Truth between syntax and semantics
Procházka, Karel ; Peregrin, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Kolman, Vojtěch (referee) ; Awodey, Steve (referee)
The broad aim of this thesis is to clarify the relationship between syntax and semantics, mainly in connection with languages with exactly speci ed structure. The main questions we raise are: What is it that makes a semantic concept genuinely semantic? What exactly makes a merely semantic characterization of such a concept inadequate? What is the decisive step we have to make if we want to start speaking about the meaning-side of language? We approach these questions indirectly: via an analysis of a typically semantic concept, namely that of truth. Our principal question then becomes: What conceptual resources are required for a satisfactory de nition of truth? To investigate the concept of truth and di erent ways in which it can be de ned, we have chosen three individual systems: (a cumulative version of) Russell's rami ed theory of types, Zermelo's second-order set theory and Carnap's logical syntax. Each of the systems is studied in considerable detail. The presented thesis is, in e ect, a collection of three case-studies into the ways in which the concept of truth is explicitly de nable and into the requisite conceptual background, each study forming a more or less closed unity. It should be noted that we are not interested in a historically faithful representation of these systems; our goal is to get...
The logical analysis and the logical form of the statements "A exists"
Dostálová, Ludmila ; Materna, Pavel (advisor) ; Zouhar, Marián (referee) ; Kolman, Vojtěch (referee)
The thesis investigates the logical form of the statements "so-and-so exists". Firstly, the historical survey was displayed in order to identify the meaning of this sort of statements. Hence starting conditions of the logical analysis were defined as well as the requirements that the background logic of the logical analysis must fulfill in order to be an adequate tool to express their logical form. Consequently, various logical forms of existential statements as they are expressed in different logic systems were compared in order to show to what extent they fulfull the demand. The evaluation criteria were: the equivalency of truth-conditions, fulfillment of intuitions, and the acceptability of the deductive results.
The rise and fall of Russell's 1910-1913 theory of judgment and Wittgenstein's philosphical beginnings
Formal aspects of Aristotle's logic from the historical perspective
Fontán, Martin ; Peregrin, Jaroslav (referee) ; Kolman, Vojtěch (advisor)
This thesis focuses on formal properties of Aristotle's syllogistic as seen from the per- spective of both modern logic and Aristotle himself. Its main objective is the proof of the standard completeness theorem that does not employ the indirect deduction as has become a custom in modern reconstructions of Aristotle's deductive system.
Actualism and possible worlds
Tomala, Ondřej ; Kolář, Petr (advisor) ; Svoboda, Vladimír (referee) ; Kolman, Vojtěch (referee)
The study focuses on the development of the philosophical analysis of alethic modalities (possibility and necessity) in terms of possible worlds semantics in the analytical tradition from 20th century onwards. Possible worlds semantics has pro ven to be powerful and useful tool of philosophical analysis. However, in order to benefit from its use we have to philosophically scrutinize its central concept - the possible world. We have to clarify its ontological status, identity conditions and other important features, i.e. we have to create theory of possible worlds. Yet during that project we must not fall back into speculative metaphysics of the past, so much abhorred by contemporary analytic philosophy. The goal ofthis study is the defense of Actualism, one of the major theories of possible worlds, which in accordance with its slogan "Everything that exists is actual" treats possible worlds as abstract entities of certain kind representing the ways world might have been. Implicit aim of the study is the defense of the analytical metaphysics and its method as a distinguished discipline within analytic tradition. ln Chapter One it is shown how important role modality plays in our theoretical discourse and reasoning, several types of modalities are distinguished. Possible worlds are presented as useful tool...
Possibilistic logic and the philosophy of David Hume
Vondráčková, Lucie ; Kolman, Vojtěch (referee) ; Holeček, Tomáš (advisor)
This paper presents an enquiry in to possibilistic logic and Hume's philosophy ofAn Enquiry Concerning Hwnan Understanding. As far as being a tool for reasoning under uncertainty possibilistic logic seems to be an appropriate model for empirie theory of tt·utlL However, as we sec the possibilistic conscquence as customary transition, the possibilistic logic's ability to claim that classical flrst-order closed formula cannot be proved ceases to exist. Moreover, the possibilistic semantics coping with inconsistency becomes from this point of view senseless.
The logic of Charles S. Peirce
Charles...
What is meaningfull proper name?
Volák, Martin ; Kolář, Jan (referee) ; Kolman, Vojtěch (advisor)
The theme of this Thesis can be characterized by one question: "What is the meaningful proper name?" The tradition of analytical philosophy is the departure point for finding the answer. The researched areas for what can be named have become not only things of the physical world but also abstract things, such as numbers. The author of this Thesis has determined the concept of truthfulness in such a way that this concept could become "Archimede' s" point for reaching the answer. The answer as such is accepted at the very beginning of the Thesis. From the perspective of language it is not the only possible answer. This answer is the only possible one, however, when viewed from the perspective of practical and pre-philosophical approach to the world - language relationship. The answer is: The meaningful proper name is any language entity for which there exist such criteria of identity that this entity can be secure1y and deliberate1y identified as a name for one conrete object; this entity must be incorporated within mutual language relationship with other language entities in such a way that it can be again recognized as a name naming the same.
