Czechoslovak-Turkish relations and the Image of Turkey in the journal Foreign Policy (1918-1938)
Lahučká, Karolína ; Malečková, Jitka (advisor) ; Kučera, Petr (referee)
This bachelor thesis is focused on development of Czechoslovak-Turkish relations in the inter-war period and the depiction of Turkey in the journal Foreign Policy, which was published by Ministry of Foreign Affaires of the Czechoslovak Republic between years 1920-1938. The first part of the thesis gives a summary of czechoslovak and turkish foreign policy. This chapter puts emphasis on events which had an influence on mutual relations and diplomatic representations. The second part of the thesis is an analysis of the view on Turkey in the journal Foreign Policy using methods of media analysis. The image of Turkey is divided into six blocks by their topic instead of chronological order. The analysis aims to show to what extent the view on Turkey and mutual relations was changed during the pursued period and to indicate whether the view was within the journal unanimous or not.
Turgut Özal's notion of the secularism and modernisation
Siegl, Erik ; Malečková, Jitka (advisor) ; Pirický, Gabriel (referee) ; Kropáček, Luboš (referee)
This dissertation examines the relationship between Islam, secularism and modernisation in the development of the Turkish republic with particular focus on the former Prime minister and President Turgut Özal (1927-1993). It analyses his policies and thinking and puts them in the broader political and historic context based on comparison with ideological attitudes of the Kemalism and Islamism and in the context of the overall development of the state's policy towards religion. Turgut Özal led the Turkey for one decade (1983-1993). His leadership is seen by many contemporary observers in Turkey and foreign scholars as the groundbreaking period with respect to the modernisation and changing role of the Islam in the society. During his rule, Özal significantly strenghtened the state support of the Islam and thus further shifted the meaning of state's policy of secularism. Detailed analysis of his book "Turkey in Europe, Europe in Turkey" shows that his own notion of modernisation and secularism was at odds with Mustafa Kemal's ideas and practical policies as well as with the islamist conceptions of Necmettin Erbakan. In the frame of modern Turkish political thinking Özal thus represents a separate stream rooted in the tradition of right wing conservativism. In his practical policy Özal implemented a...
Meeting of the East and the West in the Works of Ahmed Midhat and Rifa'a al-Tahtawi
Hartman, Tomáš ; Kučera, Petr (advisor) ; Malečková, Jitka (referee)
(in English): The main goal of my thesis is to find out the methods that were used by two middle-eastern authors, Rifāʿa aṭ-Ṭahṭāwī and Ahmet Midhat, to present the image of the West to their readers based on analysis of their works. In this thesis I am trying to reach this goal by topic analysis of their source works in the first place. In the second part of this work I included the description of life-fates of these two authors and circumstances under which they realized their journeys to Paris. This part of my thesis is based mainly on secondary literature, but is amended by quotations from source works. The main contribution of this work is based on the fact that this is first work of its kind which compiles works of these two authors. At the same time this work presents the image of the West from two different perspectives that differ a lot from each other and yet provide us with image of the same kind.
Development and physical stability of semisolid preparation with vegetabele extract
Malečková, Jitka ; Doležal, Pavel (advisor) ; Musilová, Marie (referee)
An investigation presented was concern in development of a practically usable topical gel having incorporated the plant extracts containing flavonoids and polyphenols to stabilize the formulation. The functional stability of this plant extract before and after stability tests were evaluated using the stable free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH ) assays. A theoretical part of the thesis briefly summarizes basics about semisolid formulations focused in gels, namely carbomers, and the use of the topical formulation possesing antioxidant activity. An evaluation of the physical stability by texture analysis, temperature cycling test, centrifugation, change in colour, vibration and photostability test as well as functional stability (DPPH ) is also included in this part. An experimental part describes the techniques of determination of the total amount of phenolic compounds, preparation of the final formulation and evaluation of the influence of titanium dioxide and concentration of carbomer on texture properties and pH. Excepting texture analysis, determination of the physical stability was mostly performed with a visual evaluation, functional stability was determined with DPPH methodology. The results show high antioxidant activity of the extract and ability to use it for topical...

Women and local power: processes of mobilization and female political pathways in Turkey
Drechselová, Lucie ; Malečková, Jitka (advisor) ; Dulong, Delphine (referee) ; Massicard, Elise (referee)
Women and local power: processes of mobilization and female political pathways in Turkey Type: Doctoral dissertation Author: Lucie Drechselová Institutions: Charles University and EHESS, Paris Year: 2018 Abstract This thesis focuses on the issue of women's under-representation in local politics in contemporary Turkey. The intermediary level of politics - party presence in municipalities - is studied with a double approach distinguishing among political parties (AKP, CHP, MHP, and the pro-Kurdish HDP & DBP) as well as among cities (Izmir, Trabzon and Diyarbakır). The Anglo-American body of literature in political sociology is put into dialogue with the French research in the fields of sociology of mobilization, of political elites and of institutions. Gendered perspective is transversal to the whole thesis. Field work was done in 2014, 2015 and 2016 in Izmir, Trabzon and Diyarbakır and took the form of non-participant observation and semi-directed interviews with two hundred female municipal councilors and women holding an intra- party office. Conceptually, seeing parties as heterogeneous entities allows us to study exchanges that take place within the party hierarchy. The place and role of women in the candidate selection processes questions the artificial separation between the "local" and the "national"....
