Nowadays, contamination of underground and surface water by various pollutants is serious environmental problem. Phenol and phenolic compounds belong to the most common organic pollutants. Huge sources of contamination are industrial waste waters (from chemical, rubber, pharmaceutical, petrochemical and other industry), which are necessary to purify. Various techniques (oxidation, enzymatic purification, sorption, photocatalysis, or their combination) are used for water treatment. This study is focused on suitable technique for phenolic compounds removal from contaminated waters.

Wastewater from underground coal gasification (UCG) represents the potential source of contaminants. The UCG technology could be used in the un-mineable coal seams; hardly feasible by the modern classic mining technologies. Contaminated water arises during the gasification in the coal seam. The main group of pollutants in contaminated water from UCG are phenolic compounds. This study is focused on the decontamination of simulated as well as real contaminated waters by using sorption technique.

Phenols belong to the most common water pollutants in the industrial effluents thus contamination of ground waters is not so sporadic. The other source of phenols as contaminants used to be the application of the underground coal gasification technology (UCG). Title history and first cities gained the title are mentioned. An important criterion is the European and Czech legislation and how to select the winning cities. Attention is then paid to the statutory city of Plzen - European Capital of Culture for 2015 and to all the important aspects which are related to the title.
