse major issues of contemporary Czech women's NGOs communicated via Facebook, and what is the reception to them from ranks of the Facebook community. On basis of these themes, it will be analyse the relationship between what CWL considers as burning topic and what is considered crucial by the Facebook community. The subject of study is the way of Facebook usage in promoting CWL's values and goals and targeted changes on political and social levels. The theoretical part presents and explains key concepts and terminology, such as cyberactivism, civil society and active engagement within cyberspace. The empirical part describes the methods of research and research data processing. The final part includes the quantitative analysis of Facebook posts followed by the qualitative analysis of chosen aspects of Facebook communication in relation to its use for activist purposes. The list of recommendations for effective Facebook communication is attached at the end of this work. Keywords: activism, cyberactivism, internet activitsm, Čzech Women's Lobby, Facebook, social network, new media, NNO
