Facial Recognition in Intercultural Context: An Other-Ethnicity Effect Meta-Analysis

This thesis focuses on primarily on other-race effect as a particular psychological phenomenon intercepting face recognition process. In its theoretical part, it subsequently compiles main theoretical models and approaches that attempts to explain other-race effect. A peculiar focus is given to its developmental perspective. The empirical part consists of a meta- analytical study observing other-race effect in children. First it compiles previous meta-analyses concerning other-race effect and after that a proper meta-analysis is conducted. The current meta-analysis contains data from 22 articles (72 samples, n = 3784) and tests following hypotheses: (a) existence of other-race effect in children; (b) increase in bias following age; (c) indication of the critical period in face recognition; (d) relationship between other-race effect and belonging to an ethnic majority within population; (e) global trend in other-race effect over the time. The meta-analysis confirms size effect of middle range and fits results into the theoretical framework. Key words: other-race effect, face recognition, meta-analysis, children

Abstract This bachelor thesis concerns on 'the practice of being a pub regular' ("štamgastenství") as a particular cultural phenomenon and its role in contemporary pub culture. It summarises the evolution of pubs in the Czech context and explains a symbolical meaning of the place of pub in the construction of a Czech national identity. The thesis looks at pub as a public space from the perspective of the concept of the third place of an American urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg according to which for one's healthy functioning in society it is important to have got, beside of a home and a workplace, also the third place, a neutral ground, where one can experience informal public life. As claimed by this approach, the existence of the third places is crucial for an establishment of local community and cultivation of civil society. This thesis focuses on pub regulars as the group that makes the third place in the form of a pub alive and keeps it as such. The practical part of the thesis engages in a qualitative research using a method of ethnography on two selected Prague pubs in order to find out whether there is still a space for 'the practice of being a pub regular' in contemporary pub culture and how...

Title in English A Concept of Psychic System in the Social Systems Theory of Niklas Luhmann Annotation This thesis focuses in the form of a theoretical treatise on a secondary concept of Niklas Luhmann's social systems theory, a psychic system. Its main goal is to identify this concept in Luhmann's work and present its structured and comprehensive description. The thesis's secondary intention is then to present Luhmann's theory as itself and show an example of it's possible to work with it. In the first part, fundamental elements of the social systems theory are summarised and certain terms which will be used later in the thesis are explained. An analytical part of the thesis compiles mentions about psychic systems from an investigation of Luhmann's work and consequently structures and explains them in the context. In the last part of the thesis, then based on the previous analysis, a knowledge about psychic system is synthesised and psychic system together with social system are defined as meaning-constitutive systems and their similarities and differences are shown. Then, a possible model of a psychic system's internal structure is proposed and a significance of a consciousness for communication and subsequently for social systems is explained. Intrapersonal Communication and Its Role in Attitude Change

This bachelor's thesis focuses on intrapersonal communication and its significance in the process of self-persuasion. In the first topic of the thesis, an essential overview of the two close concepts, intrapersonal communication and inner speech, is presented. Then the thesis describes forms and functions of intrapersonal communication with the emphasis on inner dialogue and introduces Dialogical Self Theory by Hubert Hermans. The other thesis's topic deals with attitude change through the processes of persuasion and self-persuasion, presents examples of self-persuasion models and puts it into the context of intrapersonal communication. The thesis hypothesises that intrapersonal communication, especially in the form of inner dialogue, may function as an instrument of self-persuasion and therefore inner dialogical activity may manifest in susceptibility to persuasion. The research project proposal outlines a possible way to explore the relationship between the concepts by using research methods. The proposed quantitative research measures a correlation between Inner Dialogical Activity Scale (IDAS) by Piotr Oleś and Susceptibility-to-Persuasion-II scale (StP-II) and explores a possible influence of personality traits according to NEO-PI-R inventory.
