The Literati Purges and Historiography - the Case of Muosahwa (Literati Purges in the Year 1498)

This thesis primarily focuses on the Literati Purges in the year 1498 and the recording of history in the period preceding this incident. The first part describes the system of recording history during the early period of the Joseon Kingdom. It initially focuses on the compilation of historical works, then on the recording of contemporary records, and finally on the origin, compilation process, and preservation of the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty. The second part introduces the historical and social context of the events of the year 1498, with a focus on the coup and the rule of King Sejo, as well as the political conflicts of the reign of King Seongjong. The third part presents the course and interpretation of the events of the Literati Purges of 1498. This thesis aims to determine the role of recording history in the Literary Purges of the year 1498.
Yi Kwangsu in theory and praxis: "What is literature" and "The Heartless"

Subject of this thesis is groundbreaking essay "What is literature?" written in 1916 by korean author Yi Kwangsu. In the essay he describes korean literature and how much it is influenced by Chinese culture tradition dominating in Korea. The author is in a strict opposition and rejects everything "old". He shows timeless thoughts and importance of culturul detachment from China thanks to which Korea will be able to flourish and develope in a positive way. Also emphasizes writer's experiences, earnest of literature a primaly emotions he consideres to be the most important for literature. To which point Yi Kwangsu managed to convert theory to practise will be examinated on his novel The Heartless (Mujŏng) he wrote not se later after mentioned essay.
Film as a mirror of Korean history: Analysis of "new" narratives and political influences in contemporary Korean cinema

The diploma thesis deals with the interpretation of modern Korean history in Korean film production of the 21st century and its influence by the current domestic political and social situation. The analysis is focused on portraying three historically traumatic periods of Korean history - the Japanese occupation (1910-1945), the division of the Korean nation (1948-present) and the path to democratization of the country (70-80s of the 20th century). The aim of the thesis is to show how Korean films reflect given historical events and how they influence their interpretation in the 21st century. The first part of the thesis will be devoted to the definition of the relationship between history, film and politics with a specific focus on the Republic of Korea. The second part of the thesis will be focused on the three historical events already mentioned, it will introduce the reader to the historical background and elements of the controversy with an impact on the 21st century. The third part of the work focuses on the depiction of these events in Korean film production. Central Concepts in Ch'oe Namsŏn's Constructing Korean Identity

This master's thesis deals with the topic of two concepts by which Ch'oe Nam-sŏn, one of the key figures in Korean modern history, constructed Korean identity during the colonial period, namely his interpretation of the myth of Tangun, the legendary founder of Korean statehood, and the so-called Purham culture, which is to be basis for Asian culture in general. The text of the thesis is divided into two parts, the first part of which attempts to briefly contextualize Ch'oe Nam-sŏn's ideas and their connection to previous historians, especially Sin Chä-ho. The second, key part of the work will be the focus on representative texts written by Ch'oe Nam-sŏn during the Japanese occupation on the topic of Korean identity, and will notice shifts in interpretation with regard to the author's life vicissitudes, limitations and thought "maturation", will also focus on argumentation strategies, presentation of key ideas and conclusions.
Korean Ghost Stories (musŏun ijagi) in the Internet Era

Subject of thesis Korean Ghost Stories in the Internet Era is internet version of ghost stories/goedam (what I believe is a modern version of Yadam) on the corpus of published books Musoeun iyagi which are collections of such stories compiled by an author Song Junui through a web page thering. These ghost stories - goedams - are presented as real experiences of people who left their testimonies online. As such, they represent folklore in digital age in form of contemporary legends and personal experience legends. My aim is to discover, describe and understand changes in supernatural beliefs of Koreans through analysis of narratological categories of said corpus and comparing them to their predecessor. O T'aesŏk's Dramatic Texts in the Context of Modern Korean Literature

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyze three dramatic texts by O T'aesŏk from a literal perspective, specifically Jajŏngŏ (Bicycle), Pujayuch'in (Intimacy Between Father and Son) and Sim Ch'ŏnginŭn wae tu pŏn Indangsue momŭl tŏnjyŏssnŭnga (Why Did Sim Ch'ŏng Plunge Into the Sea Twice?). In the first part I focus on genesis and development of modern Korean drama and I compare it with the development of modern Korean literature. Then I describe three key themes of analysed dramatic texts in Korean literature. In the second part I analyse three dramatic texts using the case study method and put them into context of modern Korean literature. Faces of Korean postmodern literature

This work focuses on the short stories of three postmodern Korean authors: Pak Mingyu (b. 1968), Kim Yŏnsu (b. 1970), and Kim Chunghyŏk (b. 1971). The goal is to describe and analyze a representative sample of Korean short stories and, through the results of this analysis, to outline the direction of postmodern male short story creation. The theoretical part of the work examines the characteristics of Korean literature from the 1980s to the present day, Korean postmodern literature, and the formation of authors' literary personalities. In the practical part, the authors' selected short stories are analyzed using narratological categories, including tracing and describing the present leitmotifs. The final part summarizes the motives of individual authors and attempts to characterize Korean short story creation in the postmodern era. The Perception of the Korean way to independence in Czech literature and press until 1945

(in English): This bachelor thesis compares reflections on situation on the Korean Peninsula in works of Czech authors, as well as in texts created on Czech territory before 1945. The research also includes works that mention Korea even before the occupation by Japan to see the image of Korea before the occupation. Therefore, the research period begins in 1798 and ends with the year of the liberation of Korea 1945. The works of Czech authors and texts created on Czech territory are examined, mainly texts by travelers but also by legionnaires, Czech newspapers, and magazines, as well as novels using Korean themes or characters. Due to the scope of the work, not all mentions about Korea in newspapers and magazines published in the Czech Republic at that time are examined in detail. However, newspaper articles written by important academics who commented on the Korean situation are included, as well as summary for each period. The thesis focuses on the approval or disapproval of Japanese oppression and the portrayal of Koreans, as well as their frequent comparison with the Japanese. The work shows that at the beginning of the 20th century, criticism of the Japanese was milder, but with the subsequent occupation, there were more serious voices criticizing Japanese oppression. Typology of woman characters in Korean short stories of 1930s

This thesis focuses on the construction of female characters and their role in the context of 1930s short stories in Korean literature. In its analysis it attempts to take into account the ideological motivation of the authors and the specific approach of female writers which affects the portrayal of female characters. The first part introduces the political and historical context and its impact on the literary field. Established archetypes of female characters that have been appearing in older Korean literature as well as new female characters appearing with modernization are also made known. This work also shortly touches upon the literary work of the first female authors which significantly helped shift the role of female characters in Korean literature. In the second part selected short stories are analyzed. The analysis of female characters focuses on three productive groups and they're compared as such.
South Korean film of 1950s: a political perspective

This thesis deals with ideology and propaganda in the South Korean cinema of the 1950s. The theoretical part introduces the historical and ideological context of the era, the institutional and legislative framework including the National Security Act for the early Korean film industry and presents Korean cinema of the 1950s. The analytical part consists of an analysis of thirty-two movies from the era available on the YouTube channel of the Korean Film Archive. The goal of the analysis is to describe ideological manifestations, style of presentation of the state and its institutions, significant themes and motifs, the relationship between modernity and tradition, and depictions of foreigners and foreign languages in those movies.
