The End of Faith in Burning Lights in England: The Transformation of Britain's Position on the Czech Mental Map in 1938
Kudrnová, Johana ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Váška, Jan (referee)
Western orientation of the interwar Czechoslovak foreign policy was based on a longterm effort to extricate the territory from a German sphere of influence and on the circumstances of its formation in 1918. A generally accepted narration about the friendship of France and Britain resulted in a deep mental shock after the messages about the signing of the Munich Agreement reached Czechoslovakia on the 30th of September 1938. Consequently, Czechoslovakia reoriented itself towards East. The aim of this diploma thesis is to capture this sudden turn through an analysis of the British image in selected Czech journals. Britain is in this regard examined as one of two most important interwar allies of Czechoslovakia. Discoursive analysis is applied to articles appearing in three periodicals, which represent three interwar ideological groups. Namely, the diploma thesis works with Lidove noviny, which were constructing an image influenced by the foreign policy orientation of the Castle, Venkov, which acted as a press agency of the most powerful political party, and Rude pravo, whose editorial line was comparatively noncomformist and thus represents a desirable alternative.
Foreign Cultural Policies of Global Cities: the Case of London and Paris in the years 2007-2016
Chocholová, Anna ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
This Master's thesis examines the foreign cultural policies of global cities, and incorporates case studies of London and Paris during the years 2007-2016. It answers the question why, in what manner and with what results do these two global cities form the cultural sphere of their respective foreign policies. Through the analysis of the British and French cultural diplomacy, the thesis determines whether the foreign cultural efforts of global cities differ from the ones of their states and share common features among themselves, or whether the influence of the national models, contrary to the global cities theories, still plays the key role. Furthermore, the question of if, to what extent and with what results do Paris and London participate in cooperation among cities is addressed in order to asses Saskia Sassen's hypothesis about the formation of transnational urban networks. The thesis concludes that even though the cultural spheres of London's and Paris's foreign policies share many similarities, the influence of state models is still evident. London, as opposed to Paris, just like the United Kingdom as opposed to France, makes use of modern methods, including marketing and city/state branding, and at the same time puts emphasis on economic profit. On the other hand, both cities use similar tools and...
Czech Development Cooperation Policy and the Private Sector: Key Discourses between 1995 and Today
Křížková, Eva ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
The private sector is an integral part of the global mainstream political development discourse. It appears in different contexts that define its roles in the field of development cooperation policy and therefore imply diverse political actions. The thesis analyses the Czech development discourse in connection with the private sector from 1995 until today. Based on the method of discourse analysis of the outputs of relevant development stakeholders the research identifies four different types of development discourse in relation to the private sector: "The private sector - a taboo", "We pay, we want Czech enterprises in development cooperation", "The private sector, the careless destructor", "The private sector, the darling of the development cooperation policy stakeholders." Out of the discourses identified, every type is typical for a specific time period as well as a specific set of stakeholders employing the discourse. Generally, until the Czech accession to the EU, the private sector does not seem to be an important element of the governmental development discourse since the theme is practically absent. This changes with the global economic crisis and even more notably after 2015 when generally all of the relevant development actors, including the traditionally very critical NGO sector,...
Local scale variability of new snow depth
Valdhansová, Klára ; Jeníček, Michal (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
Vegetation has an important effect on the catchment water balance, especially due to its influence on snow acccumulation and snow melt. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate how the canopy structure influences the new snow depth variability, while emphasis is put on the interception process. The snow depth data obtained by field measurements in the Ptačí brook experimental catchment in the Šumava Mountains were analysed using the Natural Neighbor interpolation method and regression analysis. The thesis is focused on evaluating the new snow depth variability in relation to differences in the canopy structure described by the Leaf Area Index. The measurements were carried out in four study plots covered with healthy forest, disturbed forest affeted by the bark beetle, open area and mixed area, which consists of all three types. The results showed, that average snow depth is by 45% lower in healthy forest and by 18% lower in disturbed forest compared to open area. The variability of new snow depth was largest in plot with mixed vegetation during maximum snow accumulation. On the contrary, the snow depth variability was lowest in open area. key words: interception, snow depth, Leaf Area Index, linear regression
Europeanization of French Regional Policy in 2007-2013
Poláková, Terezie ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis examines the Europeanization of regional policy of France in 2007-2013. Europeanization is analysed in the case of the Lisbon strategy approved in 2000 and then revised in 2005. Its goals divided into three thematic pillars affected the priorities of the regional policy of the European Union (EU). The thesis analyses whether the Lisbon goals influenced also the regional policy of France. Criteria of the misfit theory elaborated by Tanja A. Börzel are used to evaluate the impact of Europeanization on the French regional policy goals. First, the misfit between French and European regional policy goals in 2000-2006 is measured, then the scope of change between the two periods of the French regional policy is determined. Comparing French goals in 2000-2006 and 2007-2013, the misfit turns out to be intermediate meaning that the Lisbon goals were not a new element for the French regions. Furthermore the analysis shows that although the goals of the French regional policy were Europeanized, the scope of change was low. According to the theory, the fact could be explained as a lack of facilitating domestic actors in the French politic system. Regarding the three pillars of the Lisbon strategy, the biggest change was caused by the first one focused on renewables and energy efficiency. The...
