The Impact of Human Agency on Creating Development Potential and Transforming Development Trajectories in the Cheb and Sokolov Regions during the Post-Totalitarian Period
Svoboda, Jan ; Komárek, Marek (advisor) ; Ježek, Jiří (referee)
This thesis focuses on analysing the concept of human agency in peripheral regions with a discontinuous development and contributes to the current debate in economic evolutionary geography. Specifically, the study targets two districts in the Karlovy Vary region - Cheb and Sokolov - with the region being internally differentiated in terms of development potential. The aim of the thesis is to gain a deeper understanding of how human agency has transformed in the post-totalitarian period concerning development trajectories and how this human agency and its changes contribute to the creation of development potential. To achieve this goal, intensive qualitative research was conducted using semi- structured interviews. The data collection involved a wide range of actors from both regions, including representatives of public administration at the local and regional levels, significant entrepreneurs, non- profit development entities, and others. The data obtained for this study was analysed through coding, which enabled the identification of key themes, patterns, and correlations in human agency and their roles in creating development potential and directing development trajectories. The research results revealed that both districts exhibit multiple types of human agency simultaneously and that worse...
Factors of instability of local assembly in Czechia
Šmída, Jakub ; Perlín, Radim (advisor) ; Komárek, Marek (referee)
Bachelor thesis deals with conditions influencing stability of local assembly in Czechia in 2014-2018. In this research dissolution of an assembly and following election announcement is considered as an expression of instability. The thesis follows two main goals. First is to find regularities in terms of area, size and demographic. Second is to find actual reasons of local assembly dissolutions. Analytical section aims to characterize municipalities in which extraordinary elections took place in 2014-2018. Regularities relating to the type of countryside, share of non-believers and natives were defined based on sectional quantitative analyses. The second goal was achieved by searching through news in local internet journals. Main reasons of local assembly dissolution were defined based on the found reports. Predominantly the reasons were personal disagreements, low interest in candidacy and disputes about the direction the municipality is heading. Clusters of municipalities where local assembly dissolution occurred and areas of highest occurrence of local assembly instability were also defined. Keywords: local assembly, municipal elections, extraordinary elections, local administration, municipal stability, regional differences
The role of soft factors in the development of the inner periphery of the Eastern Bohemia
Komárek, Marek
The role of soft factors in the development of the inner periphery of the Eastern Bohemia Abstract In recent years, research on conditionality process of space polarization and regional development puts emphasis on understanding importance of endogenous and "soft" factors. General theories of regional development (formed mainly on the basis of evaluating "hard" data) are verified by frequent case studies because of their limited explanatory power. In these case studies, especially qualitative approaches of evaluation are applied. Influence and validity of "soft" factors significantly increases with decreasing hierarchical level, so it is desirable to conduct empirical research at the municipal level. Diploma thesis aims to analyze "soft" factors of regional development and understand the nature of differences in socio-economic development at the municipal level in the inner periphery of Bohemia. The concept of the institutional thickness has become the theoretical basis. This concept has logical overlap to the concept of the social capital. The objects of research are the spatial co-operation of actors of regional development (mayors), their reciprocal trust and engagement in local activities. Thesis aims to identify and to explain the nature of relations, direction of interactions and impact of political...

The role of local actors in socio-economic development of west Bohemia border
Svoboda, Jan ; Komárek, Marek (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Petr (referee)
The following bachelor thesis aims to spread not only current theoretical, but especially empirical, knowledge about the role of local development actors in a different socio-economic state of municipalities located on the border peripheries of Czechia. The initial concept of assessment of all findings is the so-called "institutional thickness". The primary data analysed in this paper were obtained from 24 semi-structured interviews with mayors of local municipal councils. The main goal of this research is to understand and clarify, based on the analysis of semi- structured interviews, the density of social interactions in local development of municipalities. Since the interviews cover the entire Cheb county area, it was possible not only to evaluate partial social interactions, but also to compare those interactions within the whole area of the county (e.g. between smaller administrative units and others spatial entities). Conclusions of this thesis were also compared with other similar work done on the inner periphery of eastern Czechia between 2016 and 2017. The most important results are a confirmation of the key role of mayors in a local development, the active approach of local governance to participating in microregional unions is also very significant. The internal differentiation of...
Perception of safety and danger in Jičín from the perspective of secondary school students
Žalud, Martin ; Jíchová, Jana (advisor) ; Komárek, Marek (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the perception of safety and danger from the perspective of secondary school students. The goal of the study is to find out how safe students feel in their place of residence, in Jičín and in Czechia. It also focuses on the localization of safely and dangerously perceived places and finding out the reasons for the feeling of danger in these localities. The main method of data collection was a survey among secondary school students in Jičín and an interview with a local police officer and a crime prevention manager in Jičín. Considerable conformity was found between places that respondents do not perceive safely and locations identified by the local police officer as places of frequent police intervention. Reasons for the negative perception of places from the student perspective were shown in the survey. These reasons are mainly related to the social environment. Keywords: feeling of safety, feeling of danger, perception of danger, youth, Jičín

Application of Multilevel Models in Geography: Example of Unemployment
Kadlecová, Adéla ; Netrdová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Komárek, Marek (referee)
Application of Multilevel Modeling in Geography: Example of Unemployement Abstract Multilevel models are an effective methodological tool for analyzing hierarchically structured data. It is a quantitative method based on regression analysis whose use in geography is currently not so widespread. In view of this fact this work is aimed especially at a detailed introduction of the statistical method of multilevel modeling, including both an introduction to all its possibilities and limitations, as well as an example of application of this method in the specific geographic research from the area of unemployment. The purpose of this analysis is to identify particular individual and regional variables related to unemployment and to uncover the effect of these variables on unemployment. Keywords: multilevel modeling, quantitative methods, unemployment, Czechia
