For many diverse scientific questions, readers will find relevant studies in the present proceedings, which contains a total of 18 studies by authors from Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
Use of separate spectra records and interpretation possibilities of multispectral data in the context of protohistory of the middle Thaya region
Komoróczy, Balázs ; Vlach, Marek ; Zelíková, Michaela ; Sedláček, J.
The significant expansion of analytical and interpretive possibilities within remote sensing methods in archaeology over the last three decades brings especially the increasing availability of qualitatively adequate satellite multispectral data together with the development of multispectral sensors used on unmanned aerial vehicles. The results of multispectral imaging mediate an important analytical dimension for the identification and interpretation of signs of archaeological contexts in agricultural monocultures. As part of the prospecting activities of the Research Centre for Roman and Great Migration Period of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Brno, current goals also include exploiting the potential of this specific segment of remote sensing (in cooperation with the Institute of Landscape Planning at Mendel University in Brno) and with use of the wide array of prospection methods to broaden the information base of archaeological components, especially the protohistoric segment of the development of the middle and lower Thaya region.
Diseases in populations from the Roman period in terms of paleopathology.
Hlavenková, Lucia ; Smrčka, Václav (advisor) ; Vargová, Lenka (referee) ; Komoróczy, Balázs (referee)
Human osteological and dental remains are important for reconstruction of health and disease patterns in the past, preserving information in the form of abnormal changes on bones and teeth. These changes can reflect the spread of numerous diseases and the consequences they had on the health of various historical populations and groups. Systematic investigation performed within the present thesis explored pathologies in skeletal collections from six archaeological sites from across Slovakia and Hungary, dating to the 1st and 5th centuries AP. The total sample consisted of 300 individuals that were divided among three populations: the Germanic (GS), the Roman (RS) and the Sarmatian series (SS). Pathologies were assessed macroscopically and discussed on population and individual levels. Overall, sex, age and lesion distribution frequencies were used to determine a disease pattern characteristic for a corresponding group and then compared between the series. Conditions identified during the analysis were arranged into nine main categories. The analysis revealed that the health status of GS, RS and SS was generally good, though adults from GS and RS had experienced poorer dental health. The most common lesions observed in all series, particularly in GS, were due to degenerative and dental diseases,...
On the traces of barbarians – archaeological, historical, numismatic (Archaeology of Barbarians 2015)
Karwowski, M. ; Komoróczy, Balázs ; Trebsche, P.
The publication is the latest in the series of proceedings based on materials from Central European protohistoric conferences Archaeology of Barbarians. For the most part, the studies published here are a revised text of the lectures given at the 2015 conference Archaeology of Barbarian at the MAMUZ Museum Mistelbach in Lower Austria. The main theme of the conference was the Celts and Germanic tribes in the Middle Danube Region in archaeological and numismatic sources (2nd century BC - 2nd century AD), but space was also given to other phenomena of protohistoric development. Intensive discussions included, among other things, absolute and relative chronology of transitional horizons, issues of monetization and testimony of numismatic groups, military, economic and diplomatic interactions along the north-south axis of the region and other sub-themes. For most of these questions, readers will find relevant studies in the present proceedings, which contains a total of 18 studies by authors from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Germany.

Roman and Germanic brooches in Central Europe. (The archaeology of barbarians 2012)
Droberjar, E. ; Komoróczy, Balázs
The collected volume, which comprises papers from 49 authors, is thematically focused on brooches of the Iron Age, Roman Period and Migration Period. Brooches represent one of the most important categories of artefacts in protohistoric archaeology and their role in the acquisition of knowledge about barbarian communities is often irreplaceable. Celtic, Roman or Germanic brooches are remarkable, quantitatively representative and morphologically variegated finds. The wide spectrum of their information possibilities often goes beyond the potential of the other tangible evidence. They represent one of the buttresses of relative-chronological systems and contribute significantly to the detailed knowledge of many aspects of human cultures in the past, including the production procedures, trade and other forms of interactions, social differentiation or regional modifications of fashion trends. Most of the 33 chapters published in this volume were presented and vividly discussed in the VIII Protohistoric Conference, which was held in premises of the Palacký University in Olomouc in 2012. The authors strived to put together individual groups of new brooch finds from the barbarian territory in Central Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Poland) but also from peripheral parts of the Roman Empire, from provinces. In individual chapters they tried to outline several aspects of their documentation and classification and paid attention to analysis of selected categories. The authors publish in this volume new assemblages of finds and pay attention to various partial analyses of individual types or groups of brooches within a long period of time and with respect to current state of research.
Documentation, publication and interpretation of metal-detector finds as exemplified by Jobst type F4 brooches
Komoróczy, Balázs ; Vlach, Marek ; Zelíková, Michaela
Brooches represent a category of material evidence which in the past 25 years often became object of a very intensive metal detecting. In the Czech Republic, the number of amateurs who presently carry out this activity is much higher than the number of professional archaeologists. Archaeological science cannot omit the knowledge resulting from amateur metal-detecting finds, regardless of our personal opinion in this matter. We regard the documentation of all archaeological finds in our country as a professional duty of archaeological institutions, which is not contradictable by any reasonable arguments. On the contrary, when detectorists themselves or the general public prevent archaeologists from documenting these artefacts and making them accessible for professional study, this process gradually makes archaeology “blind”.
Roman fortifications on the barbarian territory in the Middle Danube Region during Marcomannic wars – introduction and perspectives
Komoróczy, Balázs
Intensive terrain and theoretical archaeological research aimed to the period of the Marcomannic wars continuously brings new information about the subject. Interpretation of the archaeological evidences of the Roman military impact into the Germanic territories (Moravia, Slovakia and Lower Austria) requires a complex approach. The main objective of the paper is to deliver a revised outline of already known Roman military fortification, complemented with up-to-date results of the systematical research in the area occupied by Roman military power on the cadastre of ceased village Mušov. Analyses of the available sources - together with the latest findings from the Germanic settlements dated to the periods around the Marcomannic wars - show extraordinary intensity, exceptional geographical extent and deep social impact of the Roman military power on the Marcomannian and Quadian territories during the period from 172 to 180 AD.
Hradisko (Burgstall) at Mušov in the light of results of excavations in 1994-2007
Komoróczy, Balázs
The essay analyses archaeological structures founded at locality Hradisko at Mušov. Detailed analysis of the fortification and internal buildings and their comparison with parallels from the territory of roman provinces are accompanied with summary of historical and archaeological evidence of the dating of these objects. Testimonies of the objects of the internal buildings at Mušov, but also the fortification and the collection of finds show that the Roman installation occurring here has been the most important in the barbaricum at the time of the Marcomannic wars. It was not conceived as a classical camp for the accommodation of large military units. This praesidium has provided a sufficiently protected space for, inter alia, all the craftsmen activities required, for the storage and distribution of supplies, for the coordination of the troops operating in the broad surroundings and for the accommodation of high-ranking visitors.