Comparison of the election campaigns for the 2014 European Parliament elections by French political parties in terms of usage of political marketing tools
Pechová, Marika ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
The thesis focuses on election campaigns for the 2014 European Parliament elections by French political parties. The thesis deals with a rising popularity of the National Front party in France - nowadays an often discussed topic. The party is becoming increasingly popular and is attracting more and more voters. The biggest proof of the increasing popularity of FN is the party's victory in the 2014 European Parliament elections. There exist many explanations for this victory such as an unfavourable economic situation in France, the unpopularity of the socialist government lead by French president François Hollande, or anti-immigrant sentiments spreading throughout the whole of Europe. The thesis seeks to find another possible view on the phenomenon by comparing the FN election campaign with those of its main opponents, UMP and PS, and searching for certain differences. This comparison is based on usage of political marketing tools in the campaigns: election posters, advertising spots and profiles on the social network Facebook. The aim of the thesis is therefore to analyse how the French political parties used these tools in their campaigns, and also trying to find certain particularities in how they conducted the election campaigns. It is posited that if FN uses the tools in a different way and...
History in computer games: case study on "Valiant Hearts: The Great War"
Šindelář, Jakub ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
This thesis is a case study analysis of the visualization of history in computer games. The analyzed game, Valiant Hearts: The Great War, was published by the French company Ubisoft in 2014. The game is set in The First World War and was developed in cooperation with The Centenary Parnership Proram. The main goals of the thesis are following: First, determine if the vision of history in the game reflects the current paradigms of French historiography of The First World War. Second, to identify and to interpret particularities and deformations in the way the game recreates history. The first, theoretical chapter presents the phenomenon of The First World War in the French context, the study of computer games and the methodology of the analysis. For the analysis I have created my own methodology which combines various approaches used elsewhere. Chapter 2 contains the analysis, which is further structured into the analysis of the story from the perspective of the main characters and locations (2.1), analysis of the object inventory and the in game miniencyclopedia (2.2), and the analysis of game's style and form -the graphic and audio style, along with the issue of player freedom (2.3). For greater clarity, the parts of the game are referred to through it's subchapters. The results of the analysis...
Calculation of melt factors in a forest with different structure and in an open area in a small mountain catchment
Hotový, Ondřej ; Jeníček, Michal (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the development of snowpack in connection with effects of different physical-geographical factors, especially with the strong influence of vegetation on components of energy balance of the snowpack, including rainfall and runoff regimes of the area. The main aim of this thesis is to investigate the differences in snowmelt characteristics in an open area, under healthy coniferous forest and under forest infected by the bark beetle (Ips typographus). The snow depth and snow water equivalent data were obtained by field measurements at selected study sites in the experimental basin of Ptačí Brook in the Šumava Mountains during winter 2015/2016. The data were evaluated by simple conceptual method based on degree-day approach (temperature index), which examines the relationship between the snowmelt rate and air temperature. According to vegetation, degree-day factors were defined for each type of area as 1.71 mm řC-1 d-1 for healthy coniferous forest, 2.07 mm řC-1 d- 1 in forest infected by the bark beetle and 2.68 mm řC-1 d-1 in an open area. A simple model is a part of the thesis. It predicts the development of snow water equivalents using melt factors and it was used to evaluate the snow storages during snowmelt in study sites. Furthermore, it showed, that the most...
The Impact of Fukushima Accident on Energy Policy in France
Slepčan, Matej ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
This master thesis examines how the Fukushima accident has affected the French energy policy and the impact on the perception of nuclear energy by policymakers, the public and energy companies. Nuclear energy does comprises three-quarters of the total electricity production in the country and thus forms the backbone of the energy mix in France. The study uses comparative analysis as a main approach, to compare public discourse of state actors (in particular the President, the Ministry of Energy and Nuclear Safety Agency) and the French energy companies before and after the accident from March 11, 2011. At the beginning, the study refers on the position of nuclear energy in the world, historical development of nuclear energy in France and its importance for the energy security of the country. It also describes the Fukushima accident and its immediate consequences on nuclear energy worldwide. In a research section it presents a summary of France's energy policy before the Fukushima accident, in which emphasis was placed on maintaining a high share of nuclear energy in the energy mix of the country. In the next part of the research is described the French energy policy after the accident and subsequently the prospect of possible change of energy strategy of France.
Dieudonné as an example of new antisemitism in France
Bačová, Petra ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
This bachelor thesis is aimed at specific character of the new anti-Semitism in France and concrete elements that differ the new wave from the old one. This topic is very up to date in today's France because of significant increase of anti-Semitic crimes and growing numbres of jews emigrating to Israel. Three main differences which I explore in my thesis are : connection between new anti-Semitism and moslim immigrants, overlapping anti-Semitism with anti-Zionism and shift of anti-Semitism on the political spetrum. Second part of my thesis is study of artistic production of Dieudonné M'bala M'bala, french entertainer known for his controversial statements. In his political and artistic career I am trying to find aspects of new anti-Semitism mentioned in the first part.
