Wenzel Trnka von Krzowitz - Physician across the Habsburg Empire

Wenzel Trnka von Krzowitz (1739-1791), born in Tabor, was one of the most prominent figures of modern university medical education in Hungarian Kingdom, which was established by Gerhard van Swieten. He founded the first Hungarian medical faculty, and it was Václav Trnka who was personally selected as professor of anatomy. During his career as a professor, he wrote a considerable number of works that made him famous in medical circles throughout Europe. However, this renowned physician has fallen into obscurity over time and his personality is now almost unknown. The aim of this thesis is to describe the crucial aspects of his life utilizing fragment analysis and thus provide a closer understanding of his life circumstances. The second part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of his works in comparison with contemporary knowledge, but also by placing them in a contemporary context. This thesis concisely describes transformation of medical way of thinking in Eu- rope from hippocrato-galenic tradition to anatomo-pathological understanding of human body. It aims to trace conditions, that allowed rise of organic and later tissual pathology. Thesis also shows ideological shift in medical thinking concer- ning localization faculties of soul (shift from so called ventricular paradigm to localization faculties of soul into solid parts of brain). These ideas also affected reception of causes of mental illness. 1

This work aims to map the change of reception of suicide and ways in which body of self-murderer was treated in the end of 18. and in the begining of 19. century. Main focus is put on the change of attitude towards self-murderers's body with respect to new medical discourse. The work also aims to describe the transformation of state's attitude to voluntary death, modification of criminal law and introduction of new legislative, which changed perception of self-murderers's body and led to gradual decriminalization of suicide. 1

This works aims to map the development of the Löwenheim-Skolems the- orem from Ernst Schröder to Thoralf Skolem using original mathematical notation. It describes its consequence in the form of the Skolem paradox and its influence on set theory and associated issues concerning orders of logic. 1
