Neology in Contemporary French Lexicon
Hánková, Anna ; Listíková, Renáta (advisor) ; Müllerová, Eva (referee)
The present thesis deals with the study of neology and neologisms in contemporary French. The theoretical part defines the concepts of neology and neologism, word-formation processes in general and specific word-formation processes classified as formal neology, semantic neology and borrowings. The empirical part describes the formation of the corpus created for the purposes of the thesis, which is based on texts selected form current French press (the daily broadsheet Le Monde and the weekly tabloid Voici). The core section of the thesis presents samples and analyses of individual word-formation processes which appeared in the author's corpus. The data are accompanied by a basic statistical analysis of the relative proportions of individual word-formation processes. The research shows that borrowings, especially those from English, represent the most frequent word-formation process in both newspapers. Borrowings constituted nearly a half of all identified neologisms (45%) in Voici and nearly one third of the neologisms (28%) in Le Monde. Buquoy aristocratic family, history and cultural legacy in Bohemia
Landová, Adéla ; Jančík, Jiří (advisor) ; Listíková, Renáta (referee)
1 Abstract The Buquoy aristocratic family is a branch of the Longueval family that has origins in current France. The Buquoys arrived in Lands of the Bohemian Crown during the thirty years' war when Charles Bonaventure was called in to fight Bohemian Protestants. Soon after, he received an estate in the Southern Bohemia from Ferdinand II where he and his descendants stayed nearly three and a half centuries. The Buquoys soon extended their opulent estates by Prague palaces and few regions in the North Bohemia. They contributed to advances in agriculture, glassblowing and in the area of social and scholar reforms. They were also engaged in politics and became important patrons of culture and arts. Nevertheless, the Buquoys suffered the same fate as other aristocratic families. In the beginning of the 19th century, they started losing their privileges and estates and, in 1945, they were expelled from Czechoslovakia based on Beneš decrees concerning retribution. The aim of this thesis is to point out the cultural legacy which Buquoys left behind in the current Czech Republic and to describe their overall contribution in particular areas. The thesis is divided into two chapters. The first chapter is dedicated to the general picture and to the history of aristocratic families in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown...
Analysis of English and French true friends (vrais amis) in a corpus of authentic text samples
Pípalová, Mariana ; Jančík, Jiří (advisor) ; Listíková, Renáta (referee)
This final project provides a parole analysis of vrais amis (true counterparts) in current French and English. To this end a specialized English-French translation corpus was assembled, composed of three subcorpora equal in length, namely Religious, Political and Fiction discourse, amounting altogether to approximately 60,000 words. With the help of the AntConc instrument, true friends employed in the corpus were generated, here conceived of as a register-specific phenomenon exclusively. Using the frequency criteria, a central set of 64 most frequent counterparts was delineated. These central counterparts, marked by (almost) identical frequencies, identical contexts and the same registers, were subjected to a multiaspectual analysis, scrutinizing the pronunciation, spelling, word classes, share of derivation, and frequency of types and tokens. Since English proved to be the borrowing language in all instances, the research also indirectly addressed the degree of their integration in the English words stock by reference to frequency bands. For most of the researched aspects, three zones of counterparts were identified, namely those exhibiting identity, close similarity and relative difference. As a result, employing the Theory of Centre and Periphery (Daneš 1966), we may arrange true counterparts...
