Role of trust in a democratic system
Sedláčková, Markéta ; Šubrt, Jiří (advisor) ; Marada, Radim (referee) ; Perottino, Michel (referee)
The need to understand the ongoing process of democratization has led to the revival of interest in the topics such as legitimacy of the democratic regimes, the creation of political culture and inevitably also in the question of the role of trust in these processes. These topics will be closely examined in this work. In the first - theoretical - section we introduce the evolution of the concept of trust, its various definitions and categorization. The concept of social capital, which is often linked to the to pic of trust, will be also addressed in this chapter. A special attention will be paid to the paradigm of so-called collective social capital (Putnam, Halpem, Fukuyama), which focuses on the relationship oftrust and democracy. The second part of the thesis maps theoretical work on trust and democracy, paying special attention to the arguments of culturalists and institucionalists. When we talk of the role that trust plays in a given democratic system, we use three basic channels of their relationship: legitimacy, social trust and trust in institutions. Legitimacy in a given govemment and its institutions - a form of systemic trust - is considered to be the key founding block of the democratic system. Based on divergent theories we continue the debate to what extent, and if at all, is legitimacy...
Extraordinary appeal
Marada, Radim ; Pelc, Vladimír (referee)
The thesis is devoted to the issues associated with an extraordinary appeal in criminal proceedings. An extraordinary appeal is an extraordinary remedial measure by which final decision of the court may be contested if the court decided in the second instance and the law permits it. The chapter seventeen of the Rules of Criminal Procedure consists of 18 sections which represent the main source of law to this extraordinary remedial measure. The thesis focuses on their analysis while taking the literature and case law into account. Therefore, the paper aims to point out the problematic aspects of corresponding sections and case law that determine the conditions by which an extraordinary appeal may be lodged and processed. Naturally, the paper also seeks to convey the ideas of solving the particular problems in which its readers have been introduced in the thesis. Brief comparsion to the rest of the remedial measures contained in the Rules of Criminal Procedure is also presented. The thesis consists of the introduction, nine individual chapters and the conclusion. The individual chapters are divided into subsections to make the content of the paper easier to be oriented within. The first chapter deals with the conditions of admissibility of an extraordinary appeal. The term decision on the merits is...

The influence of social group mentalities in the Czech Republic after 1989
Černý, Jiří ; Šubrt, Jiří (advisor) ; Tuček, Milan (referee) ; Marada, Radim (referee)
The goal of the dissertation thesis is to describe and analyze the influence of social group mentalities on the processes of post-communist transformation in the Czech Republic after 1989. Mentalities are described through their impact on attitudes, political and economical activities of different social groups (defined by socio-professional status, social class, and age). They are analyzed both in national and international context. The inquiry into determination of collective action has had its gradual progress in the sociology, so the dissertation outlines different approaches to social groups from this field of view. This outline led to the operationalization of the term "social group mentality". Mentalities can be treated as schemes of perception, thinking and acting, which are typical to a social group and relatively stable in time. Three structural dimensions of mentality were found, in which it is appropriate to make further inquiry - group identity, legitimization of leadership, and goal achievement. A qualitative survey, conducted in 2003-2004, gave answers about sources of creation of the social group mentalities. Each social group reinterprets common life experience of itself, of other social groups within society, and tries to legitimate its mentality as identical part of the society. Different...
