Remembering Communist-era Czechoslovakia: A Museum's Role in Facilitating History, Identities, and Memory Communities
Smith, Rose ; Králová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Mole, Richard Charles McKenzie (referee) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, post-Communist states had to interpret and portray their past in the context of post-Cold War politics. In the Czech Republic, reflections on the memory of communism have gone through peculiar waves that travel between indifference to anti-regime. The Museum of Communism serves as the only social institution that deals with such memory exclusively. Its goal is to create a simple and objective account of communism. However, with museums reinventing themselves as performative spaces that aim to empower their visitors, engage them emotionally and provide them an opportunity to (re)live a past they have not experienced first-hand, this thesis aims to identify what group identities the museum promotes, how it gives substance to them, and what kind of memory community it adheres to and fosters. Drawing on the rich literature on both memory studies and museum studies, this thesis examines the museum through lens of critical discourse analysis. It argues that the Museum of Communism ́s portrayal of the past maintains and participates in the pan-European discourse of the Czech Republic as a western nation kidnapped by the East and its victimhood status is defined by the global holocaust discourse.

Nutritional interventions as a prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers in geriatric clients living in social services facilities Introduction: Pressure ulcers are chronic wounds caused by pressure and friction. This is localized area of cell damage caused by a microcirculation disorder. Prevention is essential especially for immobile clients who are easily creating and developing these chronic wounds. Clinical practice shows that client positioning, use of anti-decubital aids and good nutritional support is necessary. It is important to increase the supply of individual nutrients, especially proteins, and monitor their sufficiency for treatment and prevention. The theoretical part of this diploma thesis was devoted to the etiopathogenesis, classification, prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers especially in terms of nutrition. The empirical part was focused on the examination of the nutritional status of clients with pressure ulcers (using the Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form questionnaire) and the concretization of the nutritional needs and the real balance of the clients with newly established pressure ulcers at the beginning and after three months of nursing. Objectives: The main objective of this thesis was to map, how many of institutionalized clients with pressure ulcers had sufficient...

Králová, Kateřina ; Bunc, Václav (advisor) ; Čechovská, Irena (referee)
Title Regime intervention to influence aerobic fitness level of middle age women Objective The aim of the work is to evaluate the effect of two-month physical intervention on the aerobic fitness level of middle-aged women and the influence of this intervention on the change of the body composition of individual study participants. Methods The tested group consisted of 5 middle-aged women with a sedentary occupation and no regular physical activity. The evaluation of their aerobic fitness and body composition was performed before the start of the intervention. These values were compared to the results of the same tests after the intervention. The values of VO2max measured before and after the intervention were used for the evaluation of aerobic fitness. The regression equation, based on the results of 2 km walking test (part of the UNIFITTEST 6-60), was used for the calculation of VO2max. The methods of bioimpedance (using the portable device Body stat 1500) and anthropometric measurement (body high, weight, circuits) were used for determination of body composition - mainly % FFM and% BF. The physical intervention itself was focused on walking for two months period. The form was used for monitoring of intervention individual exercise units. The group of middle-aged women performed the prescribed...
