Possession in Czech Sign Language
Šestáková, Markéta ; Macurová, Alena (advisor) ; Škodová, Svatava (referee)
The thesis describes the ways of expressing possessiveness in Czech sign language, using a replication of the research described in Possessive and existential constructions in sign languages (Zeshan - Perniss, 2008), which is a part of a series formulating the first findings concerning the typology of sign languages. The first parts of the paper pay attention to the theoretical context - the category of possessiveness and the definition of some basic terms, the theory of universals, linguistic typology in general and the typology of sign languages. Then, the initial publication (Zeshan - Perniss, 2008) is presented - its theoretical background (attributive and predicative constructions, alienable and inalienable possession, event schemas), research design (questionnaire and elicitation materials) and the results the authors arrived at based on data from 28 sign languages. The research on possessiveness in Czech sign language was conducted in two phases: 1) an interview with a linguistically educated native speaker based on the questionnaire presented in the initial publication (Zeshan - Perniss, 2008), 2) elicitation of possessive constructions from twelve respondents (six pairs) who were given the elicitation tasks used in the initial research (Zeshan - Perniss, 2008). Based on the analysis of the...
One-handed and two-handed variants of signs in the Czech sign language
Polenská, Anna ; Richterová, Klára (advisor) ; Macurová, Alena (referee)
This bachelor thesis aims to cover the topic of one-handed variants of two-handed signs, the weak drop phenomenon in contemporary Czech Sign Language. Overview of the topic in academic literature on other sign languages (primarily on American Sign Language, Sign Language of the Netherlands, German Sign Language) is presented, including various factors that affect probability of weak drop realisation. Structural factors and their influence are studied with the use of excerption method from natural utterance in a Facebook group Zábava pro neslyšící v ČR. Analysis of this data shows that in Czech Sign Language signs with higher degree of symmetry undergo weak drop more often than signs with lower degree of symmetry, as is the case in most sign languages studied thus far. Alternate movement and contralateral place of articulation both significantly decrease probability of weak drop occurrence (similarly to American Sign Language). Hands contacting the body is favourable to weak drop, hands contacting each other have the opposite effect (as in Sign Language of the Netherlands). Weak Drop variants of signs with the passive hand in handshape B occur in fewer cases than anticipated. Key words: two-handed signs, one-handed signs, Weak Drop, Czech Sign Language, types of signs

This bachelor's thesis focuses on the name signs of chosen Czech politicians in the Czech sign language. The main objective is to describe and classify those signs and point out tendencies for their creation, for example, those related to political correctness. Name signs used among the Deaf are later compared to those used in the news program in Czech sign language (Zprávy v českém znakovém jazyce). The first part of the thesis covers proper nouns in the Czech language, heavily focusing on anthroponyms and their types which the author considers relevant for the thesis. The next chapter characterizes name signs and their categorization, which is based on the diploma thesis by Radka Faltínová (2005). The research part of the thesis describes and categorizes all the variations of the name signs collected from respondents and the news program in Czech sign language (Zprávy v českém znakovém jazyce). The author compares these two groups of name signs and comments on potential links between the frequency in which people watch the TV news in Czech sign language (Zprávy v českém znakovém jazyce) and used variants of the name signs. The thesis also provides an insight into the tendencies while creating a new name sign for public figures. Keywords Czech sign language, name signs, proper names, Czech politicians

Oppositeness in Czech and it's linguistic picture of the world
