Drinking water reservoir Nýrsko - influence of macrophytes on water quality
Hejzlar, Josef ; Hohausová, Eva ; Komárková, Jaroslava ; Kopáček, Jiří ; Peterka, Jiří ; Duras, J.
The importance of macrophytes in P cycling was studied in Nýrsko Reservoir, an oligotrophic water body in western Bohemia. A comparison of the external P loading with the P content in macrophytes of Nýrsko Reservoir in 2004 demonstrated that macrophytes can play a significant role in P-cycling also in deep, pelagial-dominated water bodies on condition that the external P loading is low and macrophytes have appropriate conditions for their growth (mainly small extent of water level fluctuation). Nýrsko Reservoir is an apparent example of situations from limnological textbooks when macrophytes function as a stabilizer of the aquatic ecosystem with an efficient zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton allowing suitable water quality for drinking water production.
Biochemical properties of soils of acidified mountain ecosystems
Šantrůčková, Hana ; Kopáček, Jiří ; Šimek, Miloslav ; Picek, T. ; Grund, M. ; Šetlík, J.
Results on the evaluation of chemical and biological properties of soil affected by long-term acidification are summarized. It is shown that mountain ecosystems differ in their ability to adsorb nutrients and in the rate of nutrient leaching.
Causes of long-term increase in concentrations of dissolved organic matter in Římov Reservoir
Hejzlar, Josef ; Kopáček, Jiří ; Porcal, Petr ; Haider, Z.
The concentration of dissolved organic matter (DOM) has increased in Rimov Reservoir since the late 1980s. Two main reasons were revealed for this increase: (i) an increase of DOM concentrations in the reservoir inflow that has been caused by more frequent summer high-runoff and DOM-rich events, and (ii) an increase in temperature and surface runoff volumes during winter months. The effects of decreasing atmospheric acid deposition and changes in farmland practices in the catchment also cannot be excluded as the other sources for the increase.
Eutrophication trends in the Vltava catchment area, Czech Republic
Hejzlar, Josef ; Vyhnálek, V. ; Kopáček, Jiří ; Procházková, Lidmila ; Komárková, Jaroslava
Long-term trends in phosphorus and phytoplankton concentrations were studied in Slapy Reserv.,as a representative of most reservoirs with medium flushing rate in the Czech Rep. Phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations increased from the 1950s to the middle 1990s as a consequence of an increase of phosphorus use and release into surface waters by human population. The decrease in phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations during the last decade can be interpreted as a beginning of a long-term recovery of Slapy Reservoir resulting from the decrease in P-loading into the surface waters by human population. Further possibility how to reduce phosphorus input to the surface waters is especially P removal from municipal waste waters. After higher reduction of phosphorus from waste waters, accomplishable especially by the entire elimination of P from detergents and by technologies of enhanced P removal in waste water treatment facilities, the trophic status of Slapy Reserv. lower than in the 1950s can be expected.
