Language learning through adaptive graded readers
Marková, Daniela ; Cilibrasi, Luca (advisor) ; Fúsik, Ondřej (referee)
ENG The present thesis deals with graded readers and their contribution to L2 acquisition, more specifically their potential in connection with interactive fiction and adaptive learning mechanisms. For the purposes of this study, an adaptive graded reader was written in three levels of difficulty (based on vocabulary) and programmed as an interactive script in the form of a visual novel. Its effects were then tested on a group of Czech learners of English and on a control group. The experimental subjects could access the more demanding levels of the material by passing an assessment at the end of each chapter. The subjects in the control group, on the contrary, were given a non-interactive version of the reader with no checking for readiness. The results of the experiment revealed no statistically significant differences between the two groups, with both versions of the task leading to similar overall results. Despite this, the subjects in the experimental group reported greater satisfaction and considered the material more effective compared to the control group. The implications of the study suggest that while both versions of the reader were effective in vocabulary instruction, the adaptive graded reader was better received by the subjects and, therefore, could lead to greater motivation and...
The acquisition of prepositions through gaming
Marková, Daniela ; Cilibrasi, Luca (advisor) ; Gráf, Tomáš (referee)
The present study deals with the acquisition of the six most common prepositions in the English language through the employment of a video game specifically designed for this purpose. The thesis features a theoretical overview of the literature relevant to language acquisition, acquisition of function words (more specifically prepositions), game-based acquisition and instruction and its various aspects. The practical part contains a description of the game's design which endeavours to combine the relevant (S)LA theories together with the research on learning through gaming. The game consists of five separate tasks and the mechanics of which are then combined in the final task to elicit the correct responses of the subject. The language used in the game is adjusted for the subjects' level of proficiency, the game is fully voiced and offers a degree of customization. An experiment was conducted on 24 pupils from an elementary school, aged 12-13, who were assessed before and after playing the game. The results revealed that the game did advance the subjects' performance in prepositional structures containing the six most frequent English prepositions at the A1-A2 level of proficiency. Special attention was given to the performance on the preposition to compared to its particle counterpart to. Results...

Marková, Daniela ; Soukeník, Štěpán (advisor) ; Shavit, Anna (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to introduce the project that wants to improve children's lifestyle, especially diet and active movement. The introduction of the thesis gives a brief overview of the issue of childhood obesity and obesity in general and its impact on society in the future. The first part is based on theoretical information needed for the development of a comprehensive project proposal, such as marketing, fundraising and project management. The next chapter elaborates data of Czech children's lifestyle, their parents and other key actors that can affect this negative trend. Based on these data, the practical part of the thesis then comes up with a comprehensive project proposal from its financing, through its technical and anchoring the chapter on communication strategy, to how the project will reach the target audience and how to obtain the necessary finances and sponsors for its launch. In the end, all the information are reviewed and summarized, whether on the basis of all the data, the project has the potential to be launched.
